Chapter 104
She would do anything to dig up the truth.
After a long pause, Elgin said, âI can trust youâ
Letitia blinked, totally gobsmacked. Did she hear that right? Did Elgin say he had trust in her?
âAre you for real?â Letitia asked cautiously, âYou believe I didnât harm her?â
âI donât want to dig into this anymore.â
Whether it was a deliberate tumble or an accident, it was lethal for both pregnant women.
Letitia was even more flabbergasted, âYou wonât blame it on me anymore? Just like that?â
âAs long as you play ball, we can turn the page,â Elgin said, âBottom line, Shelaâs baby is gone, and yours is still here. Sheâs the victim; you owe her an apology to get her forgiveness.â
âMe apologize to Shela?â
âYes.â
âJust because she had a miscarriage? And I didnât?â
âYes.
Letitia laughed, âElgin⦠so thatâs your angleâ It wasnât just about apologizing but keeping it up until Shela forgave her. Why should she need Shelaâs forgiveness?
âYes. Letitia, Iâve already cut you a lot of slack.â
âNo way,â she refused, âI donât owe Shela anything!â
Elginâs expression turned icy in an instant, âLetitia, learn to read the room!â
âIâve always been stubborn, and you know it.â
If she wanted to play it smooth, she wouldnât be in this mess right now.
Some things, itâs not that she wonât do them; she just doesnât want to.
Elgin lifted his knee onto the bed, and with a flick, he tilted her chin up, âLetitia, you killed my child, and Iâm just asking for an apology, nothing more and you still wonât give it?â
What on earth does she want! Heâs been lowering his standards over and over for her!
Letitia replied, âI didnât do anything wrong, so I wonât apologize.â
Elgin was nursing a burgeoning headache. This woman could always get on his nerves so easily!
âLetitia!â His roar almost echoed through the whole of Ivory Towers.
Still, Letitia insisted, âIâm not wrong.â The one at fault was Shela! And now sheâs supposed to apologize? Not happening!
âElgin, what I hate most is being framed, Letitia stared into his intense eyes, âespecially being forced to carry the blame!â
Her dad was framed and jailed. Back then, she was too young to understand, completely clueless and powerless. Maybe if Dad had just held on, not bowed down, fought back, things couldâve turned out a bit better.
Now, the road to uncovering the truth behind Marcel Ramirezâs death⦠itâs so long! And she was so exhausting.
âI told you, Shela miscarried, itâs only right and proper for you to apologize, whatâs the big deal?â Elgin pressed, his voice rising, âWill it kill you?â
âYou canât see the wounds inside!
Elginâs gaze drifted down, landing awkwardly in front of her. Letitia raised her hand to block it.
âAn apology could save you some hardship,â Elgin said, âDonât make me back you into a corner every time before you come around.â
Elgin, you know how many comers youâve backed me intoâ¦â
Latida brushed off his hand and smiled. There will come a day.â
Mer words were cryptic, and Elgin didnât understand it, he frowned.
âDonât get it, huh? Letitiaâs smile brightened, âNo worries, youâll find out when the time comesâ
What are you talking about?â
Bon, there will come a day when you realize youâve had me pegged wrong from the start.â
Letitiaâs voice faded, her words trailing off into silence.
The two of them face to face, less than ten centimeters apart, could hear each otherâs breath,
But their hearts were miles apart.
Evely time they seemed to get closer, something would come up to drive a wedge between them, making the distance even greater in an instant.
âIâve wronged you? Howâso?â Elgin closed in, nose to nose, âLetitia, that was my child! Do you have any idea how much that hurts!?â
He didnât have much feeling for Shela, but the child was his! After Shelas miscarriage, what was Letitia doing? She was by Neilâs side, thinking she did no wrong, even standing up to him!
âDo you think it doesnât hurt me?â Letitia shot back, her voice rising involuntarily, âWhen you kicked the doctor out of the OR, leaving me alone on the operating table waiting for death, did you not think how desperate I was!â
Tears welled up involuntarily, but Letitia blinked them back fiercely.
She didnât want to cry in front of Elgin!
âLetitia, how dare you blame me after what happened!â
Elgin stepped back, straightened up, his chest heaving, his eyes fierce as blades!
Suddenly, Elginâs hand shot up high.
Letitia instinctively flinched, blurting out, âYou gonna hit me?â
Elginâs hand trembled uncontrollably.
He really wanted to slap her! This woman, Letitia, she was infuriating!
âGo ahead, Letitia lifted her chin, âIf you want to hit me, just do it. Anyway, Iâm at your mercy to be sliced and diced!â
âYou think I wonât hit you?â
âSure, mighty President Ramirez, what canât you do!â
Letitia thought, might as well take the slap.
What Elgin had done to her, wasnât each thing more painful than a slap?
Elginâs eyes flickered, and his hand came down swiftly.
She closed her eyes, waiting for the slap. But the pain never came. Letitia was puzzled, about to open her eyes when she heard a âthudâ
near her ear.
Elgin had punched the wall beside her, and blood dripped down.
Letitia looked at him in shock, âElgin, youâ¦â
âI donât hit women, thatâs a line I wonât cross,â his eyes were dark, âLetitia, Iâll make you regret standing up to me today!â
He turned and strode away. His hand hung by his side, dripping blood.
Letitia stared at the bloodstains on the floor, suddenly feeling like her legs turned to jelly, and she plopped down on the bed. Why⦠Elginâs slap never came. She thought for sure he was gonna lay one on her.
Only after she relaxed did Letitia realize her back was drenched in sweat.
She took a shower, crawled into bed with her heart pounding, and tossed and turned, unable to catch a wink of sleep.
This wasnât going to be the end of it
For sure, there was some unknown dread lurking, waiting to pounce on her!
Elgin walked back to the living room, and the butler caught sight of the blood on the back of his hand, nearly jumped out of his skin, âMr. Ramirez, what on earth⦠Quick, call the family doctor!â
