Elgin rolled up her sleeve and gave it a thorough once-over, making sure there weren’t any wounds on

her.

If Letitia had lost and got her face scratched up, and Elgin couldn’t lay a finger on Shela, he’d really

The whole way there, he was worried she wouldn’t be able to hold her own. Thankfully, she didn’t end

up shortchanged.

Letitia paused, not quite catching his drift. She pulled her hand back, dodging his touch, “Next time I

see Shela, I won’t let her off the hook!”

“Leave Shela to me. You stay out of it.”

Letitia snorted, “Elgin, don’t you always claim you love me? Why do you still take her side when it’s

between me and Shela?”

It looked like he was shooing Shela away, but in reality, he was protecting her!

“Are you jealous?” Elgin raised an eyebrow and asked.

Letitia was taken aback. Was she jealous?

Elgin said he liked her, but when it came down to her or Shela, he still treated Shela better.

To be honest. Letitia was genuinely miffed. Why can men talk the talk but not walk the walk?

Love, isn’t it supposed to be exclusive, not just a preference?

“I’m not.” Letitia denied. “You can totally side with Shela all you want, what’s it to me!”

With that, she turned to leave.

Elgin reached out, pulling her into his embrace, “I need to take responsibility for Shela, I owe her that. I

hope you can understand me

Letitia nearly laughed in exasperation, “Why should I understand you? If my mom hadn’t made it

through this surgery, Shela and I would ve been sworn enemies for life! I’ll make her pay!”

She didn’t know what was between Elgin and Shela, and she didn’t care to know.

After hours of agonizing waiting, finally, the lights in the operating room went out.

Letitia rushed forward, “Doctor, how’s my mother?”

“She’s out of immediate danger for now,” the doctor said wearily, “but she needs to be moved to the

ICU and monitored closely.”

“So you’re saying… her life could be at risk at any moment?”

“We’re treating her, there shouldn’t be any complications”

Letitia’s heart was still clenched tight.

The nurse wheeled out Malinda’s bed, and seeing her with an oxygen mask and tubes all over, barely

hanging on, Letitia felt a lump in her throat

What exactly.. did Shela say to drive her mother to this state! She had to find out what was said!

“Let’s go back, Elgin said from behind her, “You haven’t fully recovered yet.”

Letitia stood at the door to the ICU, silent and unmoving.

Elgin just scooped her up and carried her away. She was quiet the whole way, her usual spiky

defenses down, not snapping at anyone, just still and silent.

This actually made Elgin feel uneasy, not sensing her presence, gripping her hand the whole time.

“This is far enough.” The car stopped at the hospital entrance, Letitia got out, “I’ll head back to the room

myself.”

Elgin didn’t speak, just silently followed her.

He knew she was angry, hurting, but he wouldn’t touch Shela.

The hallway was unusually quiet, Letitia found it odd where were all the bodyguards, the nurses? Why

was it so deserted?

Until she pushed the door to the room open, and then she understood why

Hawley was sitting on the sofa, his previous air of triumph gone, looking old and worn out.

Phedra was pouring tea.

“You’re back,” said Hawley, ‘Come in, shut the door, take a seat.”
