Hearing this, Mark suddenly had a brainwave and blurted out, âYes, yes, youâre absolutely right, it was
all my idea! Mr. Ramirez, it was me who had Shela take over, donât blame her, itâs all on me!â
Even now, Mark was deluding himself, thinking he could still save Shela.
But it was no use.
Elgin was as cold as ice, âSo keen to admit your mistakes? Iâll grant you that.â
âMr. Ramirezâ¦â
âGo back to the psych ward, but forget about your title as director.â Elgin curled his lips up cruelly,
âYouâll be staying as a patient.â
Mark bulged his eyes!
After lording over the psych ward for so many years, he had crossed countless patients.
If he were to be thrown in there, heâd be skinned alive, drained of blood, and stripped of flesh to the
bone, and not even the scraps would be left!
Take him away.â Elgin commanded, âAnd break his arms and legs!â
âYes, Mr. Ramirez.â
Mark screamed, trembling all over, his pants dripping wet. He⦠he was so scared that he wet himself!
The bodyguard dragged him out, and Mark rolled his eyes back, passing out cold.
You reap what you sow.
Watching her fatherâs fate, Shela was already terrified, her mouth agape, unable to utter a word.
She stared blankly at Letitia, âHow⦠how did you find out about all thisâ¦â
They had never told anyone! How could Mr. Ramirez and Letitia suddenly know?
It was supposed to be a secret!
Letitia replied, âThatâs none of your business, Shela⦠Evil will eventually destroy itself.â
Her gaze lightly brushed over Shelaâs ring.
Greed was Shelaâs biggest weakness.
This wedding ring, designed to step on her dignity and wounds, was crafted for Shela by Elgin at great
expense.
In the end, the ring came in handy.
Shela crawled to Elginâs feet, clutching at his trouser leg: âMr. Ramirez, no matter what, my feelings for
you are real, I truly love you, Mr. Ramirezâ¦â
âGet lost!â
Elgin kicked her away forcefully.
Shela was sent flying and tried to crawl back, but the bodyguard held her down.
Take her out,â Elgin ordered coldly, âand bring the whip.â
The bodyguard asked, âHow many lashes?â
âStop when she stops screaming. Leave her some breath!â
He wanted to punish them bit by bit!
6
No, Mr. Ramirez, no Shela cried out in panic, âYou canât do this to me!â
*Canât I? Did you forget when you threw Letitia down the stairs?â
Shela looked into Elginâs emotionless eyes and knew there was no turning back.
She thought she had the upper hand, never expecting⦠Letitia to turn the tables on her!
Where did it all go wrong?
Shela couldnât figure it out!
F
The bodyguards were already dragging her away as she struggled violently, âNo, let me go, Mr.
Ramirez, youâre so heartlessâ¦â
In the struggle, the ring on her finger fell off.
Letitia walked over, bent down, and picked it up.
âThe diamond is so beautifulâ¦â she mused, âIt glitters brilliantly, such a pretty thing, worth millions, the
dream. of many women.â
Shela would never guess she lost because of this ring.
And she would never have the chance to know.
Letitia turned and handed the ring to Elgin, âThis is yours.â
He stood still, hands by his side.
âGive it to your future Mrs. Ramirez.â Letitia said, âI still remember how much my motherâs emerald
bracelet was worth at the charity auctionâ¦â
Suddenly, Elgin pulled her into his arms.
His grip was strong, as if trying to fuse her into his body.
âMrs. Ramirez⦠itâs you.â Elgin whispered in her ear, âItâs always been you, never anyone else!â
The one he had been searching for was Letitia, not Shela!
His deep affection, his love, had all been misplaced!
âLetitia, itâs you Iâve been looking for and want to marry⦠I told you that night I would marry you, and I
keep my word⦠Itâs just that I found the wrong person, Shela took your place.â
Elgin was frantic, his voice shaking as he spoke. He felt an urgency, as if he couldnât hold on to Letitia.
He couldnât be without her!
âAfter you ran away, I searched the whole city for you⦠Everything I gave to Shela was meant for you!â
Resting her chin on his shoulder, Letitia gazed into the distance. âElgin,â she said, âYou were wrong
from the
start.
âWrong can be corrected, canât it?â Elgin said, Thereâs still a chance to make things right, isnât there?â
He asked tentatively, holding his breath for her response.
Letitia shook her head gently, âItâs beyond repair.â
Letitia⦠Elgin embraced her more tightly, âDonât give up on me.â
How he feared a future without her!
He didnât want to have just found her, only to lose her completely!
How can I overlook the pain you caused me, so deep and so sharp?â Letitia asked, âCan a broken
mirror be mended? Even glued back together, it will still have cracks.
âElgin, I can forgive what youâve done to me. But what about our child? That was a living being.â
âIf only you had been kinder to me, we wouldnât have come to this point.â
Letitia slowly looked up into his eyes, âI want you to feel guilty and grieve. I want you to remember
forever that you personally sent me into the operating room and took our child away!â
âLetitiaâ¦â
If only the child were still here, how wonderful that would be.
Sadly, there are no ifs in life.
Letitia pressed her finger against his heart, âYou deserve to feel the pain too.â
Her strength was minimal, yet Elgin swayed his body, nearly losing balance.
Letitia handed the ring back to him, âTake it.â
âIt was meant for you, Letitia. Not for Shelaâ¦â
She flashed a small smile, âDoesnât matter anymore.â
Elgin looked at her, âI know you donât want anything Shelaâs worn, itâs cool. I can make another one for
youâ¦â
âNo need.â Letitia cut him off, âItâs pointless.â
He raised his voice in response, âIt does matter!â
Elgin was trying so hard, bending over backwards to fix their shattered relationship.
But Letitia never gave him even the slightest chance.
The ring clattered to the floor, rolling to a stop under the couch.
âLetitia, have you everâ¦â Elgin bobbed his Adamâs apple, âEven the tiniest bit, loved me?â
Hearing his question, her long lashes quivered.
