It had gotten even colder, and Letitia couldnât stop shivering.
âSuch a delicate flower, arenât you? Just a few hours without heating, you seem to be on deathâs door,â
Shela dragged her out of the basement and dumped her on the ground floor, âDid you overhear my
chat with Elgin? Heâs on his way.â
At the mention of that name, Letitia slowly opened her eyes.
âYes, Elgin is coming.â She clenched her teeth, âHe will save me.â
âHe canât save you!â Shela bellowed, âYouâre in my grasp now, and I wonât let you slip away. Iâm taking
you down with me! Understand? Donât get your hopes up.â
But Letitia insisted, âHe will save me.â
The more Shela thought about it, the angrier she got, and she let loose a slap across Letitiaâs face,
âThatâs for being so stubborn! Thatâll teach you!â
After the slap, Shela was still seething and gave Letitia a kick for good measure.
Muttering under her breath, âIf it werenât for humiliating you bit by bit in front of Elgin, I wouldâve dealt
with you. already! Do you think Iâm keeping you alive because Iâm scared to hurt you?â
Letitia looked at her and said, âElginâs so sharp and capable, are you sure to outplay him?â
âI can! Because youâre my last resort in the hole!â
âBut I believe in him more,â Letitia asserted, âBecause he loves me and heâll do anything to save me.â
That comment hit a nerve with Shela.
She grabbed Letitia by the hair, âLove? Elgin loves you!?â
âYes, he loves me,â Letitia responded, âHe told me himself, more than once,â
Shela burst into laughter, âYeah, right. That night, it was you who saved him, not me. Heâs searching for
you, the baby youâre carrying is his⦠too bad, huh? What did you end up with? Absolutely nothing!â
The child was always a sore spot for Letitia.
Shela got more worked up as she went on, âWhen I found out you were pregnant, I panicked. What if
your baby grew up looking like Elgin? That would totally wreck my plans. So, I did everything I could to
get rid of that child.
Who knew youâd be so lucky and tough, that kid just wouldnât budge from your belly! But, what thrilled
me more than the child dying at my hands, was Elgin being the one who ended it! I was over the moon
when I heard the news⦠Now Elgin knows it was his kid, imagine his regret! Too late though, all too
late.â
Letitia just coldly watched the manic Shela.
âIâd advise you to let me go, you might have a fighting chance,â Letitia said, âIâll plead with Elgin to
make sure both your father and you stay alive.â/
She was starting to plot her escape. Before Elgin arrived, she had to find a way to stabilize Shela. An
inside-out strategy would increase her chances of getting out!
She couldnât rely solely on Elgin!
âLive? I donât plan on living, my dadâs life was a joke anyway,â Shela retorted, âDonât bother trying to
convince
me!â
âYouâll have nothing if you die⦠Think about it.â
âWhat do i have now!? Shela demanded, âJust a measly life, Iâd rather drag you down to hell with me!â
Letitia patiently replied, âActually, what you did before doesnât warrant a death sentence. I can assure
you to let Elgin go easy on you, so you still have hope and a way out.â
âShut up, enough!â Shela interrupted harshly, âI donât want to hear it!â
âYou want to live too, right? Nobody wants to die. Shela, as long as youâre alive, thereâs always a
chance. Once youâre dead, thatâs the end of everything.â
âShut up, shut up! Iâm not listening! Iâd rather die than live a second-rate life!â
Shela had tasted the high life Elgin gave her, the riverside mansion, chauffeured luxury cars⦠now
suddenly stripped of everything, she couldnât handle the fall.
It dawned on Letitia that Shela was terrified of being broke!
There was a weakness!
Now sheâs getting somewhere!
âYou want money? Easy, Letitia said, âJust let me go and Elgin will wire you the cash, as much as you
want! Then with the money⦠you can skip the country!â
Shela paused for a moment.
At the sight of her hesitance, Letitia kept pressing, âDying is the absolute worst way out, donât be
rashâ¦. Everything Iâve just said can happen!â
Just then, a bright beam of light suddenly shone in from outside.
Blindingly bright, it made both Shela and Letitia squint.
Letitia raised her hands to shield her eyes.
But Shela, quick as a flash, grabbed Letitiaâs shoulder and ducked behind a wall, pulling out a knife and
pressing it to Letitiaâs throat.
âWhoâs there? Stay back!â Shela yelled, âStop! Donât move! Donât come any closer!â
The beam of light kept shining straight on.
Shela immediately pressed the knife harder against Letitiaâs throat, âTurn off the lights! Or Iâll kill her!â
Then, the piercing light suddenly went out.
Letitiaâs vision went dark for a moment before slowly adjusting to the normal lighting.
Elgin stood there in a black coat, flashlight in hand, with an air of deadly calmness.
His face was a mask of dark intensity, with his gaze fixed on the scene before him.
Elgin had arrived. He was here.
At that moment, seeing him standing there, Letitia felt a surge of security. She knew he would come!
âAh, Mr. Ramirez, you sure are prompt, Shela started to laugh, âI have been waiting for you and you
finally showed up.â
Elgin stood there in silence, with no one behind him.
âYes, Iâm here,â Elgin replied, his voice deep, âShela, whatever you want, just say it.â
Seeing the knife at Letitiaâs throat, he lurched his heart.
Shela was not known for her restraint, and spot she pressed was right over a major artery. A single
sliceâ¦. Blood would spurt, and not even a miracle could save her then!
I have no demands, Shela answered, âI just want you to watch how Letitia dies!!â
With that, she drew the knife lightly across Letitiaâs neck, leaving a bloody line.
The wound was somewhat deep, blood dripping steadily, quickly staining Letitiaâs clothes red.
Elgin instinctively wanted to step forward, but just as he was about to move, he heard Shela bark,
âFreeze! Donât come any closer!â
He stopped in his tracks, snapping back his footsteps as if on a leash.
Shela was backed up against the wall, using it as a shield, with Letitia tucked safely in front of her.
âElgin, youâve definitely set a trap around here, havenât you?â Shela said, âYou might look like youâre
flying solo, but youâve got your ducks in a row. Iâm not falling for it!â
Elgin responded, âAs you can see, itâs just me right now.â
