He leaned in close, listened intently, and confirmed that Elgin was murmuring âLetty.â
âWhoâs Letty?â Hawley asked, âCould it be⦠Letitia?!â
The butler nodded, âYes. The only word Mr. Ramirez has uttered during his unconscious state has
been âLetty.ââ
So no one was better suited than Letitia.
After a moment of contemplation, Hawley let out a sigh, âAlright, get Letitia over here!â
Upon hearing it, the butler was over the moon.
âBut the second Elgin wakes up, sheâs outta here,â Hawley added, âThatâs the deal!â
Phedra wasnât thrilled and shot the butler a nasty glare.
At the Ivory Towers, Letitia stood by the window, looking out at the sky.
Three days had passed already. Why hadnât Elgin woken upâ¦.
His arm was injured and he had blood transfusions in time. He should have been up by now.
Too bad she couldnât be by his side, all she could do was fret.
Suddenly, a car pulled in, and the bodyguard hurried over, âMaâam.â
Letitia turned to him, âWhatâs up? Is Elgin awake?â
âYou are agreed to be with Mr. Ramirez at the hospital.â
âReally?!â Letitiaâs eyes lit up, âGreat, Iâll head over right now!â
She was so thrilled that she didnât know what to say. Then, she made a beeline for the door, not
wanting to
waste a second!
Rushing to the hospital room, Letitia found only the butler there.
âMaâam, youâve arrived.â
âYep!â She nodded, âHowâs Elgin?â
âHis vitals are improving, but heâs still out cold.â
Letitia sat by the bed, her palm gently resting on the back of his hand.
She dared not move too much for fear of touching his wounds.
âLettyâ¦â Elgin murmured again in his sleep.
âIâm here, Iâm right here,â Letitia responded immediately, âCan you wake up already?â
Watching this, the butler discreetly left, giving the two some space.
Truth be told, Letitia was Mr. Ramirezâs best medicine.
Elgin fluttered his eyelids, âLetty, Letty.â
He kept calling her name, and she kept answering.
Letitia, with gentle care, used a warm towel to gently wipe Elgin down, moistening his lips with a cotton
swab dipped in warm water now and then.
When she had a moment, sheâd chat with him.
âLook, itâs so sunny today. If you woke up, I could take you out for some sunshine.
I
âyour hand will be fine, Iâm sure itâll heal. And if⦠if it doesnât work anymore, itâs okay, Iâll be your left
hand
âElgin, youâre too proud, arenât you? Canât accept an imperfect version of yourself?â
âI just remembered, when I jumped into the lake, you stayed by my bedside, babbling away, hoping Iâd
open my eyes.â
Sometimes Letitia had no idea what she was babbling about.
As night descended, she snatched a hasty meal. Just as she was preparing to wash herself, Elginâs
voice echoed out, calling for her. âLetty, Lettyâ¦â
âIâm here.â
This time, after she answered, Elginâs fingers twitched slightly.
Letitia saw it clear as day.
She hurried over, âElgin, Elgin, Iâm here, look at me, Iâm safe and sound, donât you want to see for
yourself? Wake up, please, everyoneâs waiting for you, me especially.â
Under Letitiaâs eager gaze, Elgin slowly opened his eyes.
He was awake!
Letitia was so moved that she was lost for words.
All she could do was to reach out and slam the call bell, signaling the doctors to come quickly.
Elginâs gaze was unfocused, staring at the pristine ceiling.
Soon, the room was filled with the hustle and bustle of footsteps as doctors, nurses, and the Ramirez
family swarmed in.
âQuick, Mr. Ramirez is awake.â
âCheck the monitors, his heartbeat.â
âElgin, youâre finally awake, you had us worried sick!â
A cacophony of voices filled the room, it was noisy and chaotic.
But the voice Elgin had been longing to hear⦠was conspicuously absent.
Where was the person who kept saying âIâm hereâ?
âIâm here.â
âIâm here.â
Where had the person who should have been there gone?
Elgin turned his head slightly, scanning the crowd around his bed.
Her grandpa, Phedra, the butler, doctors, nurses⦠but no sign of Letitia.
Where was she?
Elginâs eyes swept over them, a profound disappointment setting in.
Was it all a dream? A hallucination? Had Letitia never been there at all?
Elgin slowly closed his eyes again, furrowing his brow deeply, âLettyâ¦â
At that moment, Letitia was pushed to the outside.
Surrounded by the crowd, she couldnât see Elginâs condition or hear his faint voice.
He was awake
So, she wasnât needed here anymore.
Hawley would lock her back up in Ivory Towersâ¦
Letitia watched their backs with a serise of loss. How she wished to be the first person Elgin saw when
he opened his eyes.
Because she was the one he had fought so hard to save, and seeing her would have given him peace
of mind.
But with so many people, she couldnât squeeze in.
Letitia stood silently, unobtrusively on the sidelines.
Finally, the head doctor breathed a sigh of relief, âMr. Ramirez is out of danger for good. However, the
injury to his arm is severe. Itâll need at least six months of care.â
Hawley asked, âWill it affect his future life?â
âIf he recovers well, it shouldnât. For the next two years, he mustnât lift heavy things or engage in any
strenuous activities.â
Thatâs good to hear.â
Then, Elginâs voice broke the silence, âWhereâs Letitia?â
His voice was hoarse and raw as if his vocal cords had been torn, but he managed to articulate those
words.
Where was Letitia? He needed to see her.
Hawley paused for a while before answering, âElgin, youâve just woken up, lie still for now, your handâ¦â
Elgin cut him off, repeating, âWhereâs Letitia?â
His gaze sharpened, sweeping towards the butler standing by.
Letitia couldnât possibly not be at the hospital. Unless⦠she had no heart.
Elginâs memory is stuck right at the kidnapping scene. He has no clue how long he knocked out, or
whatâs up with Letitia right now.
She was safe back then, but the gash on her cheek was like a thorn in his side, eating him up step by
step!
âThe missus is out there, Mr. Ramirez,â the butler turned back and pointed outside, âThe crowd was so
thick just now, they pushed her right outside.â
Elgin glanced up.
Bam! His eyes locked with Letitiaâs.
The time seemed to be frozen then.
They just eyeballed each other without a single word.
But in each otherâs peepers, they saw the reflection of their souls.
Some loves neednât be shouted from the rooftops. A look could say it all.
â¦Come here.â Elgin finally broke the silence, cutting to the chase.
