He knew that if he backed down in front of his grandpa again, his marriage to Letitia would only face
fiercer opposition from the Ramirez farnily!
So he couldnât give an inch but come out on top!
Staring out into the night from his window, Elgin thought that a happy marriage should come with the
familyâs blessing perhaps.
Hmm⦠He was determined to fight for Letitia. That day would come.
The next day, at eight oâclock.
Elgin anticipated it correctly â the faint rhythm of familiar footsteps outside the ward announced Letitiaâs
arrival. Recognizing her distinct gait, he had no doubt it was her.
But Letitia stood at the door of the ward, hesitating for a long time before she pushed it open.
She had been woken up early in the morning and driven here, with no one bothering to tell her what
was going
1.
She had no clue what had happened.
But Letitia could guess that there must have been some sort of showdown between Hawley and Elgin.
While one was attempting to keep her distanced from Elgin, the other was longing for her presence.
âCome in, what are you dawdling for?â Elgin asked. âDo you need me to come get you?â
Startled, Letitia hurried inside.
He shouldnât be moving around!
Elgin watched her every move, with his gaze following her wherever she went.
âWhatâs the big rush getting me here first thing in the morning?â Letitia asked with a cool expression,
âThere are doctors and nurses here, they donât need me.â
She had to be a bit colder, a bit more ruthless, so she wouldnât be swayed by Elginâs tender approach.
ââ¦I wanted to see you:
âOh.â Letitia stood far from the bed, her eyes darting around everywhere but at him.
At the sight of her nonchalance, Elgin squinted his eyes, âWhat did grandpa say to you?â
âNothing.â
âDonât lie to me.â
âThereâs nothing to tell,â Letitia responded, âIâve been at Ivory Towers the whole time.â
Elgin said, âIâll get you back to the company and return your freedom. But right nowâ¦â
Right now, he just wanted her by his side.
But he didnât say that.
Letitia was on high alert around him, and he could feel it.
Elgin wondered just how cold was Letitia. Could his near-death experience not move her at all?
The silence filled the room when Elgin stopped speaking.
It was so quiet you could hear the wind outside.
#t was Ranenâs arrival that broke the silence, âMr. Ramirez, hereâs your breakfast for today⦠and
Madam, youâre here too

âYeah, Ranen.â
*Great, then letâs have breakfast together,â Ranen said. âMadam, Iâll leave Mr. Ramirez in your care!â
Ranen sure knew when to make himself scarce, dropping everything and skedaddling.
Letitia set up the breakfast and handed him the chopsticks.
Elgin didnât take them.
She reached out again.
ââ¦You still hate me,â Elgin said. âDonât you?â
âYes.â
âWhat would it take for you to stop hating me?â
Letitia answered, âUnless that child⦠comes back to life.â
That was impossible. The dead couldnât come back to life.
Letitia was cutting off any chance for them to mend their relationship.
âWe could have anotherâ¦â
Elgin didnât finish his sentence before Letitia interrupted him, âSure, we could try again and have
another child, but that child will never come back!â
Her emotions ran high, with her voice rising unintentionally.
âAlso, Elgin, why on earth should I have a child for you?â
âHave you ever cherished me? Do you even know what love is? I still remember all the hurt and insults
you threw at me!â
âMy mother hasnât woken up yet, the doctor said the special medicine was given a month too late. If it
had been sooner, she wouldnât be like this now, possibly never waking up!â
âDo you remember that emerald bracelet? I couldnât fix it, so I made it into a jade pendant and put it
back around my momâs neck. But you could have given the bracelet back to me! Instead, you had to
smash it with your own hands!â
There were just too many hurts to list.
Letitia spoke her mind, with her eyes reddening unconsciously.
Elgin raised his hand to wipe the tears but she dodged away.
âI think Hawley was right, weâre like oil and water. Itâs either you or me who wonât survive. Weâre just not
meant to be.â
With that, Letitia turned and left.
âLetitia! Come back!â
But she was resolute, not looking back.
Outside, Ranen was taken aback, âMadam, youâ¦â
Iâm leaving. Letitia kept her head down, walking briskly away.
Madam, the truth is Mr. Ramirez has always cared for you. Hawley came last night, they had a huge
fight. For your sake, Mr. Ramirez didnât back down one bit and got the upper hand.â
âI donât want to hear it.â Letitia walked straight out.
Once she left the elevator, she was suddenly flanked by two bodyguards.
âMy lady.â
Iâm going back to Ivory Towers now.â
Hawleyâs people were like a bad penny, always tuming up.
Letitia got in the car and sat there in a daze.
When she finally snapped out of it, she realized they were not heading to Ivory Towers at all!
âWhere are you taking me?â Letitia asked immediately.
âMadam, Senior Mr. Ramirez will let you meet Shela,â the bodyguard replied. âDonât worry, we wonât
hurt you.â
Meet Shela? She never asked for this! Why was Hawley suddenly arranging for her to see Shela?
But⦠whatever, she had a bone to pick with Shela anyway.
Letitia relaxed.
The car took a series of turns and left the city center, with fewer cars and pedestrians.
Finally, it stopped in front of a holiday villa.
Letitia was puzzled. How could Shela be living in such a nice place?
âMadam, please come in,â the bodyguard said politely.
Letitia walked in with some doubts.
The living room was empty but clean and luxurious. Suddenly, footsteps sounded behind her.
As she turned around, she saw Hawley.
âLetitia, do you remember our private agreement?â
âI remember,â she nodded, âI will leave Elgin and never stay by his side forever.â
âThatâs good to hear.â
Letitia chimed in again, âBut weâve gotta think long-term here to hatch a foolproof plan. You know
Elginâs no pushover. If I donât make a clean break now, itâs gonna be even tougher to get away from
him later.â
Hawley replied with dead seriousness, âI canât wait that long!â
It was crystal clear that Elgin was head over heels for Letitia.
The more they dragged this out, the more hooked Elgin would get on Letitia!
So, Hawley had to make a move now!
âWhat?â Letitia caught on instantly, âYou mean, you want me to take off right now?â
Yeah.â
âAnd what about my mom?â
They had a deal that she was supposed to bring her mom along!
But now with Malinda out cold, needing doctors and nurses around the clock, there was no way she
could just up and leave AquaCity on the fly!
âIâll sort it out. You go first,â Hawley said, âGet out of AquaCity and head overseas. The farther, the
better!â
