Chapter 41
At the hospital, after getting her blood drawn, Letitia used the excuse of heading to the restroom to sneak off to the OB-GYN department. She got the doc to prescribe her a bunch of meds to prevent a miscarriage and crammed them
into her bag.
She was busting her butt, trying to stay alive, for herself and for her baby.
Just as Letitia left the OB-GYN, she bumped into Shela in the elevator,
âDone with the bloodwork?â Shela asked with a smirk, âYouâre still standing tall, I see⦠Guess it means more of the
same tomorrow, huh?â
âIn your dreams.â After seeing her mom, it was time to fight back. She couldnât let Shela and her dad keep bleeding her dry, or the baby wouldnât stand a chance!
Shela was brimming with confidence, âWeâll just see about that tomorrow.â
Letitia chuckled, âSure, weâll see.â
Stepping out of the elevator, her driver and bodyguard followed suit. They looked intimidating.
âWhere do you think youâre off to? Shela asked, âAnd who are these guys tailing you?â
Iâm Mrs. Ramirez Iâm not some random chick like you.â
âLetitia!!â Shela shouted, fuming.
Letitia had already left.
Actually, these two were sent by Elgin to keep tabs on her, to monitor her bloodwork and her meeting with Malinda.
Shela watched Letitiaâs retreating figure, âHeh, letâs see who will win in the end!â
She stealthily followed behind, sneaking around.
Letitia didnât even know where her mother was. She watched the increasingly unfamiliar scenery pass by the car window, until they arrived at a posh private hospital in the suburbs. Thatâs when the driver finally said, âMaâam, weâre
here.â
This was the ritzy hospital in AquaCity.
Elgin had actually transferred her mother to such a swanky place and was footing the bill for her treatment? Letitia found it hard to believe. Was he really being kind-hearted? But the evidence was right in front of her.
Guided by a staff member, Letitia arrived at the door of the hospital room.
âThe patient has just regained consciousness, and her vital functions are still recovering. You can only see her for half
an hour.â
âOkayâ
Letitia had barely pushed the door open when Shela emerged from the shadows.
The bodyguard blocked her way. âNo entry for unrelated individuals.â
âAre you blind or something that you donât recognize me?â Shela waved her hand dismissively, âMove aside, I want to see what kind of shady business Letitia is up to.â
The bodyguard inquired, âYou areâ¦?â
âShela! The future Mrs. Ramirez!â
That name was too well-known in Ivory Towers for the bodyguard to mess with, so he silently stepped aside.
Shela tiptoed over and pressed her ear against the door, eavesdropping on the sounds inside.
in the ward, Letitia hurried over and grasped Malindaâs hand tightly, âMomâ¦â
pened her eyes and stared at her for a few seconds. âIs that you, Letitia?â
itâs me, mom, youâre finally awake.â
Malinda burst into tears, âLetitia, my poor girl⦠After such a disaster, what are you going to do? Has anyone been bullying you, they must have mistreated youâ¦â
After the incident, Malinda had become a vegetable, only waking up today.
She didnât know exactly what had happened, but she could surmise it must have been a trying ordeal..
âNo, Mom, Iâm fine, Iâm doing pretty well.â Letitia smiled, âDonât worry.â
âDonât lie to me, youâve lost weight, you look haggard..â
Letitia replied, âReally, if things werenât good, where would I get the money for such a nice hospital for you? How could you have woken up, right?â
Malinda stroked her hair, The Ramirez family hasnât been troubling you? How did you manage to finish your studies?â
âIâve got⦠Iâve also got Walden.â Letitia said, âHeâs my boyfriend, heâs been great to me. The cost of your hospital stay, heâs been covering it. Heâs been taking care of me all these years.â
Malinda let out a sigh of relief, âGood, thatâs good. I knew it, Waldenâs a decent boy, heâs bound to treat you well.â
âMhmm.
âWho wouldâve thought, two years have gone by, I sure slept for a long time. Letitia, whereâs your dad? Is he okay?â
âDadâs in prison serving time. Donât worry, Iâll visit him often.â
Malinda nodded, âOnce Iâm able to get out of bed and move around, even if itâs in a wheelchair, I want to see him.â
Letitia didnât respond. Chances were⦠Elgin wouldnât let her mother leave this hospital.
She smiled and changed the subject, âMom, Dad will be so happy to know youâre awake. Just focus on getting better,
leave the rest to me.â
Malinda looked at her lovingly. Youâve been our little princess since you were a child. To face such a sudden calamity, itâs hard on you. Even if you donât say it, even with Waldenâs help, I know itâs not been easy.â
Only a motherâs heart truly aches for her child.
Feeling a lump in her throat, Letitia sniffed and held back the tears, âItâs all in the past, Mom. Donât think about it.â
âItâs my fault, dragging you down. If I hadnât ended up in a vegetative state, I couldâve been there for you these past two years⦠Malinda cleaned her tears, continuing, âYour father has done so much good in his life, patients heâs cured
come to our house every year with gifts. I never knew it would come to this.â
âMom,â Letitia asked, âdo you really think Marcelâs death was caused by Dad?â
At the mention of this, Malindaâs emotions surged, âNo! It couldnât be! Heâs so experienced, heâs never made a mistake! Letitia, your father is innocent, heâs been wrongedâ¦â
Letitia gripped her motherâs hand tightly, claiming, âI feel the same way. Dadâs innocent.â
Outside, Shela smirked slyly after hearing this, then she turned and left
Having seen her mother, Letitia felt downcast, yet there was a hint of solace in her heart.
She still had her mom, could see her, talk to her
Back at the Ramirez Group, Letitia made her way to the CEOâs office of her own accord.
âNo matter what, thank you for hiring specialists to treat my mother, getting her to wake up.â Letitia stood in front of the desk, âI⦠I misunderstood you before.â
he hadnât expected him to send her mother to such a fancy private hospital.
Eigins gaze shifted from the computer to her face. âThank you?â
âYeah, otherwise⦠I wouldnât be able to get her such good treatments by myself.â
âNo need.â Elgin flashed a slight grin. âTorturinig a vegetable ainât my idea of fun. Getting her back on her feet, letting her wake up to the agony of losing everything, now thatâs more like it.â
Letitia felt a chill run down her spine, spreading an icy dread to every corner of her body.
âElgin, if youâve got problem with me, bring it on, but leave my mom out of it!â
He raised an eyebrow. âYouâre scared?â
âDo whatever you want to me.â Letitia clenched her fists tight. âJust donât lay a finger on her, pleaseâ¦â
She had overestimated Elgin. Deep down, he was a bona fide devil through and through!
Then be a good girl.â Elgin leaned back in his chair. âIf you tick me off, your momâs gonna have a hell of a time.â
