Chapter 5
Realizing sheâd put her foot in it, Phedra quickly clapped a hand over her mouth âNever mind. Now that youâve married into the Ramirez family, you must play by the rules. Look at yourself. What a mess!â
Letitia raised her hand to cover up. âIâll go change right nowâ
âWhat an embarrassment. I canât figure out what Elgin sees in you. Any darling daughter from AquaCity would be a step. up from youâ¦â
Phedra said with disdain when suddenly a grey suit jacket was draped over Letitiaâs shoulders.
A wave of warmth enveloped her, carrying a familiar scent.
âNo matter what, sheâs not embarrassing you,â Elgin pulled her into his arms. âPhedra, youâre sticking your nose too far
into this
Letitia instinctively tried to pull away, worried about getting him wet or dirty.
But Elgin held on firmly, making her more anxious. What was wrong with him?
She was the one who got drenched, not him. Was he out of his mind?
Seeing him, Phedra quickly put on a smile. âElgin, I was just setting some boundaries for my daughter-in-law.â
âMy rules are the only rules. Letitia doesnât need to follow yours!â
Phedraâs smile froze on her face, and Letitia was even more stiff.
Did she hear that right? Was Elgin sticking up for her?
And Elgin, holding her tenderly, headed towards the villa. Butler, show the guest out.â
âYes, Mr. Ramirez
Letitia was uncomfortable, not daring to move. âWas that your mother?â
âJust a stepmotherâ
âOh⦠Letitia replied, âYou spoke up for me just now, and she must feel offended.â
Elgin answered indifferently. So what?â He could not care less
âSheâs got no right to bully you.â Elginâs lips barely moved. âIn all the world, Iâm the only one who gets to bully you.â
Letitiaâs heart skipped a beat. Even the right to insult her was his alone but no one elseâs.
âDid you apologize to Phedra just now? is that so?
Letitia looked down. Yep
âSlap yourself.â
She met his gaze, puzzled about what she had said wrong. Was it because she had apologized to Phedra?
Elgin didnât bother to explain but just arched an eyebrow indifferently. His word was law.
With a âsmack,â Letitia bit her lip and slapped herself hard.
It had to be loud and forceful, and her cheek needed to show a red mark to satisfy Elgin.
Otherwise, there would be a second slap, a third⦠until he was pleased.
âNot bad. Youâre getting the hang of it, Elgin pointed to the thermos on the coffee table. âGo on. Open itâ
Letitia did as told.
The aroma wafted out when she lifted the lid, tantalizing her appetite.
âThis is.
Soup from Phedra.â
1 stala jemembered her mother also made her soup, but she could never taste her motherâs cooking again.
The chances of waking from a vegetative state were slim to none
Suddenly, 12tiba wanted to cry but dared not, blinking rapidly to push back the tears
Elgin, lounging with legs crossed chin up âLetitia, eat the soupâ
Huh? He wanted her to eat it?
âIt doesnât seemy night Letitia said. Phedra brought this for you
âJust eat it Figuns tone grew impatient Trom now on youâll eat all the soups she brings meâ
He even picked up the spoon, scooped up some soup and brought it to her lips.
I can do it myself
Open your mouthâ
Letitia had no choice but to open her mouth
A gint of something unreadable flickered in Elginâs eyes.
If a man ate this soup, his fertility would get weakened making it hard to get a woman pregnant. He might just let Letitia have it. She was a woman and the soup wouldnât affect her
And even if it did so what? He couldnât care less about her life or death
Unaware. Letitia was glad because she was hungry
âSign This Elgin tossed her an agreement while she was having the soup
She looked closely It was a divorce agreement
They had just got mamed but he already wanted a divorce What was Elgin plotting?
âWeâll get a divorce in three months, and youâll leave with nothing. Elgin rested his forehead on his hand. During these three months, behave as Mrs Ramirez shouldâ
Elam believed he could find the woman he had slept with that night in three months.
By then, Lebiliaâs presence would be meaningless, because he would marry that woman.
That night, all her beauty had him unconsciously yearning
âFine, as you wish, Letitia agreed. âBut I have a conditionâ
Elgin scoffed, âWhat makes you think you have the right to bargain with me? You want me to let your mother go
âNoâ
She wanted to reinvestigate Marcelâs death. It was Elgins untouchable sore spot and anyone who dared to uncover it was asking for trouble!
Of course, Letitia knew his temper, but she had no choice
She cautiously began âHave you ever considered, maybe your fatherâs death wasnât what it seemed?â
As expected, Elginâs face darkened quickly like storm clouds gathering
He kicked over the coffee table, soup spilling everywhere Letitia, how dare you bring this up To my face? Do you want
to die?
Was Letitia scared? Absolutely. Still, Letitia pressed on, âMy dad was an experienced ER doctor, and he couldnât have been so careless as to use the wrong medication. Ah
Before she could finish, Elginâs hand was at her throat. âSay it one more time I dare you!â
Aur from her lungs grew thin. Letitia was gasping and looking up at his handsome face.
Veins en Elgiris ferhead bulged, his grip tightening
Chapter 5
âYour father is unforgivable, Letitia, and you dare try to clear your fatherâs name? Nice try! Iâll make sure the Sanders family lives a life worse than death!â
âI just believe in my dadâ¦â
âShut up!â Elgin snapped viciously, âThe evidence is solid. Your father has confessed and gone to prison. What more is there to say?â
âHe was made to confess cough cough coughâ¦â Letitiaâs vision started to blur, suffocation imminent.
She thought it might be good to die like this. Instead, it would be a release. Life was too exhausting
But Elgin let her go.
âYouâre not getting off that easy,â he was like a demon. âIâm keeping you around to torment day after day.â
Letitia plopped down on the ground, tears slipping down her face without realizing it.
It seemed digging into the truth behind Marcelâs death was a solo mission.
Letitia didnât have time to grieve. She wiped away her tears, picked herself up, and followed Elgin to the master
bedroom with her head down.
âIâm cool with crashing on the floor,â she said, knowing her place.
Elgin ignored her, puffing on a cigarette by the window.
Letitia made her bed on the floor and curled up, closing her eyes.
She didnât see it as roughing it. Sleeping there was a hundred times better than any ward in the mental hospital.
Elgin finished with his smoke and turned around to find Letitia sleeping like a baby.
The moonlight kissed her cheeks, making her fair skin glow, her long lashes casting shadows, and her lips looking red and juicy
It was almost too tempting to kiss her. Elgin quickly looked away and headed to the bathroom for a long and cold shower to cool off.
He couldnât believe he was catching feelings for Letitia! Damn it!
Elgin dropped the shower head with a bang and strode back into the bedroom to scoop Letitia up from the floor in one
swift move!
