Chapter 64
Letitia was utterly stunned as she watched the doctorâs lips moving.
Elgin actually hadnât gone through with it he didnât taken her baby away! Instead, he had instructed the doctor to save the baby. Why, though? This was so not his style!
Had Elgin suddenly grown a heart?
âRelax, both you and the fetus are stable,â the doc said. âRest up for a couple of days and youâll be good to leave.â
She nodded dumbly, her hand caressing her belly. Her baby was still there.
Letitia broke into a grin, her eyes curving into crescents. She hadnât lost her baby! But why, when she had tearfully accused Elgin of killing her child, why hadnât he spilled the beans?
And, she had even bitten him. Yet, he kept mum.
Elginâs thought process was truly bizarre and puzzling. Letitia couldnât for the life of her figure out what he was thinking.
He had the chance to get rid of the baby but chose not to, and he didnât even want to tell her himself. Could it be her death wish had really freaked him out?
âLetitia? Letitia?â Vidonia waved her hand in front of Letitiaâs face repeatedly, âWhatâs got you so spaced out?â
She blinked, âOh⦠itâs nothing.â
âAs a mom-to-be, you gotta be careful. You nearly scared me to death,â Vidonia said as she pulled up a chair to sit. âIâve got a new role now, godmother to your kid, so I better step up.â
Letitia couldnât stop grinning at her.
Vidonia was confused by her laughter, âHey, you look so weird, whatâs wrong?â
Letitia hugged her tightly, âItâs just⦠Iâm over the moon. Getting back what you lost feels so amazing.â
âWhat did you lose?â
âLetâs eat first!â Letitia said, âIâm starving, and so is the baby!â
âIâm hungry too! Vidonia replied, âAs soon as I heard you were hospitalized, I rushed over.â
âLetâs dig in together! Thereâs way too much for me to finish anyway.â
Vidonia grabbed a fork, âAlright, letâs see what your personal chefâs made for you.â
Laughter and lively chatter filled the hospital room. The previous gloom and doom vanished into thin air!
Two days later, the doctor said Letitia could be discharged.
Packing her things, her back to the door, she heard the familiar, steady footsteps approaching.
It was Elgin.
She knew the sound of his footsteps all too well.
After she bit him that day, she hadnât seen him since. She thought he wouldnât show up⦠but there he was, as she was about to be discharged.
Letitia continued packing without looking up
Elgin stood in the doorway, his gaze quietly fixed on her silhouette, until Letitia turned around.
Their eyes met, and Letitia glanced at his shoulder, noting nothing unusual.
She figured it wasnât too serious⦠it was just a bite. After all, his muscles were so tough she even complained her teeth hurt.
âLetâs go home.â Elgin said coolly, ever the ice king.
Okay. She picked up her bag and walked up to him.
He turned and led the way. It seemed like they were giving each other the silent treatment, neither willing to utter an extra word.
Put Letitia would have to cave in eventually. She was no match for Elgin.
Howâs your shoulder?â she asked
Tm not dead.
Letha posted. You couldâve told me, you know..That you didnât get rid of my baby.â
would have bitten him.
Elgin didnât even tum around, âThe docs said you were in critical condition, that an abortion couldâve killed you. I had to keep the kid to ensure youâd stay alive. to keep tormenting you.â
So that was the real deal, Letitia finally understood.
*I thought you suddenly grew a conscience, but turns out, you just wanted to keep me around as your punching bagâ
âGood that you get it.â
Letitia followed him out of the hospital. After a momentâs thought, she said. âIâd like to visit my mother. Sheâll be upset if she doesnât see
me for so longâ
âNo.â
âYou wonât let her take her meds, and now you want to deny me the right to see her?â
Elgin finally stopped, turned, and looked at her, âIn my world, you have no rights, only obedience!*
Letitia chuckled lightly, âWhat, you want me to jump in the lake again?â
âDonât you dare!â
âLet me see my mother.â She insisted. âThatâs my only request.â
Elginâs face darkened further before he finally said, âHalf an hour, no more.â
âDeal!â No matter how short, she had managed to fight for a chance to see her mother.
In her mind, Letitia planned to visit her dad in prison next, to share the good news that her mom had woken up.
She still had ten grand on her. She could give half to her dad and save the rest for emergency.
Once she got her paycheck next month, she could pay back Elginâs twenty grand
She didnât want to owe him a thing.
As for her momâs medsâ¦
Letitia thought, sheâd find a way, sheâd do whatever it takes to get her mom the lifesaving drugs.
While she was deep in thought, she heard Shelaâs syrupy voice, âMr. Ramirez!â
Great, here she is Letitia didnât want to see her. She kept her head down to avoid attention.
Shela threw a glance her way, ostentatiously clinging to Elginâs arm, âI heard you hurt your shoulder, how is it? Does it hurt? And you caught a cold too, oh dear, why donât you take better care of yourself?â
âItâs nothing.â
Letitia was surprised. She had caused the bite on his shoulder, but Elgin had a cold too?
What was that about?
âI made some soup for you,â Shela said with feigned concern, âYouâve been ignoring me these days, Iâve missed you so much.â
Elgin frowned and pulled his arm back.
âSamson has lined up plenty of opportunities for you. If you want to act, then act,â he said with a cold look, âOtherwise, all the resources in the world wonât save you.
Letitia couldnât help but chime in. Seems like Shela doesnât have the luck to become top.â
âHmph, Letitia, whatever you say, Iâm still better off than you!â
âThatâs debatable. If I had your resources, Iâd have become an A-list actress by now.â
Letitia, after all, was a beauty in any crowd.
Fair-skinned, curvy in all the right places, with long hair and delicate features, she was a true goddess. Even with minimal makeup, she was dazzling.
Shela, on the other hand, was all thick makeup, her face looked stiff from all the Botox.
âLetitia, get real, will ya? You canât even spit your lines out smoothly.â Shela snorted. âAs if Mr. Ramirez would help you!â
Letitia just shrugged it off, not in the mood to pick a fight.
A pregnant ladyâs gotta keep her emotions in check, after all.
And for someone like Shela? Not worth it.
âEnough Elgin cut in oily Tve been swamped lately, give me a break from the hassle.â
Ramirez, are you annoyed by me?*
