Chapter 78
*Mrs. Ramirez was getting more difficult by the day,â Ranen pondered.
Letitia was sure as hell Elgin wouldnât come to her.
How could such a big shot as the CEO of the Ramirez Group come to see a little-known designer like her in person? Unless he was seeking to create niore scandalous headlines about himself!
Ranen had no choice but to bail, wondering how he could break the news to Mr. Ramirez in the gentlest way possible.
Right after Ranen left, Letitia got up, heading to the companyâs entrance to pick up her delivery.
Sheâd just grabbed her package when she turned around to see Phedra getting out of an SUV, dressed to the nines like some fancy lady.
Letitia shielded her face with the parcel, not wanting to bump into Phedra.
âStop hiding. Iâm here specifically for you,â Phedra called out to her. âLetitia, you must be some big deal. You have me coming to see you in person.â
Letitia stopped dead in her tracks, wondering what Phedra was up to.
âSomething the matter?â she asked, her tone ice cold.
Phedra approached her saying. Iâm your mother-in-law, after all. I only want to check on you. Wouldnât want people saying I ignored your pregnancy.â
Letitiaâs guard went up instantly. She couldnât take anything about the child lightly.
She shielded her belly. âI can take care of myself. Thanks. No need for your concern.â
âCome on. Iâm the babyâs grandma, Phedra said with a smile. âIâve booked you a comprehensive prenatal examination at the hospital. Letâs go right now.
Saying so, she reached out to grab Letitia.
Letitia dodged. Thanks, but no. Iâm busyâ
She had no idea what Phedra was planning. In no way would she fall for Phedraâs trap. Once at the hospital, with everything set up by Phedra, sheâd be helpless, shouting for help to no avail. Thatâd be a real danger!
âHey, Letitia, donât bite the hand that feeds you,â Phedraâs smile vanished instantly. âIâm trying to help, not harm you!â
âIâve just had a prenatal examination. All good.â With that, Letitia turned to leave.
Phedra blocked her path, continuing. Do think you can get away that easily. Iâm sincerely spending money on your prenatal examination, and youâre not even grateful? Youâre going!â
Letitia dropped the pretense, sneering. âI bet itâs not a simple prenatal examination.â
âJust a prenatal examination! No tricks!â Phedra insisted. âYouâre too precious right now. You are the apple of Hawleyâs eye. I wouldnât dare lay a finger on you.â
Phedra only wanted to confirm whether the baby Letitia was carrying was Elginâs. She didnât believe her contraceptive ploy had been entirely ineffective.
There must be something fishy about Letitiaâs pregnancy
With modern medical tech, even a fetus can be DNA tested!
So, the prenatal examination was only a pretext for the real motive, which was to get Letitia to the hospital for a paternity test!
Letitia frowned. As far as she knew Phedra, Letitia understood it was never that simple.
âCome with me now, Phedra clutched her hand. âIâve booked one of the top obstetricians in the countryâ¦â
Before Letitia could respond, Phedra had dragged her into the car.
Alarm bells rang in her head. âPhedra, let me out!â
âFil take you back safe and sound after the examination, you and the baby both. What are you afraid of?â
donât trust you!â
Phedra held her down. âSit light. As long as you and the baby are fine, the Ramirez family canât fault me one bit, even if I had to tie you up and take you to the hospital!â
Her goal was the paternity test, after all Phedra couldnât believe Elgin could get Letitia pregnant so easily
Letta struggled âWhat the hell is wrong with you? Ever heard the phrase âno good deed goes unpunished?â
Stop arrugging in the car Otherwise, youâll end up hurting the baby yourself without me lifting a finger!
At the hospital, Phedra shadowed Letitiaâs every move.
Letitia had no way to top off Eloin!
Seeing Letitia comply. Phedra felt smug âJust do the examination and save yourself the trouble. Besides, Isnât this good for you and the baby? Hurry on to the next oneâ
There were over a dozen items on the prenatal checklist, among which Letitia had never even heard of
She was initially on edge, but seeing the doctors were doing regular checks and the blood draws were standard, she slowly let her guard down.
Whatever Phedra was planning at least the baby was safe.
âLast one, the ultrasound Phedra announced âGo lie down over there. Iâll call the doctorâ
Letitia eyed her. âWhat do you want?â
âJust want to see my precious grandchild.â Phedra grinned âLetitia, tell me. What if the child isnât Elginâs? Would Hawley still favor you?
It clicked instantly Youâre after the childâs DNA!
âRight, all checks are done. You can leave now if you want. Whether you do the ultrasound or not is up to youâ
Phedra had achieved her goal, her tone and expression more triumphant.
After all, she got what she wanted waiting for the results from the DNA lab!
If the child turned out to be Elginâs, sheâd accept her bad luck, blaming it on fate turning its back on her.
But if the child wasnât of the Ramirez blood, thatâd be quite the show!
Letitia went pale. What should she do? She didnât even know who the father was! She knew it couldnât be Elginâs!
Once the results came out and Phedra had them, all would be doomed! The child wouldnât stand a chance!
âPhedra you lowlife scum!â Letitia clenched her teeth. âShameless!â
âWhy so worked up? Or the child isnât Elginâs? Phedra probed âLetitia, maybe you should come clean now. Do you have a lover on
the side?â
Letitia turned and walked away
Sheâd fallen right into Phedraâs trap! If only she knew, she wouldâve found a way to escape at all costs!
âOff you goâ Phedras triumphant attitude was on full display. âIâll let you know the results. Brace yourself.â
Letitia picked up the pace and yanked open the door to the ultrasound room.
But bam! She walked straight into a broad and familiar embrace.
âElgin?â Letitia looked up and exclaimed in surprise.
His face was stony, his eyes quickly scanning her to ensure she wasnât hurt.
Then he turned his gaze to Phedra. âIf anything had happened to her, Iâd have you packing your bags and out of the Ramirez family tonight!â
Phedra shot back with confidence. âI was giving her a prenatal examination. Iâm her family and should care about her. Ask her if you donât believe me!â
Letitia was at a loss for words, managing to reply. Iâm fine. What brings you here?â
She hadnât texted Elgin. How did he figure out she was missing and track her to the hospital?
Elgins eyes were icy and indifferent. âYou think itâs cool to skip out on work and wander around? Am I not supposed to come looking for you?â
