Chapter 29: Miss president

(That's Azalea on top)

Cove's POV, Friday...

Today is the day I'm going to meet River's cousin. Even though I was nervous at first, I've started to get more and more excited as time passes.

We're going to be best friends! And now I'll have someone to stay with when River has to go do things. Well, that's if she likes me.

Yeah I've been going back and forth about this a lot, but I've grown to realize that whatever happens happens. Worrying about it won't change anything.

"Ready baby?" River called from downstairs. School is about to start but right now I'm in my room packing a few things for tonight.

"Yep!" I answered as I zipped up my small bag and picked it up. I only packed a change of clothes and something to sleep in. River already bought me a toothbrush and I left a few hair ties at his house last time. That's all I really need.

"This morning we have a assembly," I stated once I got downstairs, even though I'm pretty sure River already knows that. All week has been election week and today they're finally announcing the winners.

"Yeah, I don't think I'll go, it's pointless," he said. I pouted as I got into his car.

"It's not pointless! It's what determines whether or not we'll have chicken wings for lunch every Wednesday from now on."

"Exactly, pointless. What the cafeteria serves for lunch isn't very important to me."

"True but it's other things too! Like...well I can't think of anything right now but it's important!" River just looked at me like I proved his point while he pulled into the school parking lot and parked up front.

"Ugh never mind, you'll see." I gave up and took his hand as we walked inside. To my surprise, River walked with me all the way to the auditorium. That means he's gonna stay!

I smiled up at his as a silent thank you, to which he nodded his head with a small smile back. We walked in and sat on the bleachers towards the back.

Soon, my friends sat in the row in front of us. I'm glad they're starting to get used to River, it might take some time for them to completely adjust though.

"Good morning students!" Our principal Mrs.Every suddenly appeared from behind the stage with a microphone.

There were a series of "good mornings" and "hellos" before everyone quieted down and focused up front to where all of the candidates are standing in a vertical line.

I spotted Leah standing towards the right and gave her a eager wave. We made eye contact and she mouthed "I'm nervous."

"It's okay Leah, you got this!" I mouthed back, giving her a thumbs up. She hesitantly nodded and I gave her one last encouraging smile before the principal drew everyone's attention back to her.

"Alright alright, I know that everyone's dying to know so I'll just go right in. But really quick before we start-" She was cut off by a bunch of groans and sighs of impatience.

"Okay okay, I was just going to say good luck to everyone and you all did well. I am very proud of how our school has come together for this. Now let's begin."

I looked at River nervously and he silently laughed at me. I then frowned and he apologized, putting his hand on my thigh. I smiled victoriously, then turned back to face the front.

"We'll start with the representatives. First we have our freshman candidates, Earl Levi, Penny Wise, and James Whitney."

"With 107 votes, James comes in third place." James looked down disappointedly, making me immediately feel bad even though I don't know him.

"Good try James. Earl and Penny are very close. With 218 votes... we have Earl as the runner up, leaving Penny Wise to be our next freshmen representative with 240 votes!"

(Wait, I just realized Penny Wise is like Pennywise the clown. I swear that was an accident. Ehh, I'm too lazy to change it)

Everyone clapped and cheered as Penny smiled brightly. Even though I didn't get to vote for the freshmen representative since I'm not a freshman, I'm happy with their choice. I like her, she seems really nice.

Mr. Every then went on to name the rest of the representatives and a few other positions that aren't very important. A kid named Carlo won for sophomore representative, but I don't like him very much.

Now comes the most important part. After Mrs.Every announced the secretary and Treasure, she had Leah and her competitors step forward.

"Here we have all of our candidates for vice-president. Now I must say, each and every one of you did an amazing job advertising your campaigns. I think that any one of you would make a great vice-president, but there can only be one winner."

Leah made brief eyes contact with me and I gave her a huge smile. She's got this in the bag, I know it.

"Okay, we have our seven candidates. I'll get right to it, in seventh place we have Orion with 38 votes. In sixth we have Candice with 67 votes."

She continued down the line until she got to the top three. Leah is still standing there, gaining confidence by the second.

"Alright and we have our top three! Give them a quick applause for making it so far." I clapped along with many other for a few moments until it quieted back down.

"Okay I'll just rip the bandage off, in third place with 361 votes in Lorena Marcus. You did great honey, maybe next time."

I held in a squeal as I leaned forward. It's now between Leah and her biggest competitor, Joshua Ray. He's a junior and as far as I know, he's been very popular, especially with the guys. I think he wants to bring back dodgeball in gym class or something, pretty immature and boring if you ask me.

"I don't really want Joshua to win," River whispered in my ear. I gave him a glare and narrowed my eyes.

"I though you didn't care about this."

"Well I do know, that f*cker is so loud and annoying all the f*cking time. He doesn't need this to boost his ego any higher then it already is." He shrugged.

I giggled at his reasoning and curse words, typical River. I shouldn't have expected anything else from him.

"Both of you did so well but there's a clear winner here. With the outstanding difference of 769 votes versus 512, we have our winner."

I held my breath as I waited for her to say the winning name. She's delaying this on purpose. People started chanting names all around us, Joshua being the loudest.

Oh no, what if he wins? Leah would be devastated!

"The next vice-president for this school year is............"

"Leah Black!"

I clapped and cheered along with my friends and many others. I didn't realize how many people actually support Leah.

We have a giant school population, and for Leah to get 769 votes is HUGE.

Joshua looked at Leah angrily before rolling his eyes and practically stomping up the bleachers, sitting down with his friends.

After getting a little medal and a certificate, Leah came up to join us. Her smile is giant and it looks like it won't go away for the next few days.

"Leah you did it!" Emma cheered.

"Yes, it's all because of you guys. You made me the signs and supported me throughout this whole thing! Thank you."

"Aww you're welcome," Sydney said, dramatically flipping her hair.

"Yeah Syd, I think your sign really scared them into voting for Leah, good job." They all laughed at my joke as Leah sat down.

Mrs.Every then did the whole thing over, this time announcing the president. At our school, only seniors can run for president. I'm not sure if it's like that at other schools too.

A girl named Alexandra ended up winning. She's not the one I voted for, I voted for a guy named Tim who came third place. That's okay though, Alexandra is still really good and I bet she'll work great with Leah.

After the assembly finished, I walked down the bleachers with River. My friends went with Leah to go meet the other people who go elected.

"Baby you should go with Leah, she needs you," River softly said.

"Are you sure? I'm the one who wanted you to come, I don't want to leave you alone." I looked up at him unsurely.

"Yes of course, go be with your friend for a little while! I'll be right here watching, I'm just fine."

I nodded and gave him a light peck on the jaw before making my way towards Leah and everyone else with a smile on my face.

My smile quickly faded though when I noticed Leah looking pretty upset, talking to someone surrounded by a group of guys. I can't tell who it is from here.

As I got closer, I recognized the voice talking as Joshua's voice. Oh boy, this can't be good.

"Dude, there's literally no way you beat me! You? Really? You really think you did better than me?"

"I don't necessarily think I'm better then you, more people just liked what I had to-"

"No! That's bullsh*t! No one likes you Leah, something went wrong okay? No one likes you so get that under that thick skin of yours."

At this point I'm standing behind Leah, next to a angry looking Sydney. What is this about? Why is he so mad at Leah?

"Joshua, I won fair and square and you know it. Just drop it. You'll have better luck next time, but for now I won and you can't change that. Get over it."

"Get over it? No! No I won't get over it. I know that I did not get beat by a girl. A pathetic little girl who's only worth one mediocre f*ck."

Everyone went silent. That, that was too far. I don't really understand why they're arguing, but whatever the reason is, he crossed the line.

"Really? Did she hurt your ego that bad? You probably have a small d*ck anyways, let's go," Sydney grabbed Leah's arm and started pulling her away with Lizzy, Emma and I following.

Just as we were about to turn the corner, I heard the sound of flesh smacking flesh.

(Any guesses?)

All four of us snapped our heads back. There stands Ian, quite literally beating Joshua's face in.

I looked at Leah's wide eyes and smirked. They're already the perfect couple, even though they aren't dating yet.

"Leah you have to stop him." My thoughts were interrupted by Emma. That's when the realization of the whole situation hit me, Ian is going to break something at this rate!

"H-how? What do I do?" Leah stuttered. She looks pretty scared and intimidated by Ian.

"I don't know, go talk to him or something!" Lizzy chimed in. Leah slowly nodded before jogging up to Ian.

She cautiously placed her hand on his shoulder. That made him immediately freeze and stand up straight.

Leah started saying something to him in order to clam him down, but I can't hear from where I'm standing. I tried to move closer but got stopped by a arm pulling me back.

"Don't go over there baby, stay here." River ordered softly yet firmly. I leaned back and nodded against his chest. I'll just have to ask her about it later.

"What happened there? It looked like they were fighting."

"I'm not completely sure since I got there late, but it seems like Joshua really didn't appreciate the fact that he lost to Leah."

"Oh, must of hurt his huge ego. You know, if he jumped from his ego down to his IQ level, he would die."

I was laughing at River's joke when suddenly a bunch of security guards and the school nurse came running by.

Ian then got dragged away from Leah and Joshua as the nurse crouched down and placed an ice pack on Joshua's cheek. What is that supposed to do?

"See, that's why I didn't want you to go. You might have gotten in trouble for being involved even if you really were just standing there."

"Oh," was all I managed to say. I didn't really think of that. I'm glad River stopped me, or I might've no longer had a clean record.

"You can just knock."

We just arrived at River's house after a long day of celebrating during classes and especially during lunch.

We didn't see Ian or Joshua for the rest of the day, so I assume they both went home. I kind of wish I were them because the amount of celebrating we did nearly gave me a headache.

Don't get me wrong, I love Leah a lot, but that was just a little much. I'm glad it's the weekend and I get a break from all that.

"Okay." I skipped up to the door and hesitantly knocked. I thought for a second that it was too quite, but I was proven wrong when the door swung open and revealed a beautiful looking girl.

She has long ebony hair that's so dark it looks almost black. Her eyes are green, almost hazel like. It wouldn't take a genius to realize that her and River are related, their similarities are evident.

"U-um Azalea, right?" Of course I just had to stutter, she probably thinks I'm weird now.

"Yes, who are you?" Her voice sounded just as mesmerizing as her features. It holds some kind of accent that sounds a little bit French, but also like something else.

A French accent would make sense since shes from France, but I don't think it's that.

"I'm Cove, River's boyfriend," I answered with a warm smile. Maybe they're not that close and that's why River hasn't told her about me yet.

"River Smith! How come you never told me about this beauty?" I got surprised when she yelled at River who's still walking up to the door, holding both of our bags in his arms.

A light blush coated my cheeks at her complement. She called me pretty, even though she's the one who looks like a freaking model.

He simply shrugged and placed a light kiss on the top of my head before walking inside. I followed him in and we all walked to the living room.

"How long have you two been dating? How'd you meet? Where'd you meet? I have so many questions River, you better get started!"

"No hello? No hi I missed you, nice to see you. Jeez woman, you're so demanding." River laid down on the couch and I sat next to him while Azalea sat across from us on a arm chair.

"Sorry, I'm just... shocked that you finally settled down. We go 7 months without seeing each other, and I come back to you having a girlfriend. That's a strange sight."

"Okay well, this is Cove as you already know and we've been dating for a little over a month. It's a long story how we met, but we go to the same school."

Azalea pondered his answer for a moment before nodding her head slowly.

"Okay, make sense. It's a little weird to see you dating some one so, delicate looking, but I guess they say opposites attract."

"Who said we're opposites? She could beat your a** in a fight for all you know," River joked.

I don't even want to imagine getting into a fight with her. Even if I was a little skilled, she looks like she can chop someone in half with her pinky. Definitely the last girl I'd want to fight with.

"Hmm, I guess you're right. Wouldn't want to risk getting my a** handed to me by someone just because of how they look." She shrugged and leaned back.

"See, there's nothing to worry about. She's nice," River whispered to me. I nodded and leaned against his chest.

She is really nice and so far she's been nothing but inviting. The way she creates a playful atmosphere makes me feel ten times more comfortable then I would if she didn't.

"Is anyone else hungry? I'm starving, let's order pizza." Azalea didn't wait for anyone to answer before grabbing her phone and turning it on.

"River I know you like anything, but what do you want Cove?" Oh no, now I have to talk again. Okay, I can't stutter this time.

"I just like pepperoni or cheese with pineapple." That wasn't too hard! I always make it sound worse in my head.

"You like pineapple on your pizza?" Azalea asked as she dialed up the nearest pizza shop's number.

"Yes," I answered, silently daring her to make fun of it. I don't care who you are, I will always protect my pineapple pizza. If it means murdering you bare-handed and dumping your body in a freezing cold river, then so be it.

"Me too," she said to my surprise. Good, I don't really feel like getting my hands dirty. River chuckled at us and I grinned up at him.

I really like this, River being so open and less cold around people other then me.

An hour quickly passes by where they both caught up, occasionally bringing me into the conversation. Before I knew it, the pizza arrived.

"I'll get it," Azalea said when the doorbell rang. River and I set the table while she paid the delivery guy and brought in the pizza.

"Okay, I went ahead and just got one medium pepperoni pizza with pineapple, and a small sausage pizza for River."

"That's good," River answered for both of us. She nodded as we all sat down, me sitting next to River and her at the edge.

"So, how was your flight?" River initiated a conversation.

"Ehh, it was some what empty. There weren't a lot of people around me so I was comfortable. I'd still rather go on our private jet though," she shrugged.

"Private jet?" I questioned aloud. She must rich too! I think all of River's family is rich with the amount of money his parents make.

"Yeah, we usually take it on our trips but my Dad was using it. River and his parents have their own one too."

I looked at River in disbelief.

"Yep," he confirmed.

"Wow, I've I always wanted to fly in one."

"You will eventually, when we go on vacation together." I love how River says when instead of if, he's making a promise.

I nodded slowly as I began eating my pizza.

Azalea takes after River. She ended up eating 5 slices in the time I ate 2 and a half.

"You're a slow eater," she complained as I tried to hurry and finish up my third slice.

I narrowed my eyes at her, "you just eat fast, like River." They both laughed at me but dropped it in the end once I finished.

"Alright, I going to go to bed. The jet lag is really taking a toll on my body. See you in the morning." With that, Azalea stood up and walked upstairs to what I assume is a guest bedroom.

"It's still pretty early, do you want to go out?" River asked as we started to clean up.

"Like where?" I replied. It's barely 6:00 but River lives pretty far away from town. By time we arrive and chose a place, it will probably be getting dark.

"I don't know, maybe we can go get dessert. We can get ice cream or go to a dessert place," he suggested.

As much as I love ice cream, I want to try something new tonight.

"The dessert place," I answered.

"Dessert place it is."

River's POV

After 30 minutes, we arrived at the small dessert restaurant called "Night time sweets." I'm not sure why it's called that because they open a little bit after lunch starts.

"Is it just me or did we get here really quickly?" Cove asks as I help her out of the car. The jacket I let her borrow fell down past her butt as she stood up, making her look adorable.

I shrugged in reply. I may or may not have been speeding the whole way here.

We went inside and sat down at a little booth towards the front. The waiter brought us a small red menu seconds after we sat before disappearing in the back.

"There's ice cream Cove," I said, pointing at a section called "cold treats." She nodded in acknowledgment, although she mainly focused on a different part.

After a few minutes, I picked something out."Did you choose yet?" I ask Cove.

"Yes! The chocolate covered strawberries with strawberry creme cheesecake sounds tea good." Shocking, I really thought she'd choose something with ice cream.

The waiter then came and I ordered both of our things. It only took about 10 minutes for them to come since the place is pretty empty.

I immediately dug into my orange tart. It's sound gross but it's actually really good.

"Do you like it Cove?" I always make sure that she likes her food, especially when I bring her to places she's never been.

"Yes it's really good, try it!" I nodded and took some with my own fork, putting it in my mouth.

The cheesecake and chocolate parts nearly melted on my tongue while I had to chew the strawberry. It's a perfect mix.

"Yes that good, maybe I should go with that next time," I said.

"You should! See, I always make the best decisions." Cove shook her head and dramatically looked off into the distance.

What is with this girl? She is so strange, but that only makes me fall for her even harder.
