Chapter 575: Chapter 559 Dinosaurs (Isekai Version)

“Am I… really looking at the top of a mountain?” I said with some hesitancy as I stared at the scenery below us.

“Umu, what does Master think?” asked Grandpa Gon.

“To think that there really is a forest inside a mountain,” I muttered.

[1] That’s right, it was already amazing enough to see a forest growing out of the top of a mountain, but this forest was actually inside the caldera of an enormous old volcano. That thing must have been huge back in the day, but rain, wind and time had eroded the lava away leaving a scooped-out area inside the mountain.

Moreover, the trees inside this volcano were… a little different from a normal forest. There were a lot of fern-like plants, for example. There were even trees with thick fern-type leaves growing on top of a fairly thin trunk.

In short, it looked like the backdrop of a Jurassic [1] Park movie. In fact, I think I’ve seen those trees in a picture book on dinosaurs that I once had as a child.

The environment here was definitely different from anything that I have seen thus far, even from the ones on Earth. In the first place, the temperature and air of this place were very odd.

The weather at the Royal Capital was neither too hot nor too cold. It was perfectly cool with a sunny sky that calls to mind a clear spring day, so it was really comfortable.

As we got closer to the mountain, I started noticing piles of snow here and there. More and more snow collected the higher we get to the peak.

I was riding on Grandpa Gon, so I could not feel the cold that much, but seeing the solidly packed snow made me worried. Should I get my winter gear out for this trip?

[1] Then, as soon as we cleared the top of the mountain and flew over the gap on top, there was a sudden temperature change. It abruptly became very hot. It was so hot that I actually started sweating. Something I haven’t done since I started riding on Grandpa Gon as the higher atmosphere is naturally quite cold.

The environment here was different, ‘special’ in Fer’s words.

It was similar, yet different enough to Uranus that I was starting to become worried.

“”Aruji~ aruji~ the leaves here are funny~”” n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

Sui had extended her tentacles to touch one of the fern-like fronds. The fronds suddenly closed at her touch [2] and she giggled.

““Hey! How is it doing that!? I want to try it too!!”” Dora-chan zipped over to the tree to touch its leaves.

The long fronds folded in on itself.

“”This is fun!””

“”Sui wants to touch more~!!””

My two small familiars began touching the leaves, shrieking in delight when they folded shut. Ahh, they are so cute~~

Seeing them have innocent fun like this warms my heart~

Suddenly, a chill stabbed through my chest.

“Wait, I forgot to inform the Guild that I’ll be travelling on Grandpa Gon!! Augghhh!! Willem-san is going to scold me again!!”

“Humph, here I was, wondering what you’re worrying about. It’s something trivial again.”

“Master, we are already here, so there’s no point worrying,” said Grandpa Gon.

Hahhh….

Gush—

Bibyuu—!

“Wh-what’s with all those weird noises?” I muttered. “Is it really alright?”

“It’s just some noise. Please rest assured, Master,” said Grandpa Gon.

“You guys are the ones who forced me to come. I never wanted to be here, so I can feel whatever I want!” I snapped.

“”Kukuku, even so, Master is too nervous~ We’re here aren’t we, heheheh~~!!””

Tch, this Dora-chan.

“”Aruji~~ Sui will protect you~~””

“Ahh~~ Sui-tan is still the best, sob.”

The ground was so rough that I rode on Fer’s back as he bounded easily over boulders and clumps of vegetation. Sui rode on Fer’s back with me and I’m now hugging her to my chest for reassurance.

“To think that this kind of person is my master… haahh…”

“What was that, Fer? Why are you sighing like that?” I growled.

Grandpa Gon coughed and said, “I’m sure he doesn’t mean it, Master.” He was scratching his cheek with a long nail, looking uncomfortable.

[1] When we landed inside the volcano, I thought of waiting for them in a clearing, but… there was no real ‘clearing’ in this Jurassic-park-ish jungle, moreover, the noises that surrounded us were… eerie to say the least. In the end, I opted to follow them. At the very least, I would be protected by Fer and Grandpa Gon’s barriers and Sui would defend me from anything.

Also, Fer and Grandpa Gon insisted that it was safe for me to come with them since the monsters here were ‘particularly dumb’.

“Although, since they are so stupid, they may not recognise how a barrier works and piled themselves on top of our barriers trying to get to Master, which would be unpleasant.”

“Umu, that certainly sounds like something that would happen to our Master.”

“H-hey, stop it! What are you two imagining!?”

“”Sui will pew pew monster mountain~!””

“You too, Sui?!”

“Our Master is such a timid person,” Grandpa Gon sighed. “Though I supposed that can’t be helped.”

“Humph, with our barrier, even if Master happened to be swallowed by a beast, he won’t be eaten. Well, he won’t be digested at least.”

“… …” I- I can’t believe these two are casually talking about my demise!

In the end, I ended up going with them. Not because I was afraid of being eaten or anything, but because the creepy sounds and the spooky forest were too much for my poor mental health.

Sob.

I also don’t want to be swallowed by a monster, digested or not.

After some time running around, Sui said, “”Monsters… where~~?””

“”Oi, are you sure there are monsters in this forest?”” Dora-chan asked.

The monsters haven’t appeared yet, but my nerves are already frazzled. I’m starting to wish they would just pop out so that I can get this nervous feeling over with.

“Humph, there’s no way I’m going back until I’ve stomped on a few of them,” said Fer.

“I believe there’s a scouting party just ahead of us,” said Grandpa Gon.

The rest of us quickly looked around but saw nothing. Then, I heard it. A strange rustling sound. Suddenly, something small dashed out from the undergrowth to stand before us.

“”It’s mister lizard~?””

The three lizards, they could not be anything but lizards of some sort, were standing in front of us on two hindlegs. There were three of them and were about the height of my knees, so, I barely felt any fear. After all, I had seen many worse things ever since coming into this world.

Bigger and more ferocious things.

Even so, these little lizards looked kind of familiar…

They reminded me of dinosaurs, but much, much smaller. The way they tilted their heads and clicked at each other gave off a rather comical, even charming effect. Sui obviously thought so too as she leapt out of my arms to bounce forward and said, ““Mister lizard~~ let’s be friends~~””

Ahhh~~ what a heartwarming scene~~

“Oi, don’t-”

The little lizard’s head snapped forward and chomped into Sui’s extended tentacle.

“Wha-”

The other two lizards darted forward to jump on Sui and started chomping at her.

“Gyaahhh—-!!!! Sui—!!!!”

““Mu, Sui don’t like this~ Ei~!!””

[1] Suddenly, the creatures that had been biting and stomping on Sui rolled onto their backs and started foaming in the mouth. Then, they melted into a puddle…

“”Woah, that’s so awesome~!!”” Dora-chan declared.

“You released Acid from your body?”

“While crude, it is an effective technique for a Slime,” said Grandpa Gon contemplatively.

“”Hehe~ Sui is really strong~~””

Even as Sui bobbed and weaved in place, [1] I could only cover my mouth with my hand and try not to think about the melting puddle of little dinosaurs.

“Oi, heads up. More are coming.”

““More?””

“There are more?!” I howled.

“Indeed, those three were the scouts, the main attacking body would arrive soon.”

“Wait, that means…”

“Sui, Dora-chan, get ready. The enemy may be small, but they are numerous. So, stay alert.”

““Tch, small fries are so annoying.””

“”Sui will pew pew them~! Pew pew~!””

[1] Soon, there was a sound of pattering rain. No wait, that wasn’t the rain at all, it was… it was footsteps! A whole bunch of footsteps!!

In a flash, we found ourselves swarmed by a large group of knee-heigh dinosaurs. [1] These little ankle-biters–!! These literal ankle biters!!!

“I-I remember now! I saw these in that Jurassic movie! A whole bunch of these little jumping dinosaurs attacked a man and devoured him like piranhaaaasss!!!”

Tiny beady eyes suddenly turned to me. I slapped a hand over my mouth but it was too late. I had caught their attention.

“Gyaa–!! Don’t come over!!”

“”Sui won’t let you bully Aruji ~! Ei~!!””

“”Hey, Sui’s not the only cool one here! Take that!””

Acid Bullets and small Ice Spears started flying around in the air.

“Oi, Sui, Dora-chan, don’t get too close to those things,” said Fer.

Immediately anxious, I asked, “Hey, what are you talking about, why-”

Buooohhh–!!

Fire! Those damn things spew fire!!

“Why are they spewing fire?!” I howled with outrage and shock.

“”Gah, how dare you… Take this!””

Guooohhh—!

Pseudo Dragon Breath exploded from Dora-chan’s mouth to incinerate the little dinosaurs.

“Don’t! You’ll set the jungle on fire!!” I shrieked.

Why, oh why in the world would a dinosaur spit fire?!

[2] Mimosa pudica is not actually part of the fern-family, but it does have long leaves, so I get how Eguchi-san (and Mukouda) would mistakenly think that it was from that side of the genera. It’s actually part of the pea family and an annoying weed where Gumi is from.
