Suin was determined not to back down.
Even if it meant facing life-and-death stakes, she swore she wouldnât retreat in front of Seo Jaehee. She had promised herself that, over and over again, for the briefest of moments.
âDid you forget?â
She faltered.
Barely three seconds passed before Jaeheeâs overwhelming presence forced her a step back.
â...Whatâs there to forget?â
Suin smoothly turned back toward her desk, feigning nonchalance. She grabbed her bag, making it seem as if stepping back had been her intention all along.
âI have nothing to say.â
Jaeheeâs shadow loomed over her, eclipsing her entirely.
Ignoring it, Suin busied herself, slipping her tablet and phone into her bag with calculated calm.
âReally?â
The sultry warmth of his breath caressed the nape of her neck as he spoke, sending an icy-hot shiver down her spine.
âHey!â
Suin snapped, spinning around.
Jaehee was right there, towering over her, his body blocking her entire field of vision as he leaned closer, his intense gaze locked on hers.
âIf youâre planning to run, donât even try.â
â...â
Regret hit her like a wave.
She had provoked him, she had turned her back on himâand now, there was no way out unless she physically shoved him aside.
âWhat do you even want to talk about?â
Knowing she couldnât undo her mistakes, Suin decided to fight back instead.
âHow many times do I have to repeat myself like a broken record?â
â...â
âHow many times do I need to say it before youâre satisfied? Not that you even listen.â
âSay something worth listening to. Not something I donât want to hear.â
âForget it. Iâm not doing this.â
The real problem was the heat.
No matter how much she tried to stay cold and indifferent, her body betrayed her. Jaeheeâs smoldering gaze trailed her face and lips with such relentless intensity that her temperature seemed to rise against her will.
She felt flushed.
âAnswer me.â
His expression only made things worse.
Every ounce of his emotionâfrustration, desperation, and raw heatâwas written all over his face, transparent and unrestrained.
âWhy isnât it me? Why Baek Ihyeon?â
âWhy does it have to be you?â
âItâs obviousâit should be me.â
As always, Seo Jaehee was the root of the problem.
His obsession seeped through his gaze, his words were filled with exasperation, and even his breathing carried traces of hurt.
How could anyone not be shaken by a man like that?
âLee Suinâs man should be me. Only me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I said so.â
A man like him, so utterly confident, so unhesitant...
It was impossible for her heart not to race.
âYouâre the only woman in my life, Suin.â
â...â
Her heart didnât just raceâit felt like it was about to burst. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but it was useless.
âMe? The woman in your life?â
Suddenly, she was furious.
âHow can you say something like that with a straight face?â
Once the anger started bubbling, it poured out like a dam breaking through the smallest of cracks.
âYou didnât contact me once in the past ten years!â
Her voice rose, almost shouting, but it wasnât just angerâit was something deeper.
âNot even a simple âhow are you,â not a single email or text!â
Her outburst wasnât just about the present. It came from something buried deep inside herâemotions sheâd hidden for so long that they had taken root.
The face that came to her mind unbidden, the fleeting whispers of his name in the wind, and the feelings she had to suppress all on her own.
The words she had whispered to herself in those quiet moments:
âSo youâre leaving without a word, huh?â
âI graduated, Jaehee. Did you graduate too, Jaehee?â
âNot even one call⦠Guess you didnât care enough to wonder.â
âForget it. Weâre living separate lives now anyway.â
Suin was hurt.
Deep down, she had felt that same sting of disappointment.
âAnd now, after all this time, you want me? What kind of nonsense is that?â
â...â
âDo you think Iâm some dog whoâll come running, wagging its tail, the moment you call?â
God, she hated this.
âEnough.â
The emotions she had unleashed spilled over, leaving her regretful and bitter. Even that regret felt ridiculous.
âJust stop.â
With a sigh of exasperation, Suin twisted her shoulders, gripping the handle of her bag tightly, intending to walk away.
But Jaehee didnât step aside.
Instead, he let out a low breath and said, âI couldnât.â
Suin froze.
Looking down at her, his storm-gray eyes now carried a heavy, wistful sorrow.
âI sealed my emotions away.â
Sealed?
The unfamiliar word made Suin blink in confusion.
âIt was the best I could do,â he explained, his gaze softening.
âIf I so much as exchanged a few words with you, I wouldnât have been able to stay in the U.S. If Iâd heard your voice, Iâd have wanted to return to Korea immediately.â
His words carried raw sincerity, each one exhaled with intensity.
âSo I had to seal the version of me that was completely consumed by you.â
A little heightened.
âAnd yetâ¦â
A lot desperate.
âYou were all I thought about. It was always you.â
Suin was at a loss for words.
âMadly so.â@@novelbin@@
The sheer weight of his emotions, so urgent and nearly desperate, made her own feelings seem trivial, like petulant whining.
âWhat am I supposed to do? The moment I saw you after coming back to Korea⦠it all came undone.â
Damn it.
âI couldnât hold back anymore, nor was there any reason to.â
Damn it.
âDo you understand now? It wasnât a sudden realizationâitâs always been you. I never let you go.â
Suinâs throat tightened, her emotions welling up uncontrollably.
âEven during those ten years, even before that, Lee Suin⦠youâve always been my first love.â
First love.
Jaeheeâs last words struck a chord deep within her, stirring a mix of emotions that threatened to suffocate her.
Her eyes stung, but she forced herself to hold back tears, blinking hard.
â...Not me.â
She spoke slowly, her voice as composed and emotionless as she could manage.
âI donât feel anything deep for you. Honestly, I donât even know. Iâve never thought about it.â
It was the truth.
To Suin, men were no more than classmates, colleagues, or acquaintances.
Perhaps it was the resentment and anger sheâd harbored toward her fatherâthe first man in her lifeâthat had made relationships with men feel irrelevant to her.
The only man who had ever stirred her emotions, though, was Seo Jaehee.
âHeâs the only one for me, too.â
Maybe⦠maybe he was her first love as well.
Maybe theyâ¦
âAnd thatâs why I canât understand your feelings.â
Suin pushed the surge of emotions back behind a locked door, suppressing them with force.
Because once these feelings faded, as they inevitably would, theyâd leave behind nothing but scars on her heart, like shallow puddles evaporating in the sun.
âMy feelings havenât changed. I told you ten years ago, didnât I? No. I donât want you.â
âThat was a lie.â
âWhy would I lie to you?â
âI donât know why. But your eyes were lying.â
âWhat do you mean you know that?â
âBecause you looked like you were about to cry.â
Suin flinched.
Seo Jaehee never missed a thing.
She had thought she had deceived him well, but once again, he had seen right through her.
Because, back then, she really had wanted to cry.
And he had noticed.
âI donât want to talk about the past. Iâve already given you my answer. Respect it and stay in your lane.â
âWhat was your answer again?â
âYou forgot?â
âYeah.â
âI told youâI have someone else.â
âAnd itâs not Baek Ihyeon, is it?â
âIt is Baek Ihyeon.â
âHmm.â
âDo you want me to say it again? Baek Ihyeon and I have mutual feelings for each other!â
Her firm insistence was met with an unexpected reactionâa brief, almost mocking chuckle.
His sudden laughter felt ominous.
Shouldnât he be angry?
âWhy are you laughing?â
âBecause of you.â
âWhen have I ever been funny?â
âYou are. Very.â
Confused, she demanded an answer, but Jaehee, his faint smirk lingering, replied with his usual arrogance.
âHonestly, Lee Suin, youâre surprisingly sloppy.â
âWhatâ¦?â
âYou give me all these hints, but you expect me not to figure it out?â
âWhat are you talking aboutââ
Before she could finish, Jaehee stepped closer, his eyes flashing with a sudden intensity.
âSaying you have mutual feelings means youâre not actually together.â
What?
âIt means nothing has happened between the two of youâyet.â
Ah.
She had made a fatal mistake.
The word âmutual feelingsâ implied nothing concrete, no definitive relationship. By saying that, she had essentially revealed that her position was still open.
âIn other words, Baek Ihyeon and I are starting from the same place.â
Jaeheeâs lips curved into a dark smile, his gaze sharp and predatory.
âNo, thatâs not right.â
Before she could respond, he growled his next words, low and dangerous.
âIâm starting first.â
Without warning, his large hand gripped the back of her neck and pulled her forward.
And then, his lips crushed hers.
