â
Joe smoked his cigar and sneered as he watched the police officers attack Haylan.
All the police officers present were Joeâs rightâhand men and often bullied commoners with him. In addition, they were very skilled in dealing with criminals.
With their help. Joe was confident that Haylan would be defeated.
Joe could almost imagine how pitiful Haylan would look after the beating, with a bleeding nose and swollen eyes.
Meanwhile, Haylan remained calm and didnât even bother dodging the police officersâ attacks.
âBang!â
The interrogation roomâs door was suddenly kicked open just as the police officersâ weapons were about to land on Haylan. Then, an angry shout was heard. âStop!â
Hearing the voice, the expressions of the police officers who were about to attack Haylan changed.
They immediately stopped what they were doing and turned to look at the person standing by the door, shocked.
All of them knew who the voice belonged to.
Joe, too, quickly turned around when he heard the voice. When he saw the person by the interrogation roomâs door, the cigar in his mouth almost fell to the ground. Trembling, Joe asked, âSuperintendent, why⦠why are you here?â
Standing by the interrogation roomâs door was a blackâeyed, middleâaged man with a bulging belly and a balding head who appeared to be in his fifties.
However, the manâs gaze was piercing. He also radiated a dignified and authoritative aura that demanded respect.
Joe hurriedly stubbed out his cigar, forced a smile onto his face, and asked, âMr. Ockham, whyâ¦
why are you here?â The man was Joe and the police officersâ immediate superior, secondâclass police superintendent Walter Ockham. âWhy? Canât I be here?â Ockham asked coldly.
âYes, of course. This is your territory. Of course, you can be here,â Joe quickly answered.
Ockham walked in and scanned the scene. Ockham asked Joe, his gaze as sharp as a knife, âWhat law did this gentleman break for you to treat him like this?â
âMr. Ockham, this person is Longhard Kingdomâs citizen. Heâs extremely vicious and kills people like flies. He started a massacre in Massach General Hospital but refused to confess. Thatâs why weâre interrogating him now,â Joe explained.
âOh, is that so? Why did I hear a different account then?â Ockham asked coldly.
âMr. Ockham, youâ¦.â Joe was stunned.
Ockham took out a tablet and threw it to Joe as he said coldly, âAccording to my understanding of that matter, Haylan is the victim. He was defending himself. Heâs not guilty even if he kills all those people.
âNow, release Haylan immediately!â
âMr. Ockham, this man is a murderer, âJoe quickly retorted.
Ockhamâs eyes turned cold when he heard this. In a low voice, he questioned, âMurderer?
According to our kingdomâs laws, an individual can only be convicted after the court passes its judgment.
âBesides, Iâve also investigated this matter. Are you saying that the evidence I have cannot prove heâs not guilty?
âOr are you suspecting the evidence I gathered?â
âI wouldnât dare,â Joe said hurriedly.
The position of the firstâclass police superintendent in their unit was now vacant. As the secondâ
class police superintendent, Ockham could be promoted to firstâclass police superintendent anytime and become the highestâranking oflicer in their departinent.
As a mere sergeant, Joe did not dare go against Ockham.
âRelease Mr. Jaber!â Ockham ordered.
Although he was unhappy about Ockhamâs decision, Joe could only grit his teeth, turn to one of his subordinates, and order, âLet him go.â
At the same time, Joe suddenly felt ominous about the matter.
Ockham was obviously here for Haylan. Joe wondered if Haylan and Ockham were related in some way.
Joe knew he was in serious trouble if that was the case.
Hearing Joeâs order, the subordinate could only take out the key and unlock the handcuffs on Haylan.
âNo, not you. Donât unlock it,â Haylan said in a deep voice.
As Haylan spoke, he released a powerful force of energy that sent Joeâs subordinate flying. The key in the subordinateâs hand also fell before Haylan.
Haylan kicked the key to Joeâs feet and stared at him coldly as he said, âSergeant Joe, you were the one who arrested me. Naturally, you are the one who has to unlock my handcuffs. And you have to apologize to me.â
The key lay quietly at Joeâs feet.
âHaylan, donât push your luck!â Joe growled.
Allowing Haylan to go free was already Joe compromising.
If he had to unlock Haylanâs handcuffs and apologize to Haylan personally, Joe would be utterly humiliated. He would not have any authority to lead his subordinates in the future then.
âIâm pushing my luck? Sergeant Joe, you took Bernardâs money and incarcerated me even though I was innocent. Isnât it only natural that you set me free now?â
Ockham steadied himself when he heard Haylanâs words. He then turned his eyes to Joe and asked, âJoe, you were paid?â
Joeâs expression paled when he heard Ockhamâs question and a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He suddenly had a sinking feeling in his stomach.
Joe thought, âIâm done for. How am I going to explain
