Chapter 17: The Bad Boy Is My Enemy (17)

The Bad Boy Is My EnemyWords: 11959

It all happens so fast, I want it to end. Principle Foreman and various other teachers rush into the yard, confiscating phones that are seen to have video footage as they shove and break up the crowd. Foreman pulls at the back of Jace's shirt, who is currently pinning Alex down,  with a struggle of course, almost throwing him to the side. Jace stumbles, but quickly catches his balance, glaring at those still surrounding them while he takes in just how many people were watching. His white shirt is ruined and dirt marks his cheek bones and mangles his now messy blonde hair.

"Both of you, my office now!" Foreman is red in the faces, breathing heavily, so angry to the point he'd be typically described as to have steam coming from his nose and ears.

Oh boy, they've really done it this time. Oh god, please don't expel them, please don't expel them.

"What the hell was that about?!" I half yell at Jace, who makes his way toward me, at the front of the gang of watchers.

"Why don't you ask your boyfriends?Any one of them will do" he remarks, venom laced in his words as though this, his fight with his best friend was all my fault.

Jace makes his way past me, knocking into me with his broad shoulders, his leather jacket in hand. Never have I ever seen Jace act like this , especially to me. Jace has been nothing but kind to me since the day they found me hidden away at Alex Parker's house, sure they all laughed and joked about me, but they all came around. Even before, when Alex had them help him make my school life a living hell, he didn't act like this.

Alex's Pov:

"Disgraceful!" Foreman drones on. "Once again the two of you let the school down!" The redness of his face has barely gone down in the last ten minutes he's spent telling us what an outrage this was.

I stay slumped in my chair, my head resting in one hand with Jace in the corner of my view, his head tipped back over the chair, eyes closed and hands in lap. Asswipe.

Foreman sighs and retakes his seat at the other side of the desk, leaning forward so his hands are on the wooden table. "Do one of you care to tell me what this little fiasco was about?"

I stay silent. I knew it wasn't a good thing to do, but Ethan freaking O'Donnell gets my blood boiling.

Max is going to hate me...unless  she doesn't  find out.

When neither of us answer, Foreman purses his lips. "Well then, you're officially banned from the school lacrosse team this season" He runs a hand over his face in exhaustion.

"You can't be serious?!" Jace stands up, I follow his actions. In no right mind would Foreman ever stop us from playing lacrosse.

"NO WAY!" I exclaim. Foreman loves winning way too much to make us sit out a whole season.

"You pushed it to far boys, I don't want to have to expel you too, but I will if this continues" he threatens.

This isn't happening.

"You need us!" I yell. Yes he needs us. Not just me, not just Jace or the others, we work as a team. Sure we haven't played in a little while, but the start of the season is right around the corner!

"Sir come on! We" he motions between us. "Haven't missed even a practice is five years!"

"Well you'll have to miss a whole seasons worth now" he seems like he loves the power he has over us. I place my hands behind my head, taking in the news.

"They won't make it without us! We're a team" I try to reason, but Foreman doesn't seem to budge.

"It hardly seems the two of you could work as a team after today does it?!" he replies. I huff. Nothing is a better distraction than going out on that field with a lacrosse stick in hand.

Now what am I supposed to do when I can't think straight and what will distract me of the fact my father hasn't gotten in touch since he left?

Jace and I leave the room, slamming Foreman's office door behind us.

"Thanks a lot man" I say to Jace. Who just looks at me, just as much frustration set in his features as there is in my head.

"You're implying this is my fault?!" He asks incredulously.

"You started on me dude" I pick up my bag and head for the door, leaving Jace behind in halls.

"And why was that huh?!" He calls and it echoes through the almost completely empty school.

Max's POV:

I jump up from the stairs. startled by the sudden outburst of noise when the door swings open revealing Alex Parker, his jaw set in stone, his eyes a storm of whirlwind and rain. His bag was slung over his shoulder and he ran tense fingers through his tousled hair.

"It's been almost an hour!" I rush down the stairs in a hurry to keep up with his long strides. Alex didn't stop by me at the stairs, he barely even glanced at me, just kept on walking.

"What happened in there?" I ask when he doesn't respond. I'm practically jogging to keep up with his pace and my shoulder is already starting to ache with the weight of my school books.

"I'm cut from the team" he says.

"What?" I ask, though I know exactly what he said. I needed to know how he felt, what they were arguing over and did Jace really cheat on Tara?

"Jace and I, we're cut for the whole season" he lets out a deep sigh.

"What was this about?" I ask.

Alex seems to hesitate for a small moment "doesn't matter" he dismisses me with a shrug of his shoulders.

"Jace seemed pretty upset" I pry. He again, just shrugs his shoulders.

"I waited outside the school for almost an hour and I get what? Four syllables? Shrugged shoulders?" He glances at me, and being able to read his facial features more than I have ever been able to before, I can tell getting cut from the team and fighting with his best friend has took more of an effect on him than he cares to let on.

"It isn't any of your business" he tells me and I sigh loudly.

"Fine. Be like that" Then I take off in the opposite direction.

~~~
I sit on my bed, home alone , open my laptop and log into Facebook. Clips of the fight are already posted and cramming my news feed.
I click on the video and the loud cheering fills my bedroom. Comments are doubling each second and the views are already rather big.
"I knew The Jace and Tara split rumor was true!" One girl comments.
"Why are they even fighting?" I scroll through the long listen of comments.
"Why is Ethan involved?" You tell me..
"I heard Jace started because of a guy called Max" okay I'm a girl!
I shut off the computer when my phone buzzes multiple times and Grayson's name lights up my phone along with a mugshot I had taken of him at a party. Not that he doesn't look beautiful in it, he does which irritates the hell out of me.
"Yo" Gray's voice comes loud down the phone line.
"Hey" I reply.
"You're coming to mine tonight right? Everyone is coming" his cool, collected voice comes down the line soothingly.
"Are you forgetting that two of everyone almost ripped each other's heads off earlier?" I mock playfully
"Dude I got it covered, get your ass down here and chill with us"
"Okay okay I'm on my way" I hang up and head downstairs, slipping on my converse and writing my mother a quick note before heading out.
It isn't long before I'm letting myself into Grayson's mansion like house, hollering and following their voices into the main room. So far, only Kyle and Alex are here. Alex, who once again has numerous purple-blue marks blooming on his face.
Only minutes into a new gossipy conversation about Grayson and his new profound interest in the small mousy blonde girl going by the name of Violet Ainsworth when the door opens again and in walks Tara and behind her, Jace Samuels. Jace, who also had purplish bruises rising on his perfect complexion.
"What's he doing here?!" Alex and Jace yell in sync.
"I thought you said you handled this!" I hiss at Grayson who I can't tell if he is amused or actually trying to help.
"I did!" He holds his hands up.
"By telling them the other wasn't coming?!" I ask shaking my head.
"Oh there's more...." Grayson replies, momentarily whining. Oh god, what did he do?
Then the doorbell rings and Grayson is practically running to the door and letting in the unknown guest.
"What am I doing here if you don't mind me asking?" I hear Ethan's polite voice before I even see him and freeze.
"You've got to be kidding me" I shoot Grayson dagger like glares as he quiets the bickering that is already going around the room.
"Okay" Grayson sits. "We're all here, let's solve this thing so we can all go back to being best friends and he can leave" he gestures to Ethan, who in return furrows his brows, clearly feeling like the outsider he is to the group.
"What exactly needs to be solved?" Tara asks, dumbfounded.
"The fight between Jace and Alex" Kyle answers in a duh tone, he is lounged across a one seated, his legs dangling over one of the arms and biting his nail in boredom.
"Fight? You said the fight was between some guy at school?" She turns to Jace, confused. "I didn't think you meant Alex"
"You haven't seen the video yet?" Ethan pulls out his phone helpfully, but Jace throws him a cold glare.
"She doesn't need to see it" he snaps.
"Why? Scared she will hear something you don't want her to?" Alex presses, his eyes expressing his ruthless feelings.
"Alex, don't" Jace warns. The room has gone silent and it suddenly feels like their isn't enough oxygen in the world to get a real breath. The air surrounding us is thick and the tension is radiating off of the two boys.
"She is going to find out anyway, it's all over Facebook" Alex raises an eyebrow. He would never act this way toward his best friend, not unless he felt incredibly threatened.
"Tell me, now" Tara demands. The room is silent, until a sudden cheering is filling the room and all attention is diverted to Ethan who is pointing his phone screen at Tara.
"At least I'm not the type of guy that cheats on my girlfriend!" The recording of Alex spits and then the video shows Jace lunging into action. Tara stands immediately, hurt clear on her face.
"This is true?" She asks and the image she has created of herself as the bad boys girl, with fiery red hair and dressed in all black, was suddenly just that, only an image that had faded quickly.
"Latara..." Jace's voice shakes as he reaches out for her hand to which she pulls away.
"How could you?!" The pain and embarrassment is audible within her voice. It's the type of pain that hurts you as well as them.
"Let me explain!" He calls after her, but the door is already slamming behind her.
Jace's eyes are beginning to redden and I know all he wants to do is follow Tara, but his clenched firsts and eyes clamped shut indicate he isn't going to do that.
"I didn't speak of what you did, you didn't need to ruin my relationship!" Jace is fuming, his body shaking as he directs his yells at Alex, who had called him out on the first place. Alex sits still, as though he is just realizing that he has possibly ruined his friends three year relationship over an argument...though it is Jace's fault for doing it in the first place.
"You need to get your head sorted man!" Jace's finger presses at his temple.
"I don't need to do anything" Alex responds.
"You don't get to do this to people just because you're popular!" Jace, who seems incredibly frustrated, tugs at his messy blonde hair.
"Will someone explain to me what is going on?!" I exclaim, standing up.
Jace hesitates and locks his bloodshot eyes with mine before giving in, indicating to both Ethan and Alex.
"They bet on you" he tells me.
"What?" I frown, "bet on me how?"
"Jace!" Alex stands up but Jace completely blanks him.
"They bet that one of them could bed you on prom night" Jace blurts. I feel the weight of his words hit me hard.
"No" I shake my head, my eyes brimming with tears.
"I'm sorry Max, I tried to stand up for you, but it just cost me my relationship" he shakes his head and heads for the door, closing it behind him.
