Chapter 67
Lily
Lily curled up against Jake on the soft throw blanket draped across his bed, her head resting against his chest. His arm was wrapped around her shoulders, holding her close as his thumb drew lazy circles on her arm. The warm glow of the bedside lamp cast a cozy light over the room, illuminating their relaxed smiles.
Jake tilted his head, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "You're so cute when you're all snuggled up," he murmured, his voice low and affectionate.
Lily chuckled softly, her cheeks warming. She lifted her face to meet his, and he leaned down, catching her lips in a slow, tender kiss. His hand moved to cup her cheek, his touch so gentle it made her heart flutter.
When they broke apart, Jake gazed down at her, his dark eyes warm and full of affection. "Finals are almost over," he said, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. "You excited to go camping after?"
"Yeah," Lily said, her lips curving into a small smile. "It'll be nice to get away for a bit."
Jake grinned. "Good. You deserve the break. You've been working so hard." He kissed her again, softer this time, then pulled back to ask, "What about the party tomorrow night? You coming?"
Lily shook her head, nestling closer to him. "No, I can't. I have my last final to study for."
Jake pouted dramatically, making her laugh. "Aw, come on, babe. Just for a little while?"
She poked his chest playfully. "You know I can't. Finals first, fun later."
"Or," Jake grinned, pushing off the bed and rolling them over so Lily laid underneath him. "Fun now and finals later."
Jake's grin widened as he hovered over her, his hands braced on either side of her head. His eyes held a playful glint, but there was something deeper in his gazeâa flicker of heat that made Lily's heart race. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a kiss that was no longer playful, but slow and deliberate, pouring every ounce of affection and longing into it.
Lily's breath hitched as she kissed him back, her hands instinctively sliding up to rest on his shoulders. His lips moved against hers with a quiet intensity, the weight of his body pressing against hers as he deepened the kiss. Jake's hand trailed lightly down her side, his touch moving Lily's shirt up the sides of her stomach.
As his hand slipped lower, Lily stiffened, her mind snapping back to reality. She gently pressed her hands against his chest, breaking the kiss and turning her face away. "Jake, wait," she murmured, her voice soft but firm.
He froze, his lips hovering close to hers, and pulled back just enough to meet her eyes. "What's wrong?" he asked, his voice low, though the tension in his tone was unmistakable.
"I'm ... not ready yet," Lily said, her words careful, her gaze dropping to avoid his.
Jake let out a quiet sigh, his brow furrowing as he leaned back, giving her space.
"Okay," he said after a moment, though there was a flicker of disappointment in his voice. He sat up, running a hand through his hair. "I get it."
Lily propped herself up on her elbows, watching him carefully. "I'm sorry," she said softly.
Jake shook his head and forced a small smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Don't be sorry. I just... I guess I thought maybe we were ready by now."
Lily sat up fully, reaching for his hand and squeezing it gently. "We will be," she said, offering him a reassuring smile. "Just not yet."
Jake studied her for a moment, then exhaled, his shoulders relaxing. "Alright," he said with a small nod, his smile softening. "Whenever you're ready."
Lily smiled in return, grateful for his understanding, even if she could still see the faint shadow of disappointment lingering in his expression.

Theo and Daphne
The gravel road crunched beneath the tires of Theo's SUV as he guided it through the sprawling entrance of his grandfather's massive ranch. A set of tall, wrought-iron gates swung open as they approached, flanked by towering oaks that lined the driveway. Daphne leaned forward in her seat, her eyes wide as she took in the breathtaking view. The estate stretched endlessly in every direction, with vibrant green pastures dotted with grazing horses and a massive barn glinting in the late afternoon sunlight.
The main house came into view, a stately structure with whitewashed walls and a wraparound porch adorned with hanging flower baskets. Theo's fingers tightened slightly on the wheel as he glanced at Daphne, who was mesmerized by the picturesque scene.
"Wow," Daphne breathed, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "This place looks like something out of a movie."
Theo's lips curled into a proud smile. "Growing up, if we weren't in Del Mare, we were here. Lily loves the horses and grandpa used to take us all hunting."
Daphne laughed they pulled to a stop in front of the house. The door swung open, and Richard appeared on the porch. Though his age showed in the silver streaks of his hair and the lines etched on his face, his tall, commanding presence exuded a timeless energy. Beside him stood his new wife, Edna, a petite woman with warm eyes and a welcoming smile. She wore a warm red coat, her hand resting lightly on Richard's arm.
Theo stepped out of the car first, circling around to open Daphne's door. She climbed out carefully, brushing off her jeans and straightening her sweater as her nerves prickled under the weight of the grandeur. Theo placed a steadying hand on the small of her back, leaning close as he whispered, "Relax, you're going to charm them."
Daphne shot him a soft smile, though her pulse quickened as Richard descended the steps, his sharp eyes lighting up at the sight of Theo.
"Theodore, about time!" Richard's voice boomed with warmth, his arms outstretched. He clasped Theo in a firm, fatherly hug before pulling back to look him over. "It's good to see you."
"It's good to be here, Grandpa." Theo's tone softened, a hint of boyish affection slipping through. Then he turned, placing a hand on Daphne's shoulder as he said, "This is Daphne."
Richard's gaze shifted to Daphne, his expression softening into a kind smile. "So, this is the young lady I've been hearing about." He extended a hand, and Daphne shook it, her nerves easing at his gentle grip.
"It's so nice to meet you," she said, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest.
"It's wonderful to meet you too," he insisted, then turned to Edna, who stepped forward with an eager smile. "And this lovely woman here is Edna."
"Oh, it's wonderful to meet you, dear," Edna said warmly, pulling Daphne into a brief hug. "We've been looking forward to having you here."
"I've heard so much about you two," Daphne replied, genuinely touched by their welcome.
"I'm sure," Edna turned toward Theo. "You didn't tell us you're dating Miss America? Now I see why you're so busy lately."
Theo laughed as he hugged Edna and kissed her cheeks.
"She keeps me on my toes," Theo said.
"I bet," Enda nodded, giving Daphne a small wink. "Come along now. It's chilly out here."
"Do you like game meat, Daphne," Richard asked, holding out his arm to usher her into the house.
"Yes, sir," Daphne nodded, taking his arm.
As the group made their way inside, Theo watched the scene unfold with quiet pride. Seeing his grandfather and Edna welcome Daphne so warmly filled him with a sense of satisfaction. He silently followed her into the house.
"Well," Richard said with a grin, clapping his hands together. "We've got dinner waiting inside. Edna made her famous pot roast, and I want to hear all about what you two have been up to."
Daphne glanced up at Theo, her eyes sparkling. He gave her a subtle wink, his chest swelling with pride as he led her into the heart of the ranch he had always cherished, the place where he now proudly introduced her as someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

Lily
Lily stood in front of her mirror, her room a whirlwind of clothes and makeup scattered across every surface. She tugged on a fitted black top and adjusted the hem of her skirt, her heart racing with anticipation. She wanted everything to be perfect. Her hair was half-curled, a few loose strands framing her face as she swiped on her favorite lip gloss, checking her reflection for the millionth time.
"Not bad, Miss Silvano," Lily said to herself in the mirror as she adjusted her breasts in her shirt.
Grabbing her phone, she called out to Wendy, who was sitting cross-legged on Lily's bed with a textbook balanced on her knees.
"You sure you don't want to come with me?" Lily asked, her voice tinged with both hope and nervousness.
Wendy didn't even look up from her notes. "Can't," she said, scribbling furiously. "I have two finals on Monday, and I'm already behind."
Lily sighed, turning back to the mirror as she slipped on her earrings. "Alexa said she was busy too. I feel so awkward going alone."
Wendy glanced up briefly, raising an eyebrow. "You're not going alone, Lady Bug. You're going to see your boyfriend. Big difference."
The reminder seemed to light something in Lily's chest. She paused, a small smile tugging at her lips as she imagined Jake's reaction. He'd be so happy to see her, completely surprised. The thought made her stomach flutter with excitement.
"You're right," she said, her voice more confident now. "He's going to be so happy."
Wendy smirked, returning her attention to her notes. "Exactly. Go make his night."
Grinning, Lily grabbed her keys and her purse, practically bouncing on her feet as she headed for the door. The thought of Jake's surprised smile fueled her excitement, and suddenly, the awkwardness she'd felt about going alone didn't matter anymore. This was for himâand she couldn't wait to see his face when she walked in.
Lily gripped the steering wheel tightly as she drove, her heart thudding in time with the upbeat pop song playing faintly from the car speakers. The city lights blurred past her window, but her thoughts were fixed on Jake. She tapped her fingers nervously against the wheel, stealing a glance at her reflection in the rearview mirror. She smoothed her hair one last time and reminded herself to breathe.
When she pulled up outside the frat house, the party was already in full swing. The bass of the music reverberated in the air, spilling out into the street along with flashes of multicolored lights from the windows. Lily took a deep breath, stepped out of her car and grabbed her purse as she made her way to the door.
Inside, the noise was deafening. The house was packed with people, bodies swaying to the music under dim, pulsing lights. The faint smell of beer and perfume hung in the air, and laughter echoed from all directions. Lily weaved her way through the crowd, her eyes scanning the room for Jake. She spotted one of his housemates leaning against the wall, a red Solo cup in hand.
"Hey, have you seen Jake?" she asked, raising her voice to be heard over the music.
He quickly pointed toward the backyard. "Yeah, he's out there."
"Thanks," Lily said, her excitement sparking again as she made her way toward the sliding glass door.
As she stepped outside, the sight before her stopped her in her tracks. Jake was on the patio, spinning and laughing with Alexa.
Lily shifted uncomfortably on her feet, her gaze flicked between Jake and Alexa. A wave of unease rolled over her, tightening her chest and making her heart ache in a way she hadn't expected.
Alexa was dressed in a sleek, form-fitting red dress that hugged every curve. Her long hair shimmered under the string lights, and her makeup was flawless, her lips a bold crimson.
Lily glanced down at her own outfitâher black top and simple skirt that suddenly felt far too plain. Her figure, which she'd never thought much of before, now seemed inadequate in comparison. Alexa exuded a confidence and sexiness that Lily couldn't imagine pulling off.
Lily's chest tightened as she stood there, frozen, watching Jake laugh with Alexa. Her arms wrapping around herself as insecurity crept in, her earlier excitement fleeting.
This was Alexa, one of her closest friends. They had spent countless nights talking about everythingâschool, boys, dreams for the future. Alexa was the one who made Lily laugh when she needed it most, the one who always encouraged her to be more confident in herself. So why, standing here now, did Lily feel so small?
She bit her lip, glancing down at her outfit again. It wasn't like Alexa had done anything wrong; she always dressed boldly, carried herself with ease, and turned heads wherever she went. That was just Alexaâbeautiful, confident, magnetic.
Lily had never cared before. She'd never compared herself to Alexa, never felt this knot of jealousy and doubt tighten in her stomach.
But now, watching the way Jake looked at Alexaâlaughing at something she said, his hand briefly brushing hersâLily couldn't help but shift uncomfortably once more.
Was she too plain? Too simple?
The thought stung, and she hated herself for even thinking it. This was Alexa, her best friend, not a rival.
And Jake was her boyfriend, the guy who told her she was beautiful, who kissed her like she was the only girl in the world.
Lily swallowed hard, pushing aside all her thoughts and stepped forward into the light.
"Lily!"
Alexa was the first to sopt her. She threw her ams up and shouted with glee.
"Surprise!" Lily chuckled, her eyes moving from Alexa to Jake.
"Hey," Jake laughed, taking a step back from Alexa. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to surprise you," Lily smiled, walking up to him and pushing to her tippy toes to plant a kiss on his lips. She was greeted by the smell of alcohol and Jake's warm hands on her waist.
"Yay! I'm so happy you're here!" Alexa wrapped her arm around Lily from the back and hugged her tightly. "Now the party can start."
"I thought you said you were busy," Lily looked back at her friend as she turned to give Alexa a proper hug.
"I was," Alexa sighed and shook her head. "But my plans cancled and I heard about the party so I decided to drop by last minute. What about you? I thought you were studying for your finals."
"I finished early," Lily looked toward Jake again.
Jake's grin widened, and he pulled Lily closer, his arms wrapping securely around her waist. "You finished early just to come surprise me? I must be the luckiest guy alive."
Lily felt her cheeks flush at his words, her earlier doubts starting to ease. Jake's attention was fully on her now, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners as he looked at her like she was the only person in the room.
"I wanted to see you," she admitted softly, her voice nearly drowned out by the music.
Jake leaned down, brushing his lips against hers again, this time slower and more deliberate. When he pulled back, he was grinning. "Best surprise ever."
Lily felt a smile tug at her lips, and the weight in her chest began to lift. She could feel Alexa's eyes on them and when she turned to glance at her, Alexa was already backing away with a teasing wink.
"Okay, lovebirds, I'm out," Alexa said, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she pointed toward the dance floor. "I see someone who owes me a dance."
"Have fun!" Lily called after her, and Alexa shot her a thumbs-up before disappearing into the crowd, her figure blending with the throng of dancers.
With Alexa gone, Lily felt a pang of guilt for having doubted her friend. This was Alexaâher loud, fun, and carefree best friend who would never intentionally make her feel less than. Lily exhaled slowly, letting the insecurity melt away as she refocused on Jake.
He was watching her with a soft smile, his hands still resting on her hips. "You okay?" he asked gently, leaning closer so she could hear him over the music.
Lily nodded, her smile growing more confident. "Yeah, I'm good."
Jake kissed her forehead and then tugged her toward the backyard couch. As they settled into the seat, Jake's arm draped around her shoulder and he leaned back on the couch, pulling Lily closer against his side. The music thumped faintly in the background, and the cool night air brushed against their skin. He glanced down at her and grinned. "Want me to grab you a drink? I think there's still some beer inside."
Lily wrinkled her nose and shook her head. "You know I'm underage, right?"
Jake chuckled, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear. "It's fine. Everyone here is drinking. No one's gonna care."
She smiled faintly but shook her head again. "No, thanks. I'm also driving back."
Jake tilted his head, studying her for a moment, before his grin returned. "Just stay here with me tonight. You don't have to drive. Problem solved."
Lily's chest tightened at the suggestion. The idea of staying overnight in a frat house filled with drunk, rowdy guys wasn't remotely appealing. She shifted uncomfortably, glancing toward the house where laughter and shouting echoed from inside.
"Yeah... no," she said, laughing softly to lighten the mood. "I'm good. I'll just head home when I'm ready."
Jake frowned slightly, as though disappointed, but he nodded. "Alright, alright. You're no fun, though," he teased, giving her side a playful squeeze.
Lily forced a small laugh, but inside she felt a flicker of unease. She didn't want to ruin the night, but she also wasn't going to compromise her comfort or her judgment.
Jake sighed and leaned back into the couch, pulling her closer again. "Fine, Miss Responsible. Leave me alone to drink by myself," he teased with a pout.
Lily rolled her eyes with a smile, resting her head on his shoulder. "I think you'll survive."
Jake laughed and kissed the top of her head, and for a moment, the tension dissipated. But in the back of Lily's mind, she couldn't help but feel a small tug of discomfort lingering, no matter how hard she tried to ignore it.
"I like your skirt," Jake said, his fingers brushing the hem of the fabric where it laid on her thighs.
"Thank you," Lily blushed, feeling his fingers tracing lazy circles on her skin.
"You look so beautiful, baby," Jake whispered, kissing her ear. "And you smell even better."
"Hmm," Lily laughed. "And you smell like beer."
"I only had a few," Jake laughed.
"Good thing you're not going anywhere tonight," Lily's thighs squeezed slightly as Jake's hand slowly slippe din between them.
"What?" Jake grinned, his gaze teasing as Lily's eyes flickered toward him.
"What are you doing?" Lily blushed, her eyes looking around at the people in the yard.
"Relax, babe," Jake sighed once again, burying his face in her hair and inhaling her scent. "No one's looking."
"Jake," Lily pulled back slightly and placed her hand on his chest.
"Do you want to go somewhere else?" Jake asked. "My room is empty."
Jake's question hung in the air, and Lily hesitated, her pulse quickening. She glanced around the backyard, the sounds of laughter and music blending into a hazy backdrop. She wasn't sure if she wanted to be alone with him upstairs, but the way he was looking at herâso full of affection and warmthâmade her feel safe, despite her nerves.
"Um..." she started, chewing on her bottom lip.
Jake gently cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing across her skin. "We don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with. I just want to be alone with you, that's all."
His words eased some of her hesitation, and she nodded slowly. "Okay."
Jake's face lit up with a soft smile as he took her hand and helped her up from the couch. "Come on," he said, leading her inside and up the staircase.
The house was quieter on the upper floor, the pounding bass muted behind closed doors. Jake pushed open the door to his room and turned to her before he closed the door, his smile still warm.
"See? Just us," he said softly, stepping closer to her.
Lily offered a small, nervous laugh, her eyes darting around the room before landing back on him.
"Better," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lily's nerves and excitement tangled together in a whirlwind of unfamiliar sensations. Her heart raced as Jake cupped her face, his hands warm and steady, grounding her in the moment. When his lips met hers, it was soft at firstâtentative, almost gentleâbut the kiss deepened quickly, growing hungrier as his arms circled her waist and pulled her closer.
She felt herself responding instinctively, her fingers gripping his shoulders for balance as the intensity between them rose. Jake guided her backward with ease until her knees hit the edge of the bed, sending a shiver up her spine.
"It's fine, right?" Jake murmured, his voice low and rough with emotion.
"Yes," Lily whispered, her cheeks flushing. His fingers pressed into her waist, firm but not forceful, igniting a warmth in her that made her pulse quicken.
"Stop me whenever you want," Jake assured her, his eyes searching hers for a moment before he lowered her gently onto the bed.
Lily nodded, unable to find her voice as she gazed up at him. The weight of his presence was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, a new kind of closeness she'd never experienced before. She leaned up to meet his lips again, kissing him with more confidence as her body responded to the heat between them.
Her stomach fluttered with nervous energy every time he shifted closer, the pressure of his body against hers both thrilling and overwhelming. Jake smiled against her lips, his free hand finding a path between them, and Lily gasped softly as his fingers slipped under her shirt.
Her breathing hitched as his warm hand brushed against her skin, exploring her chest with a careful touch that sent sparks through her nerves. She squeezed her thighs together instinctively, a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty blooming within her.
Jake pulled back slightly, his lips hovering over hers, his breath warm against her face. "You're okay?" he asked, his voice gentle but edged with the tension he was clearly holding back.
"Yes," Lily managed to whisper, though her voice trembled.
Jake's lips found hers again, his hand continuing its exploration with a slow, deliberate touch. Lily couldn't help but gasp softly, her body arching slightly toward him as she gave in to the new sensations flooding her senses. Her mind was a blur of thoughts, but one thing was clearâshe was stepping into something entirely new, and despite the nerves, it felt electric. She wasn't ready to go all the way, but she was ready to take the first step.
Lily and Jake were lost in the moment, their kisses growing deeper and more intense, when a loud, frantic knock broke through the haze. The sound was startling, jarring Lily out of her nervous excitement and making Jake pull back abruptly.
"Lily!" Alexa's voice called out from the other side of the door, high-pitched and urgent. "It's me! Open up!"
Jake sighed, sitting back as he glanced at the door, clearly annoyed at the interruption. "What the hell?" he muttered under his breath.
Lily sat up quickly, smoothing her shirt and running a hand through her hair, her heart still pounding from the adrenaline of their kiss.
"Alexa?" she called, her voice uncertain.
"I'm not feeling well," Alexa replied, her tone almost frantic as she knocked again. "Lily, can you drive me home? Please?"
Lily exchanged a look with Jake, whose brows furrowed in frustration. "You just got here," he said softly to her, his hand resting on her knee.
Lily hesitated, biting her lip. She could barely think straight with Alexa pounding on the door.
With a heavy sigh, Jake rose from the bed and opened the door open.
"I'm so sorry, Lil," Alexa said, walking into the room and running a hand through her hair. "Can you please give me a ride home?"
"Alexa," Lily frowned. "I just got there...."
"I know, I know. I'm sorry," Alexa replied quickly. "Everyone's been drinking. Please, Lily, I don't feel good."
The urgency in Alexa's voice made Lily's stomach twist with guilt, even as she felt a pang of disappointment. She turned back to Jake, who was frowning but stayed quiet, clearly waiting to see what she'd do.
"Okay, okay," Lily finally said, standing up and grabbing her bag from the floor. "Just give me a second."
Jake groaned. "Seriously? She can't wait an hour?"
"Jake, she doesn't feel well," Lily said, trying to sound firm even though she felt torn. "I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. I promise."
"Sure," he muttered, his jaw tightening slightly as he stood near the door.
Alexa stared at the pair, clutching her arms and looking pale under the dim hallway light.
"Thank you," she said quickly, her eyes darting to Jake before back to Lily.
Lily sighed, giving Jake an apologetic glance before following Alexa out of the room and down the stairs. The music from the party thumped loudly, and the flashing lights seemed even harsher as they made their way through the crowd.
Once they reached Lily's car, Alexa slumped into the passenger seat with a shaky breath.
"Thank you. I really appreciate it," she murmured.
Lily glanced at her friend as she started the engine, her disappointment from leaving the party still lingering.
"Are you okay?" She asked. "How are you feeling?"
"I... I'm fine. I just needed to get out of there," Alexa said quietly, avoiding Lily's gaze.
Lily didn't push further, though a part of her couldn't shake the odd feeling in her chest. As she drove away from the frat house, the lingering energy from her time with Jake was slowly replaced by confusion and concern for Alexa.
As they drove away from the party, the tension in the car gradually dissipated. Alexa, who had been sitting quietly with her head against the window, let out a soft sigh. She straightened in her seat, the pale, shaky demeanor she'd shown earlier starting to fade.
"Okay," Alexa said suddenly, breaking the silence. "I feel way better now. Fresh air really does wonders."
Lily glanced at her, skeptical. "You looked like you were about to pass out back there."
Alexa waved a hand dismissively, a small smile creeping onto her face. "I think it was just the crowd and the heat. Too much going on. Anyway..." She turned to Lily with a raised eyebrow, her tone growing lighter. "What exactly were you and Jake doing in his room?"
Lily's cheeks flushed instantly, her hands gripping the steering wheel tighter. "We were just... talking."
"Uh-huh." Alexa's grin widened, leaning her head against the seat to face Lily. "Talking? Come on, Lily, I saw the way you two looked at each other. Spill."
Lily bit her lip, debating how much to share. "It wasn't a big deal," she said softly. "We were just, you know... kissing and.....other things."
"Other things?" Alexa's arched her brow. "Lily, you've been dating this guy for what, like a few weeks?"
"A few month," Lily corrected quietly.
"Exactly my point." Alexa shifted in her seat to face Lily more fully. "I'm not trying to tell you what to do or anything, but don't you think you're moving a little fast? I mean, Jake's a nice guy, but do you really know him yet?"
Lily frowned, her stomach tightening. "It's not like we did anything serious. And Jake's been really sweet to me."
"I'm sure he has," Alexa said. "But you don't have to rush into... everything just because he's being sweet. Guys like Jake, well... let's just say they've probably had more experience than you. And I don't want to see you get hurt if things don't go the way you're hoping."
Lily's cheeks flushed again, a mixture of embarrassment and defensiveness bubbling up. "I know what I'm doing," she said, though her voice wavered slightly.
"I'm not saying you don't," Alexa said quickly, reaching over to touch Lily's arm. "I just... I care about you, okay? I don't want you to feel like you have to do something just to keep him happy."
Lily glanced at Alexa, her heart softening at the genuine concern in her friend's eyes. "I appreciate it," she murmured, though she wasn't sure how to feel about the conversation.
"Good," Alexa said, leaning back with a satisfied smile. "Now, let's forget about Jake for a minute and talk about me. Because I am never going to another frat party without a backup plan for escape."
Lily couldn't help but laugh at that, the awkwardness in the air finally easing as Alexa launched into a dramatic recount of her brief time at the party. But as the conversation shifted, Lily couldn't quite shake the lingering weight of Alexa's words.
Lily pulled up in front of Alexa's house, the headlights briefly illuminating the familiar stone pathway leading to the front door. Alexa unbuckled her seatbelt and stretched, letting out a dramatic sigh.
"Thank you, my love," Alexa said, flashing her a tired smile.
"No problem. Text me if you need anything," Lily replied, watching as her friend grabbed her purse.
"I hope you're not going back to the party," Alexa said. "They boys were getting crazy. I'm sure they're all drunk out of their minds right now. And you know how a frat house gets when there are drinks flowing."
Lily nodded slowly, "Yeah....I know."
"Good night," Alexa leaned over and gave her a brief hug and climbed out of the car.. "Get home safe."
As she disappeared into the house, Lily lingered for a moment, her hands resting lightly on the steering wheel. The sound of faint clanging caught her attention, drawing her gaze to the side of the house. A warm glow spilled out of the open garage, where someone was bent over an old car, tools scattered across the workbench nearby.
Lily squinted through the dim light, the silhouette of the figure sharpening into clarity as she focused. Gabriel.
His broad shoulders flexed under the soft, golden glow of the garage light, the muscles in his arms shifting as he tightened something under the hood of the car. A faint clanging echoed again as he set a tool down, his movements fluid and precise, almost mesmerizing. The old carâa cherry-red vintage Mustangâlooked like it hadn't run in decades, its hood propped open as though waiting for revival.
Lily's fingers gripped the steering wheel tighter as a wave of curiosity tugged at her. She'd never seen him like thisâfocused, quiet, entirely in his own world. The image of him hunched over the car felt different from the Gabriel she'd known, his usual sharp wit replaced by an almost meditative concentration. She wondered what was wrong with the car, why he was here this late, and why it mattered so much to him.
But just as the thought crossed her mind, Gabriel straightened, a grease-streaked rag in his hand. His head turned slightly, as if he could feel her eyes on him. Their gazes locked. For a second, neither of them moved.
Lily's heart thudded heavily in her chest, but she forced herself to stay still, her expression carefully blank. She wasn't sure if it was the dim light or the shadows, but something about the intensity in his eyes unsettled her.
Gabriel's gaze didn't waver, his dark eyes steady and unrelenting as he wiped his hands on the rag. For a moment, Lily thought he might look away, dismiss her presence entirelyâbut instead, he raised a hand and motioned for her to come closer. It was a subtle, deliberate gesture, his fingers curling in a way that felt almost impossible to ignore. He didn't call out. He just smiled and stood there, waiting, his expression unreadable.
Lily's heart raced, her chest tight as if the weight of his attention was something physical, pressing down on her. Her fingers trembled slightly against the steering wheel. Why couldn't he just go back to ignoring her? Why did he always have this way of drawing her in, even without saying a word? The idea of stepping out and facing him felt suffocating, like she'd be walking into a trap she couldn't escape.
The intensity of his stare and the casual ease of his gesture unsettled her in ways she didn't want to think about. She didn't want to care about the car, about why he was there, or about him. She didn't want to feel the pull toward him that she always seemed to, the inexplicable urge to cross the distance between them even when she knew she shouldn't.
Grinding her teeth, she slammed the gear into drive and turned onto the main road. The streetlights flashed rhythmically across the windshield, but her mind was stuck in the golden haze of the garage, Gabriel's motion replaying in her head like a loop she couldn't shut off.
"Damn it," she muttered, her voice tight with frustration. She shook her head, as if the motion could somehow dislodge the thoughts of him that clung stubbornly to her mind.
She hit the gas, speeding up as if she could outrun the way her skin prickled with awareness, the way her pulse fluttered unsteadily. She hated that he still got to her, that a single look from him could unravel the all the work she put into getting over him.
As the glow of the garage disappeared in her rearview mirror, Lily clenched her jaw and forced herself to focus on the road ahead. Gabriel was behind her now, and that was exactly where he needed to stay.

Theo and Daphne
The golden light of the late afternoon spilled over the weathered wood and casted long shadows across the dusty ground as Theo led Daphne to the stables. Daphne clutched her arms around herself, her excitement tempered by the nervous energy that made her heart race. Horses were beautiful creatures, but they were huge.
Theo glanced at her with a reassuring smile as he guided a calm, chestnut mare out of the stall. "This is Buttercup," he said, patting the horse's neck. "Lily's favorite. She's gentle and patientâperfect for a beginner."
Daphne stepped closer, biting her lip as her eyes darted between Theo and Buttercup. "She's...big," she whispered, her voice trembling with both awe and anxiety.
"She's not so bad," Theo teased, his deep voice warm. "You'll be fine. Trust me."
Daphne gave him a skeptical look. "You know that's what people say right before disaster happens, right?"
Theo chuckled, the sound filled the stable. He reached out to take her hand, guiding it to Buttercup's velvety nose. "Start with this. Let her get used to you."
Daphne hesitated but finally let her palm rest against Buttercup's snout. Buttercup exhaled softly, her breath warm and comforting against Daphne's skin. A smile tugged at Daphne's lips. "She's so soft," she murmured.
Theo's eyes softened as he watched her, a faint smile playing at his own lips. "See? You're already bonding. The hardest part is over."
"That's not true," Daphne shot back, her smile fading as she glanced nervously at the saddle. "The hardest part is me getting up there without falling off and dying."
"You're not going to die, drama queen," Theo rolle dhis eyes. "I'll help you. Come on."
He held the stirrup steady and offered his other hand to her. "Step up here, swing your leg over, and sit. Buttercup won't move until I say so."
Daphne inhaled deeply, summoning all the courage she had. With Theo's steady hand guiding her, she placed her foot in the stirrup and awkwardly hoisted herself onto Buttercup's back. Theo caught her waist to help her balance, his hands firm and reassuring.
She let out a surprised laugh once she was seated, gripping the reins with white-knuckled determination. "I'm on a horse! I'm actually on a horse!"
Theo grinned up at her. "Told you you'd be fine. Now, sit up straight, keep your heels down, and relax. Buttercup will feel it if you're tense."
Daphne nodded, but relaxing was easier said than done. Her back was stiff, and her grip on the reins was so tight her fingers ached.
"Relax, he says," she muttered, more to herself than Theo. "Sure, no problem. Just riding a giant animal with a mind of its own. Totally chill."
Theo smirked and stepped beside Buttercup, one hand on the saddle and the other on Daphne's knee. "You're overthinking it. Trust Buttercupâand trust me. I've got you."
His words, steady and certain, eased her nerves. Slowly, she exhaled, loosening her grip on the reins. Buttercup shifted slightly, and Daphne squeaked, but Theo was right there, his steadying presence grounding her.
"There you go," Theo encouraged, his tone gentle. "Now, give her a little nudge with your heels. Not too hard. She'll start walking."
Daphne hesitated but did as he said. Buttercup moved forward in a slow, even gait, and Daphne gasped, her hands clutching the reins again. "She's moving! Theodore, she's moving! Oh my gosh!"
Theo walked alongside the mare, chuckling. "You're doing great, baby. Just keep breathing. You've got this."
After a few minutes of slow, cautious walking, Daphne started to smile again. The wind in her hair and the rhythm of Buttercup's steps felt almost magical.
"This is...actually kind of amazing," she admitted, her earlier fear melting into exhilaration.
"You're a natural," Theo said with a grin.
"Let's not get carried away," Daphne shot back, though she couldn't stop smiling. "But thanks."
Theo's expression softened, and he patted Buttercup's neck. "Anytime, princess. You're worth it."

Lily
Lily sat cross-legged on a checkered blanket spread over the soft grass of the campus lawn, the midday sun casting a warm, golden glow over the scene. Her light sundress fluttered slightly in the breeze as she leaned forward to hand Jake a piece of starwberry from the small wicker basket beside her.
Jake smiled, his eyes crinkling behind his glasses as he took it, "Thank you, baby."
"I have more," Lily said, settling down beside him and placing her head on his lap. "And I also have thin mints."
The smile on Jake's face widened, "How did you know I like thin mints?"
"On our first date you ordered mint chocolate chip ice cream," Lily smiled, feeling proud of herself. "And I think you also looked relieved when I said I didn't want any."
"I don't share my ice cream," Jake teased.
"I don't want your ice cream," Lily's nose scrunched up. "Tootpaste is not a flavor."
Jake threw his head back and laughed, the sound filling the warm air around them. Lily felt the corners of her mouth lifting in a genuine smile. The lightness of the moment wrapped around her like the sun's warmth, and she gently poked his side.
"How can you eat that?" She teased.
Jake grinned, brushing a hand through his hair as he looked down at her, his free hand lazily resting on her arm. "Don't worry, I'll get you used to it."
"Please, no," Lily chuckled. "Pick a normal flavor."
Jake laughed again, his body relaxing as he gently stroked her hair. But just as Lily tilted her head up to catch his gaze, a familiar pull made her glance across the lawn.
Gabriel was walking past the edge of the green. His broad shoulders moved with an effortless confidence, and his gaze was locked onto her like a tether she couldn't shake. The sun caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the faint frown that tugged at the corner of his lips as he kept his eyes on her. It wasn't a passing glanceâit was a stare, deliberate and unwavering.
For a moment, Lily's breath hitched, and her chest tightened in the way it always used to when Gabriel was near. Memories flashed in fragmentsâhis teasing grin, the way his voice dipped low when he whispered her name. It would have been so easy to get caught in the weight of his stare, to wonder what he was thinking or why he hadn't looked away.
But she wasn't that girl anymore.
Lily blinked, her hand brushing against Jake's arm as she turned her face back to him, her movements deliberate.
"So," she said, her voice bright and steady as if nothing had happened, "what's the weirdest ice cream flavor you've ever tried?"
Jake tilted his head and pondered her question for a few second before answering with a smile. "Bacon-flavored. I tried it on a dare. Big mistake."
Lily's laugh came easily, light and natural. "Bacon? Why would anyone think that's a good idea?"
Jake shook his head, laughing along with her. "Trust me, I asked the same thing. It was awful."
Her hand settled against Jake's, her focus narrowing in on him, on the easy, genuine way he laughed and the way his eyes lit up as he spoke. Gabriel's presence faded into the background, a shadow in the periphery she refused to acknowledge.
Lily shifted slightly, resting her head more comfortably against Jake's lap. "I guess I'll have to protect you from bad dessert decisions too," she said, her tone teasing but warm.
"Looks like you're stuck with me, then," Jake replied, his grin softening into something quieter, more sincere.
"Good," she said, her fingers brushing lightly against his. "Because you're exactly where I want to be."
Even as Gabriel continued to walk the lawn, she didn't spare him another glance. Her world was right here on the blanket, with Jake's laughter, his kindness, and the safe, steady rhythm of something promising and good.

Theo and Daphne
The evening sunlight filtered through the cracks in the stable walls, casting golden streaks across the dusty floor. Daphne stood near Buttercup, carefully brushing the mare's coat with long, deliberate strokes, her brow furrowed in concentration. Beside her, Edna worked on a dapple-gray gelding, chatting animatedly with Daphne about the importance of proper grooming. The two women, one young and full of quiet determination, the other wise and fiery, looked completely at ease together in the warm, rustic setting.
From the far side of the stable, Theo leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, his sharp eyes fixed on Daphne. Next to him, Richard stood with his hands in his pockets, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he watched the scene unfold.
"She's a good girl," Richard said, breaking the comfortable silence between them. His voice was gruff but kind, carrying the weight of a man who'd seen and lived through more than he cared to share. "Not many would take the time to muck around in a stable like this, let alone enjoy it."
Theo smirked faintly, his gaze never leaving Daphne as she tilted her head to listen to Edna's instructions. A lock of her hair had come loose from her ponytail, and she absentmindedly tucked it behind her ear, her smile soft and genuine as she laughed at something Edna said.
"She's more than a good girl," Theo replied, his voice low and thoughtful. "She's going to be my wife."
Richard turned his head slightly, studying his grandson. Theo wasn't one for big declarations or wearing his heart on his sleeve, but the way he looked at Daphneâthe quiet intensity in his eyesâspoke volumes.
"I knew you brought her here for a reason," Richard said knowingly.
Theo laughed nervously. Then he exhaled, pushing off the wall and straightening his posture.
"I did," he admitted, his voice steady. "I wanted you and Edna to meet her...because I'm planning to propose."
Richard raised his eyebrows, clearly surprised, but there was no mistaking the pride that softened his expression.
"Well, I'll be damned," he said with a chuckle. "Never thought I'd see the day."
Theo gave him a sidelong look, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"Don't get smart with me, boy," Richard shot back, but his tone was warm. He placed a hand on Theo's shoulder, squeezing it lightly. "It's a big step. You sure about her?"
Theo glanced back toward Daphne. She was laughing now, her head tilted back as Edna gestured dramatically with a curry comb in her hand. Daphne's laugh was light and free, and it echoed in Theo's chest, making something inside him feel rooted and steady.
"Yes, sir," Theo said simply.
Richard nodded, his weathered face thoughtful. "Then you've got my blessing. But you don't need it, son. If she makes you happy, that's all that matters."
Theo gave a small nod of gratitude, his lips quirking into a rare, genuine smile. "Thanks, grandpa."
"Just like your dad," Richard teased, his voice carrying a playful edge.
