âYou are not mine, and I have never been entitled to claim you, Zi Wei. My husband is the emperor, is Chu Yihan. In this life, I can only stay by his side until old age. You are my most loyal guard, but I have always hoped that you could have a life of your own.â
Su Yingxueâs eyes shimmered softly as she took Zi Wei from the Silver Moon Pavilion. She had sworn to cure him, to let him live a safe and joyous life like a normal person, forgetting those days of licking blood off the knifeâs edge.
Zi Wei shook his head, âI only want to protect you.â
Protect her forever.
âThatâs not possible.â
Su Yingxue patiently taught him, âYou have already married Yue Lian; you are her husband. The person you should protect in this lifetime is only her.â
âNo, not her, you.â
Zi Wei was very stubborn.
He wasnât one to speak grand principles, nor could he even express his own feelings. He could only use his eyes, stubbornly gazing at Su Yingxue.
He wouldnât leave her, not going anywhere.
âZi Wei,â Su Yingxueâs voice lowered, becoming much more serious, âAre you not listening to me anymore?â
âNo, I am listening.â
Zi Wei gazed earnestly at her. He would listen to anything she said, even if it meant his death right then and there.
âWell then, I give you one final command that you must obey, to the letter.â
âOkay.â Zi Wei nodded, listening intently.
âFrom now, go back to Yue Lianâs side, be a good husband, stay by her side without leaving, have children with her, grow old together, accompany each other in life and death, and then, never come to see me again.â
Su Yingxue spoke slowly, afraid he might miss a single word.
Never come to see her again.
âWhy?â Zi Weiâs gaze shattered, like a piece of pure glass thrown onto the cold hard ground, broken and bleeding.
Why did she so decisively not want him anymore?
âThere is no why! Zi Wei, follow my command! Now, leave immediately!â
Su Yingxue pointed behind him, towards that endless street.
Led him to find where he belonged.
Zi Wei shook his head. He didnât want to go, didnât want to leave, and didnât want to never see her again.
âGo!â Su Yingxue uttered the most ruthless words she had ever said to him.
Zi Wei remained silent, but two tears trickled down from his eyes, tinted with a hint of purple.
His lips moved stiffly, âCan Iâ¦â not be driven away?
He wouldnât disturb her.
She is the empress, the wife of Chu Yihan, itâs none of his business.
He just wanted to be her guard, in the darkest corner, protecting her.
Even if she would not need him for a long, long time, he would come out to fight for her, protect her, protect her children whenever she needed!
âYou cannot! Zi Wei, did you clearly hear my command?â
Su Yingxueâs heart also felt heavy; she had never seen Zi Wei shed tears before.
People who licked blood from knives did not cry tears of blood.
Zi Weiâs body trembled, and he turned around mechanically, slowly moving his feet which felt as if they had been filled with lead. Each step away from Su Yingxue felt like a knife slicing his own heart.
âZi Wei!â
Su Yingxue called out.
Zi Weiâs eyes brightened, thinking she had changed her mind.
He immediately turned around, only to hear Su Yingxue say, âYou should have a son and a daughter with Yue Lian, and live a happy life!â
Zi Wei halted his movements.
He did not turn around again, but moved slowly, carefully listening to the fading footsteps of Su Yingxue.
She took a step, two steps, three steps⦠reached the entrance of the secret passage, then closed it and continued inward.
He could no longer hear her footsteps.
Turning around, he saw the secret passage was closed, and he could no longer see her.
In front of the vast palace wall, Zi Wei felt lost and helpless.
The girl he loved was out of sight, never to be seen again.
Yet she had left him one final command, through tears he murmured, âReturn to Yue Lianâs side, be a good husband, stay by her side without leaving, have children with her, grow old together, stay together in life and death, and then, never see me again.â
âReturn to Yue Lianâs side, be a good husband, stay by her side without leaving, have children with her, grow old together, stay together in life and death, and then, never see me again.â
âReturn to Yue Lianâs side, be a good husband, stay by her side without leaving, have children with her, grow old together, stay together in life and deathâ¦â
These repeated phrases echoed through the empty streets.
The night wind began to blow, scattering sadness all over the ground.
Zi Wei kept repeating these words as he made his way back to the residence of Yue Lian.
Yue Lian was accustomed to waiting for him late into the night, although she had no idea whether he would return or where he was.
The old steward made him a bowl of ginger tea and sighed softly, âMiss, stop waiting, go to sleep. The master has been gone for so long without a single word; you might not see him, donât break down your own health.â
âI know, Iâll sleep in a while.â
The smile on Yue Lianâs face warmed the cold night.
Hearing some movement outside, she and the old steward went out to check.
Zi Wei came back like a restless spirit, still muttering Su Yingxueâs command over and over.
Seeing him return, Yue Lian was overjoyed, âHusband, youâre back, you must be tired, go back to the room and rest.â
She supported Zi Wei back to the room, he walked as if in a trance, but kept muttering continuously.
Yue Lian had never heard him talk so much before.
After he had repeated those words over and over, Yue Lian began to feel alarmed, âHusband, these words areâ¦â
Zi Wei did not answer her, lying in bed, still muttering those words.
The old steward, seeing him like this, was greatly shocked, âMiss, the master might be ill? Like thisâ¦â
âDonât talk nonsense, go rest, Iâll take care of him.â
Yue Lian became stern, she would not allow anyone to speak ill of Zi Wei.
The old steward seeing her so absorbed, could only sigh deeply.
He said no more.
Yue Lian took off Zi Weiâs shoes, then wrung out a handkerchief to wipe his face.
He looked at her, and no longer repeated those words, but when Yue Lian spoke to him, he did not respond, only saying, âShe wanted me to be a good husband, have children with you, grow old together, stay together in life and death.â
âShe?â Yue Lianâs heart skipped, suddenly realizing, the only one who could make Zi Wei so obedient was Su Yingxue.
Were these words Su Yingxueâs, given to him like a command?
Yue Lian smiled bitterly, tinged with helplessness.
âI will definitely fulfill her command.â
Zi Wei gazed at her, deep affection in his eyes, but Yue Lian knew that none of it belonged to her.
She threw down the handkerchief and drew the bed curtains.
She had become a wife as she wished, but all thanks to Su Yingxue.
She did not know whether to thank Su Yingxue, but from tonight onward, she had a husband; she was truly a wife.
