Chapter 1048:
Ritchie held Tonya quietly, his silence speaking volumes.
He had long seen through her facade, knowing she had been putting on a brave face for him all this time, trying to reassure him.
Her likely breakdown if he left her behind had brushed off any fleeting thoughts of committing suicide.
At midnight, Harlee still lay awake. Propped up on her hospital bed, she stared out the window, her eyes dry but unblinking.
Tonya kept watch in the living room. Suddenly, the sound of a door creaking open reached her ears. Rhys stepped in, his expression cold.
âWhy are you here?â
Tonya shot him a frosty look and said firmly, âDonât go in.â
Rhys ignored Tonya, and she quickly stepped in his way.
âShe knows about Bartâs and Ritchieâs conditions.â
A while back, Harlee had returned to her ward upon learning Bartâs and Ritchieâs conditions. Not long after that, Tonya, having pushed herself to regain her composure, hastily came over to offer Harlee comfort.
Since learning the truth, Harlee had stayed in bed, refusing food despite Tonyaâs pleas.
Harlee only gazed at Tonya, her eyes filled with tears.
âTonya, Iâm in painâ¦â
Tonya couldnât contain herself any longer and began to cry uncontrollably.
Even when none were left to shed, she still wept.

Together, they wept for a while, and when exhaustion set in, Tonya lay beside Harlee to sleep.
But Harlee never closed her eyes.
Later, concerned that her own sorrow would affect Harlee, Tonya chose to wait in the living room.
At Tonyaâs words, Rhys swiftly brushed past her, heading straight for Harleeâs room.
By the time Tonya caught up, he had already opened the door.
They both looked over at the same time, seeing Harlee propped up on her pillow, her gaze fixed on the window. The dim light cast a soft glow on her expressionless face, as though illuminating a body that had lost all vitality.
âStop staring.â Rhys entered with a serious expression, and as Tonya tried to follow, he slammed the door shut. Tonya was left standing outside. She rubbed her nose, gazing at the closed door, murmuring, âIâll trust you one last time!â
If it had been in the past, Tonya would have stayed by Harleeâs side to console her, not needing Rhysâ assistance.
But now, because of Ritchieâs condition, she could barely contain her overwhelming emotions, so she chose to stay quietly near Harlee, letting Rhys step in instead.
Harlee sat motionless, her view now blocked by Rhys.
Her eyes remained fixed, unblinking. She calmly extended her hands, trying to push him away.
But he didnât budge, so she pushed harder, blood seeping from her wound. Still, she didnât blink, as if the pain didnât faze her.
âLee,â Rhys called out to her, a trace of pain in his voice. Seeing her unchanging expression, his heart hardened. When he glanced up again, there was a flicker of coldness in his gaze.
