Chapter 1467:
In Wessonâs eyes, Harlee was nothing short of diabolical. His heart pounded in his chest, and the taste of the alcohol vanished in an instant.
Wesson now understood why Margo had chosen a mundane meeting over this nightmarish gathering. Just the sight of Harlee was enough to shave years off his life. He realized he had been duped by Margoâ¦
As the tension reached its peak, Harlee scanned the room. Her gaze alone was enough to make heads bow. With a dismissive air, she announced, âThe showâs over. You should all leave now.â
Her words acted like a spell. Wesson and several others rose immediately.
âHave a good day,â Wesson said respectfully.
Harlee waved her hand dismissively, signaling the end of the gathering. At her gesture, everyone swiftly rose and made their exit, eager to escape the oppressive atmosphere. None of them wanted to linger in the toxic air of the banquet a moment longer.
The room, now cloaked in an eerie silence, was left with only Harlee, Rhys, Patrick, Robbie, and Casper.
Casper inhaled deeply, mustering his courage, and declared with a mix of defiance and desperation, âKill me or torture me, whatever suits your fancy! But be warnedâeven though Iâm not the prized candidate of the Happer family, they wonât stand idly by if Iâm mistreated!â
Casperâs voice began confidently, but as his gaze lingered on Harleeâs unperturbed face, his certainty faltered. He couldnât fathom her calmness. He had thought that the mere mention of the Happer familyâs vengeance would unsettle her.
For the first time, Casper questioned the influence and stature of his family. He even began to doubt Nolaâs capabilities, whose reputation had once seemed insurmountable. Could Nola truly handle Harlee?
Harlee cocked her head, her eyes flicking to Rhys with a playful smirk, and teased, âDarling, someone seems to think you fear the wrath of the Happer family. Is there any truth to that?â
Her words were laced with irony. Casper had accused her of relying on Rhys for support, and she naturally took it upon herself to clear the air.
Rhysâ eyes softened as he looked at Harlee, affectionately brushing her nose with his fingers, and chuckled.
âWell⦠Eradicating the entire Happer family might be a tad challenging in the short run, but stirring up a little trouble for them? Thatâs childâs play.â
Rhys spoke with a wry twist of his brows, his demeanor reflecting careful consideration.
Harlee raised an eyebrow, signaling Casper to proceed. She hadnât ended Casperâs life immediately, nor had she allowed Robbie to rough him up, because she intended to extract information about Nola from him. However, Harlee preferred it if Casper volunteered the information himself. Either way, she had time on her side and wasnât in a rush to break him down.
For reasons he couldnât fathom, Casper sensed that Rhysâ threats were not hollow. His current plight was a direct result of Nolaâs manipulation. Without her interference, and with Rhysâ backing, he could have easily ascended as the head of the Happer family. Therefore, he felt no allegiance to Nolaâs cause.
Yet, Casper didnât harbor enough resentment toward Nola to wish her dead. He was painfully aware that his current predicament stemmed from his own greed. Had he focused solely on becoming the head of the Happer family, his business would still have been flourishing. Alas, he couldnât turn back time.
âMrs. Green, letâs strike a bargain. Spare my lifeâthatâs all I askâand Iâll spill everything I know, including how Nola became part of the Happer family!â Casper finally mustered the courage to meet Harleeâs gaze.
âI assure you, this is fresh intelligence. A fair trade, wouldnât you agree?â
Casper struggled to maintain a composed tone, but his nerves were frayed. He wasnât certain if his information would hold any value to Harlee. In his mind, Harlee could easily crush Nola without breaking a sweat.
