Chapter 1516:
âThatâs fine. If youâre on board, you can select from any of the elite soldiers across our units.â
Each unit had its own group of elite soldiers, and in total, there were at least forty or fifty, giving Harlee plenty of options to choose from.
âAny of the elite soldiers?â A chilly voice interrupted them. Kareem turned to see Rhys and immediately straightened up, his unease apparent as he faced his brother-in-law emerging from the kitchen.
Despite being the elder, Kareemâs discomfort was noticeable. Clearing his throat, he suggested, âTake your time to consider, Harlee. I need to make a phone call.â
With that, Kareem quickly ascended the stairs, leaving Harlee and Rhys alone in the living room.
Rhysâ gaze fixed on Harlee, who reclined on the sofa. His smile sharpened as he scrutinized her.
âDoes this involve that distasteful contest with Breezeland?â he asked, arching an eyebrow.
Harlee had briefed Rhys about the competition after her meeting with Holden, so he was not uninformed.
âYes.â
Harlee was forthright in her response.
Rhys seated himself beside her, massaging his temples before asking, âHadnât you decided against participating to focus on dealing with Nola?â
Resting her chin in her hand, Harlee responded, âThe legacy of those revolutionary martyrs means a great deal to me. I wouldnât want to let them down.â
Rhys grasped her motivation instantly, which was why she had declined Holden but accepted Kareemâs request. Their years together had forged a deep, unspoken bond. He supported her decisions unconditionally. Yetâ¦
Rhys edged closer, his voice lowering.
âBeing the trainer will mean spending three months in intense sessions with those tough soldiers. Lee, Iâll be jealous.â
Harlee paused, a flicker of amusement in her eyes. After a brief moment, her smile returned, her tone playful.
âAre you really that jealous?â
Rhys drew her close, locking eyes with her, his smile slight but firm.
âYes, I find myself jealous every single day.â
His jealousy extended even to their son, Felix.
Harlee playfully tapped Rhysâ nose, her smile mischievous.
âIt seems Iâll have to keep you close then.â
She disliked the thought of being away from her husband and child for three months. A few days apart was manageable, but anything longer than a couple of weeks was unthinkable.
âWhat are you suggesting?â A flicker of curiosity lit Rhysâ eyes.
âGiven my capabilities, making a few special requests shouldnât be challenging, right?â With a raised eyebrow, Harlee left that comment hanging and then fell silent.
The evening before their scheduled departure, in the dining room of the Sanderson family home, Harlee was chewing on a late-night snack, head bowed, when she casually announced, âOh, by the way, weâre all heading to the military base tomorrow.â
Rhys finally grasped the implications of her statement from two days ago. Her resourcefulness was truly remarkable. She had arranged for both him and Felix to accompany her on a highly confidential mission, under the guise of them being military family members, allowing them unrestricted access to the military base. Naturally, Felix would remain at home under the Sandersonsâ care.
Rhys pulled his chair closer, resting his head on Harleeâs shoulder.
âLee, you spoil me too much.â
