Chapter 16:
âI am his fiancéeâ¦â
âNo, youâre not,â Harlee cut in.
âStop flattering yourself.â
Exposed, Lindsay felt heat rush to her cheeks again.
âYou called me a shameless woman who tried to cling to Rhys, an engaged man.
But seriously, didnât you fit the description better than me?â Harlee let out a snort and shoved Lindsay aside.
âShame on you.â
Caught off guard by Harleeâs forceful shove, Lindsay stumbled, landing hard on her backside.
âOuch! That hurt!â Lindsay yelled, her frustration boiling over as Harleeâs words hit too close to home.
Even though Lindsay was somewhat attractive, she couldnât hold a candle to Harleeâs stunning beauty.
Ignoring the simmering Lindsay, Harlee walked back to the ward and handed Rhys the water bottle.
âDrink this and get some rest. Iâm leaving now,â Harlee said calmly.
âThank you for saving me. I wonât take the twenty million we agreed on. If you ever need help again, just reach out. Iâll do what I can to assist.â
Harlee knew twenty million wouldnât truly repay a life-saving favor. Still, she felt the need to make a promise, despite her desire for no further entanglement.
Rhys watched her profile, his lips pressing together slightly.
He was observant and picked up on Harleeâs sudden distance.
As the eldest son of the Green family, he was used to being the center of attention, not the one seeking it.
âActually, I need to ask you for a favor right now, Miss Sanderson. My grandfather has woken up.
He wants to see you,â Rhys said.
Having just promised to help, Harlee knew she couldnât say no. They walked to Nathanielâs ward together. Neither of them spoke much, which made the atmosphere feel tense and awkward.
âIn a few days, thereâs going to be an auction,â Rhys said, breaking the silence.
âTheyâll be auctioning rare and exquisite items, including a masterpiece by the famous international mechanical expert, Mr. P. Miss Sanderson, I happen to have two tickets. Would you like to come with me?â
Their connection had started with Harleeâs passion for aircraft repair, and Rhys surmised she might enjoy the event.
Harlee indeed had an interest in it.
But after learning about Rhysâ engagement, she wanted to keep her distance.
âThanks for the invitation, but Iâm really busy these days and probably wonât have time,â she said, politely turning him down.
Rhys was no fool and sensed Harlee wasnât interested in him.
He shifted the topic.
âIâve already asked someone to retrieve the surveillance footage from the hospital about your time in the morgue.â
