Chapter 25:
Lonnie chuckled and said, âThatâs more like it.â
Due to Ettaâs actions, Harlee was intentionally sidelined.
From the front, the three of them appeared to be a family, while Harlee, the biological daughter who had just returned, seemed like an outsider.
âIâve always thought of you two as my parents,â Etta said with a happy laugh, turning to give Harlee a triumphant smile, her eyes shining with smugness.
Ettaâs gaze seemed to say, âSee? Even if youâre their biological daughter, so what? In this house, Iâm the most important.â
Harlee paused in her tracks. Listening to Ettaâs chatter, Lonnie and Skyla were momentarily distracted but still remembered their daughter who had just returned. They quickly noticed Harleeâs pause.
âWhatâs wrong, Harlee?â Skyla asked. She instinctively freed herself from Ettaâs grip and hurried back to Harleeâs side. Lonnie also shifted his focus entirely to Harlee.
Seeing this, Etta bit her lower lip in frustration. Watching Ettaâs expressions change, Harlee felt a sense of satisfaction. She gestured toward Etta and asked, âWho is she?â
Only when Harlee voiced her question did Lonnie and Skyla realize they had neglected to introduce Etta to Harlee, a careless oversight.
âEtta is Callieâs daughter.
Callie has served this household for the last thirty years. You will meet her soon,â Skyla explained.
âCallie is reliable and friendly. If you ever need anything, go straight to her.â
âI see,â Harlee said, a small smile forming on her face.

âSo, sheâs the daughter of the maid.â
The moment those words left her lips, Ettaâs smile turned stiff.
Harleeâs remark had struck a nerve.
Harlee found Ettaâs earlier arrogance amusing.
Despite being the daughter of a maid, Etta had the nerve to challenge her as soon as she walked in.
For a moment, she had assumed Etta was her younger sister.
How hilarious.
While Harleeâs comment made Etta seethe with anger, her parents didnât think it was out of line. Skyla said, âEtta grew up in this household while Callie worked diligently, so weâre quite close to her.â As she spoke, her eyes reddened, as if she wanted to say more but couldnât bring herself to.
Lonnie softly patted Skyla on the back. The anxiety they had felt upon learning of Harleeâs disappearance at that time was overwhelming, and whenever her vanishing crossed their minds, a wave of sadness and concern hit them.
Etta, who was around Harleeâs age, reminded them of their missing child, making them more attentive to her.
âI see,â Harlee said with a nod.
âLetâs eat. Iâm hungry.â Harlee was starving, as she hadnât had a proper meal all day.
Before moving out from the Gill family, she hadnât eaten well.
After that, she stayed in the hospital for a couple of hours, followed by bungee jumping with Rhys.
