Chapter 31:
With that, Harlee said no more.
Skyla fell silent, slowly furrowing her brow. She walked Dr. Lambert to the door and thought it might be time for a serious chat with Etta.
After all, Harlee had just come home. She didnât want Ettaâs outbursts to make Harlee feel unwelcome.
If Harlee knew her mother planned to confront Etta, she might have laughed out loud. Skylaâs words would undoubtedly infuriate Etta.
After dinner, Skyla took Harleeâs hand and brought up her fiancé.
âThe engagement was set up when you were still in my belly. Now that youâre back, both families are revisiting it.â
Harlee frowned at the unwanted engagement.
Taking in her reaction, Skyla tried to comfort her.
âYouâre both young, and thereâs plenty of time to get to know each other and build a relationship.
Heâs a good guy, capable and ambitious.
Even while you were away, he kept his distance from other women. Ultimately, itâs your choice, Harlee.â
âOkay.â With her motherâs thoughtful approach, Harlee couldnât say no and agreed to meet her fiancé.
As Harlee headed to her room, she felt a prickling sensation at the staircase. She halted, crossed her arms, and looked toward the corner.
âCome out.â

Etta stepped into view, her eyes filled with jealousy and bitterness, yet she didnât dare come closer.
âA few days back, you were still a pumpkin, yet now, you are found back by your family and even have a high-status fiancé. You must be overâ¦
âThe moon, right? Drop the act, could you? Acting all indifferent while youâre gleeful in your mind!â
Every time Etta looked at Harlee, she felt the urge to rip off her facade.
Harlee scoffed.
âDid you come here just to say that?â
âQuit being so sarcastic!â Etta shot back.
âWant to mock me as a mere maidâs child again? If you hadnât returned, youâd be living far worse than me! Do you really think youâre going to marry the richest guy in Baythorn? Well, your little dream is about to fall apart!â
At that, Etta felt a surge of satisfaction, speaking with deep malice.
âBefore you returned, I heard your esteemed fiancé had taken a liking to a country girl.
He even introduced her to his grandfather and spent the whole day with her.â
Skyla wasnât aware of these things, but Etta was. She eagerly awaited Harleeâs breakdown at her words.
But Harlee just raised an eyebrow, showing no emotion, and walked to her room.
âLetâs see how long you can keep up that facade!â Etta yelled.
âYour dreams of wealth are dashed! You must be seething.
Ha-ha! Even if you do marry him, youâll be nothing but strangers sharing a bed.
