Chapter 40:
Harlee spotted Adelina and Phoebe in the audience. Somehow, Adelina had managed to appease Phoebe despite the earlier incident.
Even though Phoebe wore a frown, she didnât turn down Adelinaâs friendly invitation.
Harlee glanced at them before turning her gaze away. They didnât matter to her at all.
Adelina and Phoebe couldnât help but notice Harlee, who sat comfortably in the exclusive stands. Jealousy and displeasure washed over them.
âWhatâs she so smug about? Thereâs no way she has a black card,â Phoebe said through clenched teeth.
Adelina pressed her lips together.
Her eyes were full of resentment, and her words were suggestive.
âThis racetrack lets members bring guests who can enjoy the same benefits. Maybe Harlee was brought here by someone with a black card?â
âThatâs got to be it!â Phoebe exclaimed, slapping her thigh in frustration.
âWho knows where she found someone so important?â
The others with them felt just as envious. Why were they not as lucky? Black card holders were people they might never meet in their whole lives.
Adelina smiled, pleased with their reactions.
Her voice was full of spite.
âEven though sheâs no longer the eldest daughter of the Gill family and has no money, sheâs still beautiful and has a fantastic figure. Sheâs exactly the kind of woman many men would go for, donât you think?â

Her words struck a chord with Phoebe and the others. Their jealousy quickly shifted into contempt.
âI thought she was someone who stuck to her principles. Turns out, sheâs just a tramp!â
âAnd she continues to act so virtuous. Itâs disgusting!â
âWhat did she have to do to get a big shot to bring her here?â
Collinâs expression shifted, and bitterness colored his words.
âWhat a disgusting woman!â
Collin had always tried to get close to Harlee, but she had shown no interest in him. The assumption that she was off being someoneâs plaything for money was truly shameful!
As Collin took in Harleeâs stunning looks, he regretted not taking a chance on her before.
At least he could have had her and then discarded her.
Phoebe scoffed in annoyance.
âWhat does she know about racing? Sheâs just here for the show.â
âExactly! Sheâs probably here to entertain her sugar daddy and grab some attention.â
âI didnât expect her to be such a scheming bitch.â
Their comments grew harsher, as if being cruel could erase their earlier embarrassment and restore their pride.
The first race served as a warm-up for the professional racers.
Many familiar faces filled the track, the kind often seen on television.
âThatâs Alleyn! He just won the Landmassia Championship not long ago.â
âAnd look, thereâs Nicky.
