Chapter 48:
Because of Adelinaâs words, everyone pitied her, thinking Harlee had deliberately taken Adelinaâs place in the past, enjoying privileges that werenât rightfully hers.
Phoebe sneered, âWhen the true heir returns, the pretender has to step aside. Look at Harleeâs shabby attire. She must be leading a hard life now. Sheâs only suited to toil in the fields, not to enjoy any luxuries.â
Seeing Harlee unaffected, Phoebe mocked, âWhat? Canât you even afford the cheapest race car?â
Suddenly, the manager sensed a chill in the air.
He didnât dare meet Rhysâs eyes and quickly moved to secure a car for Harlee.
But before the manager could act, Harleeâs calm yet clear voice stopped him.
âI have a race car.â
The manager recalled Harlee had turned down his earlier offer of a race car.
âYou have a car?â Phoebe burst out laughing as if it were the funniest thing sheâd ever heard.
She pointed at Harlee and yelled, âDonât tell me that beat-up old car at the entrance is yours!â
âPhoebe, what are you saying?â Adelina gently patted her hand, playfully scolding, âIn a place like this, how could there possibly be a battered old car at the entrance?â
âPhoebe must be referring to the janitorâs vehicle, right?â
âNo way.
Even the janitors wouldnât drive something like that. I saw on TV that only junk dealers drive those.â
âHa-ha⦠Without the Gill family, Harlee is worse than a junk dealer.â

âHow hilariousâ¦â
Phoebe and her group erupted into laughter.
Adelina joined in the laughter but put on a show of sympathy.
âHarlee, if you canât afford to rent one, I can lend a hand. You were with the Gill family for quite some time. We have a connection.â
With that, Adelina signaled to a service attendant and murmured a few words.
âAdelina, youâre too generous.â Phoebe frowned.
âWhy bother helping her at all?â
Collin addressed Harlee, âSince when do you know how to race? This isnât a game.
Donât push yourself too hard! No one will come to your rescue if you mess up.â
Adelinaâs expression shifted slightly. She hastily gripped Collinâs arm and said sweetly, âCollin, you really donât need to worry about Harleeâs affairs!â
Adelina noticed Collinâs eyes were still on Harlee and tightened her hold on his arm.
Collin grimaced from the pressure but remained focused on Harlee, ignoring Adelina.
Harlee stood impassive.
âThis doesnât concern you,â she responded coldly.
Collin frowned at her.
âYouâre just embarrassing yourself,â he said sharply.
He was curious to see how Harlee would manage.
A woman out of her depth needed to learn her place.
