Chapter 49:

Then, a loud engine noise filled the air.

Everyone turned to see an old, beaten-up race car. It looked as though it had seen better days, with significant damage to its body and a door that was barely hanging on, unable to shut properly.

As it neared, a cloud of dust billowed around it, indicating it had been left neglected for a long time.

“Harlee, your car has arrived,” Adelina said cheerfully.

“I bought it for you. You can take it home now. Now that you have a car, there’s no need for that ancient one of yours anymore.”

Phoebe clapped her hands, laughing loudly.

“Damn! This car is just right for Harlee.”

“She could only handle something like this.”

“That’s not fair. Without Adelina, she couldn’t even afford this car.”

“I agree.

Ha-ha…”

Laughter erupted among the crowd.

The car seemed so out of place at the track that it was a wonder how the attendant managed to locate such a vehicle.

“Come on! Why are you just standing there? Are you so thrilled that you’re speechless?” Phoebe encouraged Harlee, eager for more drama.

Adelina’s other friends joined in the mockery.

Harlee looked at them and stated, “I said, I have a car.”

“Stop boasting. We all know you too well.”

“It’s probably just a pile of junk! Next to Adelina’s luxury car, yours is merely a pebble.”

“If you actually have a race car, then I’ll acknowledge you’re the top dog.

Anyone can brag, right?” Phoebe taunted.

Hearing Phoebe’s words caused Harlee to glance over.

Phoebe’s smile stiffened. She had a sinking feeling.

“Didn’t you vow to lick the ground clean if I’m a guest here? Have you done that yet?” Harlee reminded her.

Recalling her previous humiliation, Phoebe’s anger exploded, and her face turned red.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. You know exactly how you got in here.”

“I’m well aware,” Harlee responded calmly.

“But what does that have to do with you not keeping your promise?”

“You…”

Noticing that Phoebe was speechless, Adelina quickly interjected, “That was just a joke.”

“And this time, is it a joke too?” Harlee retorted.

“Of course…”

“Absolutely not!” Phoebe cut Adelina off, stubbornly saying, “I meant what I said. If your car is better than Adelina’s, I’ll concede you’re quite something and even make you coffee.”

Phoebe clarified her challenge, insisting the car had to be Harlee’s and superior to Adelina’s.
