Chapter 49:
Then, a loud engine noise filled the air.
Everyone turned to see an old, beaten-up race car. It looked as though it had seen better days, with significant damage to its body and a door that was barely hanging on, unable to shut properly.
As it neared, a cloud of dust billowed around it, indicating it had been left neglected for a long time.
âHarlee, your car has arrived,â Adelina said cheerfully.
âI bought it for you. You can take it home now. Now that you have a car, thereâs no need for that ancient one of yours anymore.â
Phoebe clapped her hands, laughing loudly.
âDamn! This car is just right for Harlee.â
âShe could only handle something like this.â
âThatâs not fair. Without Adelina, she couldnât even afford this car.â
âI agree.
Ha-haâ¦â
Laughter erupted among the crowd.
The car seemed so out of place at the track that it was a wonder how the attendant managed to locate such a vehicle.
âCome on! Why are you just standing there? Are you so thrilled that youâre speechless?â Phoebe encouraged Harlee, eager for more drama.
Adelinaâs other friends joined in the mockery.

Harlee looked at them and stated, âI said, I have a car.â
âStop boasting. We all know you too well.â
âItâs probably just a pile of junk! Next to Adelinaâs luxury car, yours is merely a pebble.â
âIf you actually have a race car, then Iâll acknowledge youâre the top dog.
Anyone can brag, right?â Phoebe taunted.
Hearing Phoebeâs words caused Harlee to glance over.
Phoebeâs smile stiffened. She had a sinking feeling.
âDidnât you vow to lick the ground clean if Iâm a guest here? Have you done that yet?â Harlee reminded her.
Recalling her previous humiliation, Phoebeâs anger exploded, and her face turned red.
âDonât get ahead of yourself. You know exactly how you got in here.â
âIâm well aware,â Harlee responded calmly.
âBut what does that have to do with you not keeping your promise?â
âYouâ¦â
Noticing that Phoebe was speechless, Adelina quickly interjected, âThat was just a joke.â
âAnd this time, is it a joke too?â Harlee retorted.
âOf courseâ¦â
âAbsolutely not!â Phoebe cut Adelina off, stubbornly saying, âI meant what I said. If your car is better than Adelinaâs, Iâll concede youâre quite something and even make you coffee.â
Phoebe clarified her challenge, insisting the car had to be Harleeâs and superior to Adelinaâs.
