I opened my eyes and saw that everything was white.
Am I in heaven?
Then I saw to the right of me and there was a woman standing there who looked like a nurse.
She is a nurse for real, you dumbo!
She saw me and went out. Then, I observed the surroundings around me. It was a hospital.
I am in a hospital. So, I am not dead.
After a few seconds, doctor came running towards me.
"How are you feeling Lara?", she asked.
"Umm fine. Where is Luiz?", I asked.
"Luiz will come.", she said.
She gave some instructions to the nurse and left.
The nurse gave me a very warm smile and I smiled back at her.
This hospital looks so good!
After few seconds Luiz came inside the room and he immediately walked towards me by taking huge steps.
He sat on the seat next to my bed and held my palm in between both his palms.
I saw his eyes they had dark circles under them. Then, he bent his head on my palm.
"Luiz?", I called.
He lifted his head immediately and I saw his face again.
"I am sorry Lara. You had to go through so much because of me.", he said in a very sad tone.
"Its okay Luiz. I am fine now. But, how are you? Even you were hit by the bullet, right?", I asked.
"The bullet did not hit me. It just brushed past my arm by hurting my skin.", he said.
"Oh, hope you are fine now.", I said.
"I am.", he said.
"What happened?", I asked him.
"I just would not have been able to forgive myself if something would have happened to you. One life was already lost because of me. I would not have been able to tolerate it anymore if anything like that would have happened again.", he said.
He was really hurt and looked exhausted.
"Shhhh... I am fine. There will always be a few things which once done, cannot be undone. But we should be more careful from now on.", I said.
"He is dead. David is dead. I could finally do justice to Maryam's soul.", he said with relief.
I was sad.
But wait, did Luiz know before itself that it was David who killed Maryam.
"You knew that David killed Maryam?", I asked.
"Yes. But how do you know?", he asked me.
"David told me.", I said.
"Really? "
"But how do you know?", I asked.
"David went to Italy for his higher studies and he learnt Italian. When I was a friend of Daniel, I used to talk to David and I used to learn a bit of Italian from him whenever we met. So the first word I learnt from him was CIAO which means HELLO and from then, whenever we met, we used to say ciao to each other. When Maryam died, her father gave a note to me which was lying near her dead body. It had CIAO written on it. I understood it that time itself, that it was him.", he said.
"Huh! Why do people kill each other?", I said dismissively.
"He initiated it and I ended it. It's simple.", he said.
"You have no right to take someone's life Luiz.", I said totally frustrated.
"Well it was not me but one of the cops who shot him. He died in an encounter. So, it isn't my fault. Moreover, if he would have been alive, he would have killed me on that spot.", he said.
I just jerked my face away.
"Is it hurting?", he asked.
I moved my shoulder a little and it ached.
"Yeah.", I said.
"I am so sorry Lara! I should have not left you out that night. I don't know why, but I completely lost it that night and now, you are suffering because of me.", he said with a regret in his tone.
"Its okay Luiz. I am alive. But please do not leave me alone like that ever. I was really hurt that night. I seriously don't know for how long I cried.", I said.
"Hmm. I will never repeat that.", he said.
"Does Caroline know about all this?", I asked.
"No. She is still in Russia. I didn't tell her because I don't know how she would digest the news.", he said.
"Yeah.", I said.
"Luiz, please let her rest.", the doctor came and said.
"By the way Lara, meet my good friend, Andrea.", he said.
"Hello Andrea!", I said.
"Hello! I am sorry I couldn't attend your marriage. I was in Canada.", she said.
"Its okay", I said.
"Please take good care of her Andrea.", Luiz said.
"Don't worry Luiz, you know me. This is my duty. Probably you should go home and take rest. You look exhausted.", she said.
"No, I can't leave her alone.", he said.
"You can visit her anytime Luiz.", she said.
"Andrea is right Luiz. I will be fine.", I said assuring him.
He didn't speak anything. He just sat there without moving an inch.
So, he won't go.
"Go Luiz.", I said again.
He twisted his mouth.
"Okay take rest and recover soon." he said.
Days passed by. Andrea and nurses took a very good care of mine. I was not recovered completely but they were ready to discharge me by suggesting bed rest for a week.
Luiz brought me home. Right when we were inside. He scooped me in his arms.
"Hey what are you doing I still have pain over here.", I said.
"I know.", he said.
"Luiz I am fine. Bullet hit my shoulder and not my leg so I can walk.", I said.
"Still, I don't want you to stress yourself too much.", he said.
I knew that he was regretting a lot. From past few days he was entirely a different person. He used to take a very good care of me.
He took me upstairs and placed me on his bed.
"I don't think you like me sitting on your bed.", I said.
"You can sleep on my bed from now on. I shall sleep on one of those couches.", he said.
"Till I recover.", I clarified.
"Yeah sure.", he said.
I looked at the couches. They were small. I wondered how this tall guy will sleep on one of those couches.
"Well, all the best with that.", I said smiling at him.
"Thank you for your kind words.", he said sarcastically smiling at me.
