There had been two doppelgangers on the 16th stage.
The magician, and me.
But this time the adventurer was the doppelganger.
I could understand why the doppelganger changed from the magician to the adventurer.
The existence of the doppelganger changed every time I entered the tutorial.
If it didnât, according to the explanation on the 35th floor, this stage would be the same as the other stages.
What about the second doppelganger?
The second doppelganger hid inside of the challenger.
But in all 35 stages, the challengers couldnât change the settings of every stage.
If so, could I infer that there was no second doppelganger?
Or perhaps there was another doppelganger among the rest of the people?
I kept trying to figure it out, but I had no idea at all.
I would go up to the next stage as soon as the time was up anyway, so I decided not to think about it.
Although the doppelganger was killed, the atmosphere was still grim.
The mercenary stayed in the corner, grieving over the death of his friend, the adventurer.
Confirming that the magician was not his daughter, the paladin was saddened by the painful memories of the past that resurfaced.
He apologised to the magician and me, and then went to the same corner as the mercenary.
The knight comforted the mercenary and the paladin alternately, and then became depressed like the rest of them.
Just what were they doing...
âWell?â
âWhat? â
âWhy did you take me to the corner and ask me to build a barrier?â
Ah, this question...
âI wanted you to teach me some magic.â
My words made the magician frown.
âYou should have just said that you want me to teach you some magic. Why did you take me to the corner. It really scared me. Telling me to build a barrier also led to misunderstanding.â
The magicianâs attitude was still not good, but fortunately the misunderstanding was resolved.
After the magician saw how I had used the battle hammer to knock down the giant tentacle monster, no matter what kind of misunderstanding it was, would be naturally resolved.
âDid you know that?â
âKnow what?â
The magician always started a conversation suddenly.
âThe doppelganger used the adventurerâs appearance. You said that you knew who was the doppelganger.â
Maybe that was why the adventurer, or the doppelganger with the adventurerâs appearance, suddenly attacked me.
As the adventurer was the doppelganger, he became apprehensive because I said I knew who the doppelganger was.
At that time, a hostile atmosphere against me had been formed and while the paladin had been attacking me, the adventurer thought âYep! This is a good opportunity!â, and then he ran over to me.
âNope.â
She looked dumbfounded because of my words.
âYou really didnât know?â
I nodded.
âI thought it was you.â
âWhat? â
âI said I thought you had been the doppelganger.â
âW...what?â
A strange look came over the magicianâs face.
âSo, why did you ask me to build a barrier?â
âI just wanted to learn some magic from you. In exchange, I wouldnât tell other people that you were doppelganger.â
âFrom the doppelganger?!â
âYeah.â
The magicianâs look at me became sharp.
It was sharper than the time she had thought I had been a psychopath.
âHow dare you...â
The magician began to scold me .
How could you attempt to learn magic from the doppelganger, how could you try to hide the doppelganger, and how could you mistake me as the doppelganger.
She kept on talking.
This magician was much noisier than I had thought.
She had barely spoken anything when she had been using an old magicianâs appearance. She must be uncomfortable when she had restrained herself to not speak too much.
She and that depressed knight on the corner were a perfect match.
I listened to the magician without speaking anything, and I asked her suddenly.
âSo.â
âYes?â
âAre you gonna teach me some magic?â
To increase the success rate of the request, I picked up the hammer that had fallen on the floor from my hand and asked.
âO, of course.â
I succeeded.
* * *
There wasnât much to learn from the magician.
Because I had heard the knowledge that she knew from the doppelganger before.
By the end of the magic lecture which lasted for several hours, other people had fallen asleep one by one.
Perhaps due to the confusion, those people were unable to overcome their fatigue and soon fell asleep.
Perhaps because of the death of the doppelganger, they were all sleeping in the room together,
without even a night watch.
Except one.
âAfter hearing about the paladinâs story, I have thought a lot. In fact, there have been many dirty things in my family. Some of them are similar to what the paladin went through. The competition between aristocracy is actually much more vulgar and dirtier than the backstreet fight.â
So what!
âBut I did get out of that hole, because I had become a knight by accident. Oh, have I told you why I became a knight? Oh, I guess not. It was a particularly fortuitous chance. It started with the Duke of Heblan. Have you ever been to the Duke of Heblan? Although it is famous for the beautiful lakes, there are actually more swamps than lakes. My brother and my friend Robben are also there. Oh, this friend, Robben, is my childhood friend, and we made a lifelong commitment when we were young. He is a common civilian, but we are close friends regardless of his status. From there...â
âPlease.â
âYes? â
âCould you please just go to sleep.â
