Time had passed, and allowed for the new scandal involving Cermin Drychspiel again to cool down.
Nothing happened again ever since. At least, not on the surface.
âWhere are we going, Edel?â Klio asked nervously. âIsnât this the boyâs dorm room?â
âI have left some of my materials here.â Edelweiss answered plainly.
âH-How did you leave it in the first placeâ¦.. Ah, Edel, I though you would be more careful around boys after what happenedâ¦..â
âRonin borrowed it. I trust Ronin, heâs not like everyone else.â
Klio fidgeted with her vest. âI guessâ¦. Yeah, out of everyone so far, Ronin is the most decent next to Queen Lovushka and his troupe.â
Edelweiss wore a thin smile.
âYou had always been a fan of Lovushka, havenât you? When did it start?â
âOh, since I came here!â She replied happily from the memory. âI got bullied around a lot. Iâm not like you.â
âWeâre both girls, but Iâm not powerful enough to defend myself. Even from the weakest guys.â She looked downcast.
Then, she lifted her chin up again as she said:
âBut Queen Lovuska came at my side like a goddessâ¦.. offering his hand wearing white gloves and said that gentlemen shouldnât mess with ladies.â
âThey must know that women are also strong, and not only are we strong, we are also beautiful. Our daintiness is part of our strength.â.
âHe envied that, and admired womenâs beauty. Thatâs why he sought to have it himself.â
Edelweiss nodded. âAnd you donât find that way of thinking⦠twisted? Strange? Distrubing?â
âNot at all! To admire something that many people could notâ¦.. That makes Queen Lovushka special among all others!â
She clapped her hand. âHe still sees himself as a man, but enjoys womenâs clothes without caring for other peopleâs judgmentâ¦.. Isnât that so brave?â
âIt reminds me that here I am, someome who can wear those pretty clothes freelyâ¦. and yet Iâm too scared to present myself the way I want.â
âAlways wondering which clothes would be appealingâ¦.. yet at the same time not too strong, seductive, whorish or anything like that.â
âMen are expected to dress manly, some not caring for fashion for the fear of standing out. But Lovushka doesnât care.â
Edelweiss nodded. âI see now. Itâs all about his boldness, thatâs why you admire him so much.â
âYes! And also because he does look pretty no matter what he wears.â
âI want to be like that too, though I potentially could with my Mage Focusâ¦â
Edelweiss nodded. âAh, right. Your Mage Focus is Beautification, making things appear better than they are, right?â
âYouâre a Morpho Mageâ¦.. and your skill actually fits Artisans better than Scholars. What made you choose to be a Scholar in the first place?â
âWellâ¦. It may seem useless, but it does make up for being a good public figure. Politicians and lawyers need to appear better to be believable.â
âItâs not just people that I can beautify, I can beautify certain animals and plants that serve as specimen for experiments.â
âBut youâre rightâ¦..â Klio nodded. âI do for Artisans more. But Iâm too shy to perform because of it, and my family looks down on Artisans a lot.â
âMy mother believes women either be strong or smart to be âpowerfulâ. Beauty is not part of that.â
âBeauty is the skill of the seducers and the cheap harlots on the streets that rely on looks to survive.â
Edelweiss was quiet for a while. Klio thought she was going to say something deep and inspiring to cheer her upâ¦
But she only said. âWeâre here.â
They entered the room, and Klio blinked in amazement with the many gadgets and machinery inside.
âAh, this was the invention from the Exhibit, right?â Klio went over to the resurrecting chair connected to bright blue nodes.
âI thought it was taken away by the scientific society?â
âIt was. But Ronin had a blueprint, and so he had replicated the machine again.â Edelweiss explained. âWant to try and see how it feels yo sit down?â
âYes! It doesnât look too comfortable though, it does look a little intimidating.â
âOh?â Edelweiss raised an eyebrow. âWhy donât you beautify it?â
Klio sat on the chair. âBut wouldnât Ronin get mad with me meddling with his things?â
âNo. I think he would be thankful for helping him improve the appearance of this chair.â
Klio thought about it, then nodded.
âAlright then. Hold on, this might take a while.â
She just sat there, closing her eyes. But the chair started to move and creak as she did.
The metal structure curled, and out of nowhere, soft velvet cushions appeared.
Until it looked more like a throne rather than a machine. Something appealing to look at and sit on.
Edelweiss told her:
âYour skill really does suit Artisan a lot. Even when you donât have much power, and a weaker Flameâ¦people would love to have you there.â
âR-Really?â
âYes, not to mention there are more girls there and kind people like Lovushka.â
âWith the Scholars, youâll have too many expectations, especially from dumb men that donât know how to appreciate different kinds of usefulness from the norm.â
âSoâ¦.. Why donât you move Spires? â
Klio thought about this offer, not noticing that she was being strapped into the machine, and Edelweiss was reaching behind her cloak.
âButâ¦.. my parentsâ¦..â
Edelweiss chuckled. âYou wanted to be bolder, right? And the boldest you can be is to defy your own parents.â
âBe like your idol. Donât listen to what other people say, do what it is that you want.â
âMaybeâ¦.. Maybe if I can prove that I am not able to survive in the Scholars at allâ¦.. Theyâll allow me to.â Klio thought.
Edelweiss pulled out a knife.
âI can help with that.â
âEdel, what are youââ AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!â
âBeautify.â
âForget.â
When Klio woke up, she canât remember a thing. She was lying on a bed, and thereâs nothing out of the ordinary for her.
Her clothes even look shinier than usual. Did she beautify herself accidentally?
âI found it.â Edelweiss told her, holding a bunch of papers. âShall we go? You suddenly fainted, you donât look so well.â
âYesâ¦.. I feel strangeâ¦..â She rubbed her forehead. âAnywayâ¦.. we should go. I donât like staying in a boyâs room for too long.â
Edelweiss nodded, and just help her go outside.
âAbout what you said earlierâ¦.. Iâll think about it.â
Edelweiss nodded. âYou really should. Hmm, the remaining 20 minutes of lunch break is almost up.â
âI suggest you go talk to a Councillor first about your decision to change Spires. Maybe youâll be able to change tomorrow.â
âAlright⦠Thanks, Edel. Iâll try to keep in touch even when I change Spires!â
She waved goodbye to her. âNo need. Iâm just happy that youâre deciding thingsnfor yourself.â
As Edelweiss walked back to the classroom, she shifted into someone else.
âScot-free.â Ronin grinned.
âAnd one level gainedâ¦.. Hmm, who should I do next?â
âThanks to Klio, I could fool more people into sitting in the resurrecting machine without realizing it.â
âMaybe I could set it up as just a normal fancy sofa that people can rest their legs on. Ah, beauty does have its perks.â
And so, the Legend of the Haunted Couch or the Daemonâs Chair in the Exhibition room slowly came⦠As people mysteriously felt weak and lose some of their Flames upon sitting on itâ¦..
But not remembering much else.
