I feel completely disorientated and helpless as Iâm lugged over a shoulder and carried somewhere.
Sounds come and go, not really registering.
I lose touch with reality, and when I come to enough to make sense of my surroundings, I hear a motor droning and water splashing.
My bodyâs shivering uncontrollably from the ice-cold air blowing over me, and I manage to let out a groan.
âHow was the high, babe?â A man asks.
High?
Babe?
Where am I?
I have to fight to pry my eyes open, but my vision keeps going in and out of focus.
Someone slaps my cheek lightly, then a man laughs, âSheâs still out of it.â
I realize Iâm in a boat as it starts to slow down, and a minute or so later, Iâm hauled over a shoulder again.
I manage to make out a bigger boat, and some control over my body begins to return. Bile churns in the pit of my stomach, and for a moment, it feels like Iâm going to puke.
Iâm tossed down on a hard surface, and the back of my head takes a knock, drawing another groan from me.
I haveâ¦to getâ¦up.
My head rolls to the side, and I watch as men sit down on leather seats before the bigger boat starts to move.
Where are they taking me?
Finally whatever they gave wears off enough that Iâm able to lift my head. Feeling sluggish, I pull myself up into a sitting position, bracing my back against the side of the boat.
âI thought you said sheâs still out of it,â one of the men mutters.
âShould I shoot her up again?â
âNah, the shitâs too expensive to waste on her.â
âWhereâ¦am I?â I ask, my voice slurred.
âThe wide-open sea, babe.â
As my mind clears up more, I remember the drug dealers grabbing me and saying I have to pay off Mandyâs debt.
Oh, God.
The thought has my senses returning full force, and I glance around as I climb to my feet.
There are only three men on the boat with me. For an insane moment, I contemplate jumping overboard, but with my wrists tied, Iâll drown.
âWant to skinny dip?â one of the assholes ask before he bursts out laughing.
âNo, thanks. Itâs a bit too cold for that shit,â I mutter, feeling calmer than I should.
Losing my cool will only get me killed.
Jesus, Iâm thirsty.
âIs there anything to drink?â I ask as I move to an open seat and sit down.
âNo food and drinks on this cruise, babe,â one of them answers me with a smirk.
The wind is fucking cold, and it feels as if Iâm turning blue, which has me snapping, âIs there a blanket or something I can use to keep warm?â
The one who talked to me the most nods his head at me. âSheâs starting to annoy me. Shoot her up.â
âNo!â I cry as an injection is dug out of a pocket. âIâll shut up.â
One of the assholes gives me a evil-as-fuck grin before saying, âToo late.â
When I dart up, Iâm knocked off my feet, and once again, I find myself face down as a needle is stuck into my arm.
Shit.
No.
âStop.â
âIâll shutâ¦up.â
âD..onât.â
The world warps, and suddenly, I donât feel so cold anymore.
Dario
Weâre an hour behind the fuckers, which has given them one hell of a head start.
The van stopped near a marina and is now heading back in our direction. Which could mean they either dropped Eden off or worse.
âGive or take twenty minutes until weâll cross paths with them,â I mutter.
Carlo is behind the steering wheel, Damianoâs in the passenger seat, and Iâm in the back with Angelo.
Damiano glances over his shoulder and mutters, âYou know how this goes, Dario. If Edenâs mother owes them money, theyâve probably handed her over to another crew whoâll make her work to pay off the debt.â
The thought had already crossed my mind, but I instantly shunned it. Having Damiano say it out loud makes a growl build in my chest.
My tone is filled with rage as I say, âOver my dead body, am I letting them use my woman as a prostitute.â
âIt wonât come to that,â Angelo murmurs, his tone much calmer than I feel. âWeâll get to her in time.â
My eyes remain glued to the road ahead, and it takes way too fucking long before we see the van.
âHold on,â Carlo mutters.
The next second he slams on the breaks as he makes a sharp turn.
All the SUVs behind us form a barricade in case the van gets past us.
I shove the door open, and as I climb out, I pull my two guns from behind my back, where they are tucked into my waistband. I raise my arms and train the barrels on the windscreen.
âWhere the fuck is Eden?â I shout.
The drug dealers look stunned for a couple of seconds, then they pile out of the van.
I open fire, and Iâm backed up by more shots being fired by my friends.
As one of the fuckers drops from a gunshot to the leg, I move in on him and step on his hand so heâll let go of his gun.
The gunfire ends as abruptly as it started, and Carlo comes to haul the remaining fucker, whoâs still alive, to his feet. He struggles to stand as Damiano nods for me to do my thing.
âWhat did you do with Eden?â
The drug dealer gives me a look filled with disrespect, which has me swinging my fist at his face.
âWhat did you do with my woman?â I ask again.
He spits blood out of his mouth, then mutters, âThe bitch is gone.â
His words shudder through me.
âGone as in dead, or on her way to work as a prostitute?â Damiano asks, his tone dark and impatient.
The drug dealer grins, his teeth covered in blood. âDoes it matter?â
Losing his patience, Damiano shoots the man in his foot, making him collapse to the gravel.
âTraffic is starting to pile up on either side of us,â Angelo says. âWe need to go.â
âTell us where she is, and weâll let you live,â Franco mutters.
âShe was transferred to a boat,â the dealer fesses up. âI donât know what happens to the girls after we hand them over.â
Damiano nods with his head. âRun.â
The fucker stumbles to his feet and starts hopping toward a nearby field, his useless leg being dragged behind him.
Raising my arm, I take aim, and with a single shot to his head, I drop his ass on the side of the road.
âNo one lives,â I mutter as I turn around and walk back to the SUV.
Climbing in, I grab my tablet and open a different app where I begin hacking into law enforcement programs that monitor vessels electronically.
Iâm aware of everyone getting back into the SUV and that weâre moving again, but I donât glance up as I look for a way to find out where Eden could be.
âWeâre going to the airfield,â Damiano instructs Carlo. âWe need to get airborne.â
