I managed to track down Miguelâs uncle and passed the information on to Damiano, who sent his men to capture him.
While weâre waiting for them to return, Iâm still searching for Miguel, whoâs somewhere in South America.
âYou wanted to see me?â Tyrone asks.
I glance over my shoulder and nod. âCome take a seat.â
I wait for him to sit down, his eyes flicking over my system before settling on me.
âI have a job offer for you,â I get right to the point.
His eyebrow lifts. âYeah?â
âHow would you feel about driving Eden around and being her bodyguard?â
He doesnât even think about the question. âIâd like to do that. Beats working construction.â
âIâll send you for defensive driving courses and weapons training.â
This time, his eyebrows fly up. âOkay.â
âEver fired a gun?â I ask as I get up to grab a Glock from the cabinet where I keep all my weapons.
âYeah. I shot bottles and shit as a teenager.â
Letting out a chuckle, I shake my head and sit down again. Taking the magazine out, I reload it and show him the basics before I hand him the gun.
âJust point and shoot,â I mutter.
He takes the weapon then locks eyes with me again. âWhat are we going to do about the drug dealers?â
âMost of them were killed when we searched for Eden,â I tell him.
He seems surprised by the news but then says, âYeah, but as long as that bitch of a mother keeps using, more will come knocking on Edenâs door for payment.â
With all the shit that went down and helping Eden to adjust to her new life, I didnât even think about her mother.
âHas it happened before?â I ask. âDealers coming to Eden for money?â
âYeah, and every time Eden ends up beaten. The shit has to stop.â
Heâs right.
âIâll take care of the problem,â I say so he wonât worry.
He shifts in the chair. âI canât live here forever. When can I go back to my place?â
âAbout thatâ¦â I suck in a deep breath of air, then say, âIf you move back to Brownsville, youâll have to travel up and down at all hours to drive Eden around.â
His eyes narrow slightly. âWhat you getting at?â
âI own another apartment in this building. Itâs on the same floor as Esmereldaâs place. Move in there so youâre close to Eden.â
Shock tightens his features, and he just stares at me.
I give him a few seconds to recover, then add, âThe place is furnished, but youâre welcome to bring your own furniture as well.â
âHow much will the rent be?â he asks.
Fuck.
âWell, Iâm going to pay you twenty thousand a month. You donât have to pay rent, but if you insist, we can make it an even two thousand.â
âDafuq?â he mutters, looking at me as if Iâve grown two heads. âYouâre gonna pay me twenty thousand? Dollars? A month? Just to drive Edenâs ass around town?â
âYes.â
âMan, oh man.â
He shoots up from his chair and starts to pace up and down my office as if heâs a boxer getting ready to fight.
âMan, bro.â He stops to look at me with so much emotion I feel the punch in my heart. âCome here, son.â
Iâm hauled out of the chair and almost get a rib broken from the tight hug heâs giving me.
I pat him on the back. âTyroneâ¦ribs.â
âSorry.â He lets go of me then slaps me on the shoulder. âYou sure you wanna do all that for me?â
âYeah, but Iâd prefer if you didnât pay rent. The place is empty anyway.â
âNo, I gotta pay my way in life. It will feel like Iâm doing something to earn my spot in this classy building.â He shakes his head again, a look of disbelief still on his face.
âIn that case, the rent is due on the last day of the month. You can leave the cash with Esmerelda so she can use it for groceries.â
Opening one of the drawers at my desk, I pull a set of keys out and toss them at Tyrone.
He catches them, the smile on his face so wide all I see is a row of white teeth.
Giving me the sincerest expression Iâve ever seen, he says, âYou have a good heart, Dario. Thanks for everything.â
âYouâre welcome.â
He gives me a hopeful look. âCan I go look at the apartment?â
âSure.â I get up, and as we leave the office, he hollers, âBaby girl, where you at? Your old man has good news.â
âDownstairs,â she answers.
When we come down the stairs, he jingles the keys in the air. âDario just gave me the keys to a fancy-ass apartment in this building.â
âWhat?â she gasps, stopping what she was doing on the laptop. âFor real?â
âYes. Iâm gonna pay him rent.â
Her eyes meet mine, and she gives me a grateful look before she gets up from the couch and walks closer to us.
âWanna come with? Iâm gonna check out my new crib,â Tyrone asks with excitement lacing his words.
âYeah, weâre coming with,â Eden answers for both of us.
We all bundle into the elevator, and I press the button for the fifth floor.
On the ride down, Tyrone says, âI also got a new job.â
âYou did?â Eden asks, glancing up at him. âDoing what?â
âDriving your ass around. Iâm gonna be your driver slash bodyguard.â
She raises an eyebrow at us. âMy driver? For what? I donât have many places to go.â
âItâs for my peace of mind,â I mutter. âAnd Tyroneâs. We only want to keep you safe.â
âAwwâ¦â
âItâs good pay,â Tyrone adds. âSo donât get me in trouble with the boss.â
âBoss, my ass,â I mumble as the doors open.
We walk to the apartment, and when Tyrone unlocks the front door, I notice his handâs shaking a little. He pushes the door open, and stepping inside, he lets out a long whistle.
âWow. Nicccce,â Eden comments.
They glance around, and I can feel the excitement coming in waves off Tyrone. Before I can take cover, he comes at me and yanks me into a bear-hug.
âThank you,â he whispers, sounding choked up. âYou donât know how much this means to me. Everything youâve done for my girl and meâ¦â He shakes his head as he lets go and wipes over his eyes. âDamn man. Itâs like we won the lotto.â
I pat his arm. âYouâre welcome.â
Eden watches us from the side, her features tight with emotion.
Thinking they might want some time alone, I say, âIâm heading back to my place. You guys stay and look around.â
I start to walk toward the door, but Eden catches up to me and presses a kiss to my cheek. âThank you for doing all of this.â
I nod before leaving the apartment so I can get back to work.
On the ride up in the elevator, my thoughts turn to Edenâs mom. Sheâs placed my womanâs life in danger multiple times with her addiction problem.
When the doors open, I walk through the foyer and head back to my office while pulling out my phone.
Dialing a number, I listen as it rings.
âFrankie speaking.â
âItâs Dario.â
âWhat can I do for you?â
âI need cocaine.â
âSay what?â
âItâs not for me dumbass,â I snap.
âOhâ¦ahhâ¦it will take me a couple of hours. Since your boss sent his men into the area, the dealers have been hiding.â
âCall me when you have it.â
âI need money to get powder,â Frankie reminds me.
âIâll make a transfer now.â
I end the call and take a seat on the chair by my desk.
I plan on giving Mandy the weapon so she can take herself out. Itâs the only way to keep Eden safe.
Focusing my attention on my system, I get back to work, searching for Miguel so we can close the chapter on the fucker.
