Harriet let out a contented sigh, smiling softly as she gazed at the tombstone before her. In her arms was their childâZoey and Harriet's child, the same one Harriet had operated on just months ago. The little one was now officially theirs.
"Hey," Harriet mumbled, still smiling as she glanced down. "It's been so long."
She sighed deeply as she crouched down slowly, allowing the child to sit on her lap. "Sophie," Harriet began, her voice soft but filled with warmth. "I'm married now... and I have a child. Zoey and I, we... we have a child."
Harriet looked down at their daughter, smiling as she kissed her on the forehead. "Her name's Sydney. She's ours." She paused for a moment, her smile a mixture of love and nostalgia. "I know it's taken me a while to introduce them to you... I've been so busy with everything else."
Harriet slowly stood, holding Sydney close to her chest. She glanced over at the tombstone beside Sophie's. Zoey, now walking toward her, smiled gently and asked, "Done talking?"
Harriet chuckled softly, pulling Zoey closer by her waist. "Sophie, this is Zoey Fosterâmy wife." Harriet smiled at Zoey before turning her gaze back to the tombstone.
Zoey, surprised but with a soft understanding in her eyes, blinked and looked at Harriet before glancing at the grave. She gently pinched Harriet's cheek and then kneeled in front of Sophie's tombstone. She lit a candle and placed it carefully in front of the grave.
"Hi, Sophie," Zoey said, her voice calm and sincere. "It's nice to finally meet you, even though we never got the chance to." She placed a hand on her chest, tapping lightly where Sophie's heart had once been. "I just wanted to thank you, for giving me the chance to live again." She looked over her shoulder at Harriet, who was swaying gently with their daughter in her arms. "Thanks to youâand your parentsâI'm here. And because of you, I'm with Harriet."
Zoey took a deep breath, her voice softening. "Sophie, don't worry about Harriet. I'll take care of her. I won't hurt her. Rest easy, okay? I know we didn't meet, but I love her, and I always willâthrough this life and beyond." She smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Thank you for saving me. For saving Harriet. We found each other because of you."
Zoey chuckled quietly to herself as she slowly stood up. She glanced upward, her eyes bright. "Don't worry about her anymore. I'll take care of Harriet... and Sydney," Zoey whispered into the air, her words lingering for a moment.
Turning around, Zoey smiled at her wife. "The doctor's been a good wife," she said, walking over and hugging Harriet sideways as they began to leave.
Harriet wrapped her free arm around Zoey's shoulder, gently holding Sydney in the other. "How couldn't I be?" Harriet replied, smiling. "My wife's been giving me all her love."
Zoey shrugged playfully. "You deserve it all, my Harriet," she said, glancing up at her with a smile that spoke volumes of the love she felt.
Harriet stood back, hands on her hips, admiring the portraits she'd hung on the living room wall. What was once a blank space was now filled with cherished memoriesâphotos of her, Zoey, and their little family. A warm smile played on her lips.
"Looks perfect," Zoey murmured as she hugged Harriet from behind.
Harriet nodded, glancing over her shoulder with a smile. "It really does," she replied, turning to face her. "And it's perfect because you're here." She pulled Zoey into a hug.
Zoey laughed, hugging Harriet tightly before looking up at her with a grin. "I love you, Doctor Harriet Pierce," she said, cupping Harriet's face.
Harriet grinned playfully. "Think we can steal a moment while our little one's sleeping?" She wiggled her eyebrows, eyes sparkling.
Zoey blinked in mock surprise, then stepped back with a laugh. "Only if you think you can still carry me," she teased, darting off across the spacious living room. Harriet let out a laugh and dashed after her.
Zoey shrieked as Harriet caught her, lifting her up like a sack of flour. Laughing, Zoey playfully tried to wriggle free, but Harriet's grip held firm.
Panting, Zoey surrendered as Harriet gently laid her down on the couch. "See? Told you I could still carry you," Harriet teased, looking down into Zoey's eyes.
Zoey chuckled, cupping Harriet's cheeks as she gazed up into her hazel eyes. "Yep, still got that energy," she replied, tugging playfully at Harriet's hair.
Harriet sighed, her expression softening. "I love you, sweetheart," she murmured as she leaned in.
Zoey smiled, pulling her into a gentle kiss. "I love you even more," she whispered.
Their kiss deepened, Harriet's hands finding their way to Zoey's thigh, while Zoey's fingers traced along Harriet's shoulders. Just as they were caught up in each other, the baby monitor on the table across from them crackled, and Sydney's soft cries filled the room. Zoey and Harriet looked at each other before Zoey pushed her away, laughing.
Harriet jumped up, nearly tripping in her rush. "I've got it!" she said, sprinting toward the bedroom, leaving Zoey chuckling as she buttoned her shorts and smoothed her hair before heading to the kitchen to prepare Sydney's bottle.
A moment later, Harriet returned, gently swaying with Sydney in her arms, soothing her as she settled on the couch. Zoey came over with the bottle, handing it to Harriet, who smiled down at Sydney as she began to feed.
Harriet laughed softly, leaning close to Sydney's tiny face. "Why do you always wake up just as Mommy and I are about to have a moment, hmm?" she asked in a sweet, playful voice. Sydney cooed as if in response, her little hands reaching up as she drank.
Zoey grinned and sat beside Harriet, taking a few strands of Harriet's hair and tying them in a playful, half-done style. Harriet chuckled as Zoey took out a few cute baby stickers she'd found. "Where did you get those?" Harriet asked, amused.
Zoey shrugged with a laugh. "Freebies from Sydney's formula," she said, sticking a couple on Harriet's cheeks. "Adorable."
Harriet chuckled as Zoey pulled out her phone, snapping a few pictures as Harriet made funny faces. "How do you still manage to look beautiful even while goofing around?" Zoey teased, checking the photos before sharing a couple on social media.
"Runs in the family," Harriet joked, setting down the bottle as Zoey took Sydney in her arms. Harriet wrapped her arm around Zoey's waist, glancing between her wife and their daughter. "So this is what it feels like," she murmured, planting a kiss on Zoey's shoulder.
Zoey tilted her head, curious. "What do you mean?"
Harriet sighed happily, watching them both. "This is everything I ever wantedâyou and our daughter. I never thought I'd feel so complete, but here we are."
Zoey leaned her head on Harriet's chest. "I couldn't ask for anything more, either. This is perfect."
Harriet kissed the top of Zoey's head. "Yes, perfect. I love you both so much," she whispered, holding them close.
Harriet gently stroked Zoey's hair, her heart swelling with gratitude. She thought back to the days when her dreams of family felt so far away, when she'd considered giving up entirely. But Zoey had changed everything, showing her what love and life could truly be.
"I'll always be grateful for you, my love," Harriet whispered, meeting Zoey's gaze. "You've given me everything I could ever ask forâeverything I didn't even know I needed."
Zoey's eyes softened as she leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to Harriet's lips. "And I'll always be grateful for you," she replied. "You're my everything, Doctor Pierce."
As Harriet held them close, she smiled to herself, knowing she'd found her forever in the woman by her side and the little family they'd built together.
