Chase picked up the phone instantly. âWhatâs up? Youâre calling back already; did you miss me that much?â
Belinda sounded a little peeved. âChase, we donât have any beef, do we? Why are you messing with my boyfriend?â
As Chase was heading to the parking garage with his car keys in hand, he laughed out loud at her question. âWe didnât have any beef before, but you just slapped me and publicly called me a jerk. I reckon that counts as beef now. And you may not know this, but I can hold a grudge.â
Belinda furrowed her brows. âI slapped and insulted you because you were harassing me. If you want revenge, take it out on me. Donât mess with my boyfriend; he has no clue whatâs going on.â
Chase chuckled. âHow I seek my revenge really depends on my mood. Anyway, Iâll let you lovebirds be.
Catch you later.â
And with that, he hung up.
Belinda was fuming. She regretted ever falling for such a pretentious gentleman.
But had she heard him correctly? Chase said he would see her later.
He must be joking.
After snapping back to her senses, Belinda handed the phone back to Jacob. âDonât worry, Chase wonât mess with you.â
However, Jacob looked a bit anxious and sounded a tad reproachful. âBelinda, how could you talk to Mr. Larios like that?â
He had assumed that Belinda wanted his phone so she could explain to Mr. Larios that she wasnât actually insulting him. Instead, she had gone and blasted him again. He still had to go back to work.
Belinda blinked at him. âWasnât I standing up for you?â
Jacob sighed. âEven if you were, you canât talk to my boss like that. You donât work at the company anymore, but I still do. What if Mr. Larios fires me because of you? Iâ¦â
Belinda frowned at him.
Realizing he was out of line, Jacob quickly changed his tone. âIâm sorry, Belinda. Iâm not blaming you.
Itâs just that this job wasnât easy to get, and I lost my cool.â
After hearing his apology, Belinda shook her head ruefully. âItâs my fault. I didnât consider your feelings and acted impulsively. Iâve made things difficult for you.
Jacob, worried about losing his job and potentially his hard-won girlfriend, quickly tried to appease her.
âBelinda, donât overthink it. Iâm not blaming you⦠Iâm just concerned about how Iâll support us if I lose my job. Iâm not alone anymore; I have a girlfriend. Without a job or an income, Iâd feel ashamed being with you.â
Belinda adamantly shook her head again. âJacob, you canât think like that. Even if you do lose your job, I wonât look down on you. Donât worry; if Chase fires you because of me, I wonât let you stay unemployed. Iâll ask my uncle to find you a position at his company.â
Jacobâs eyes lit up. âReally? But Iâm not sure if your uncle would accept me.â
Belinda gave Jacobâs shoulder a reassuring pat. âDonât worry! If I accept you, my uncle wonât refuse you. He adores me. He may seem stern and indifferent, but heâll grant any request I make.â
Jacob breathed a sigh of relief. âBelinda, I envy you. With Mr. Blanchet as your uncle, youâre fearless.â
Belinda laughed. âAre you nuts? Whatâs there to be envious of? Once weâre married, my uncle will be your uncle too, right? Heâll treat you well.â
Jacob wrapped his arms around Belinda tightly. âBelinda, thank you. Iâm just an ordinary employee, but you still accepted me as your boyfriend. Iâm truly grateful.â
Belinda didnât struggle or reciprocate the hug, her body stiffening slightly.
âAlright, we should go in now. We canât keep them waiting.â
