Belinda honestly admitted. âYeah. He came with me, and he will take me home when he and Ms.
Gipson leave.â
Jacob couldnât hold back his curiosity anymore. âBelinda, whatâs the deal between you and Mr. Larios?â
Belinda was taken aback and felt a bit embarrassed. âJacob, why the hell would you ask that? Thereâs nothing going on between me and Mr. Larios!â
Jacob insisted. âThen why does he seem to care so much about you? Iâve heard some office chit-chat, saying you joined the company because of Mr. Larios. Is that true?â
Belinda stuttered. âUh⦠yeah, I joined Crescent Society because of him.â
After hearing his girlfriendâs candid response, Jacob felt a bit down, but her honesty gave him some comfort. âBelinda, thank you for being straight with me, but do you still have feelings for Mr. Larios?â
Belinda tried to dodge the question. âJacob, thereâs nothing between him and me anymore. I accepted your pursuit, and Iâm sincere about it. Donât overthink it!â
Jacob felt melancholy. âBelinda, itâs not me overthinking, but I feel like I canât fit into your world. I feel lost; do you get it?â
âJacob, Iâ¦â
Jacob cut her off and said, âBelinda, I want to come and get you right now. If you agree to let me, then Iâll believe youâve chosen me. If not, I wonât bother you anymore.â
Belinda hesitated a bit. âJacob, Iâm sorry, but itâs not a good time today. Theo wants me to spend more time with Ellinor here.â
Jacob managed a bitter smile. âI see. I wonât bother you anymore. Bye!â
Belinda felt a bit dazed after hearing the dial tone. Was she just dumped? But she didnât feel much, nor was she sad. She stood in place, holding the phone for a long time.
Ellinor, who just came out of the restroom, saw her and asked, âWhatâs wrong?â
Belinda shook off her stupor, put away her phone, and shook her head. âNothing; letâs go have some BBQ. Theo bought it especially for you. If we donât hurry, theyâll have eaten it all.â
Ellinor wasnât actually hungry, but she hadnât had BBQ from that place in a long time and felt like trying it again They both returned to the living room and joined the BBQ party.
Bartlett and Balfour had no interest in the BBQ. They sat in chairs by the floor-to-ceiling window, chatting.
âBalfour, youâre not being cool.â Bartlett complained.
Balfour sat there, but his eyes were always on Ellinor, who was on the living room couch. He was concerned about her every move, fearing anything might go wrong.
âWhat did I do?â
Bartlett took a sip of his coffee. âYou didnât tell me Ellinor was staying with you. Iâve been looking for her for days! You didnât even tell me about Ellinor being kidnapped. Is this how you treat your best friend?â
Balfour looked back at him indifferently. âWhatâs your relationship with my sister? Why should I report to you?â
Bartlett retorted. âEllinor and I are friends! You know I have feelings for her. Canât you help me out as a friend?â
Balfour scoffed. âDream on. Youâre not her type.â
Bartlett raised an eyebrow. âIâm not her type, but Theo is? Balfour, are you saying that in your eyes, Iâm worse than your enemy, Theo?
Balfour frowned. âTheo is definitely not her type either, but she likes him.â
