Ellinor was at a loss for words.
This old man was just as irritating as ever.
Marcus, who had been lounging around, suddenly stiffened at the sound of footsteps outside the bedroom.
Ellinor also heard the footsteps, but she didnât hurry. She drawled. âHmm, when you finally remember who I am, Iâll be there to finish you off.â
As she spoke, the bedroom door handle was already being turned from the outside.
Without a doubt, it was Sophia.
Marcus glanced toward the door as his pupils tightened. When he looked back at the woman standing by the bed, she was gone, leaving behind only a gust of wind.
The window was opened again, and the curtains were billowing with the breeze.
By the time Sophia pushed the door open, Marcus as the only one sitting up in bed.
She switched on the light, asking with a hint of surprise, âMarcus, why are you still awake?â
Marcus looked at her, his gaze clear. âWhy arenât you asleep? What are you doing here?â
âI came to check on Tristan. Iâm afraid he might kick off the blankets. The temperatureâs been dropping these days, and I donât want him to catch a cold.â
âHmm. Thank you for your concern.â
In truth, Marcus was used to it. This had been their routine for the past three years.
Although they didnât share a room, Sophia would often get up in the middle of the night to check on things. She came in nearly every night after he had fallen asleep.
Whether she was worried about the child or him catching a cold, he didnât know, but her suspicions were definitely warranted.
Sophia smiled. âDonât mention it. Iâm Tristanâs mother; who else is going to care for him if not me? By the way, Marcus, why donât you close the window at night?â
Marcusâs eyes shifted to the window. âI did, but the wind blew it open. I was just about to get up to close it when you came in.â
Sophia moved toward the window as she spoke. âYouâre not as mobile, so let me close it. Next time, just call me if this happens. Iâm a light sleeper; Iâll hear the phone.â
âThis is a minor matter; I can handle it myself. I donât want to disturb your sleep unnecessarily.â
Sophia closed the window and walked back to the bed, looking at Marcus with a yearning look on her face. âMarcus, you really donât have to be so formal with me. Weâre married, and we have a child together. Even though you canât remember our past, Tristan is the proof of our relationship. Iâm your wife; itâs only natural for me to care for both of you.â
Marcus nodded. âI know, but Iâve already burdened you enough. I donât want to inconvenience you any further.â
Sophia suddenly grasped his hand. âItâs not an inconvenience! Marcus, I donât feel burdened by you at all! I love you, and doing things for you is a reward for me. Marcus, donât feel inferior because of your condition. Iâll find the best doctors for you. Youâll be back on your feet in no time!â
Marcus gently withdrew his hand, casually adjusting Tristanâs blanket. âThank you. I understand your sentiments, but now is not the time to discuss this. You should go back to sleep; donât wake Tristan up.â
Despite her efforts, Marcus remained formal and distant.
Sophia felt a bit disappointed. She had been feeling restless and had trouble sleeping, so she decided to check on Tristan, only to find Marcus awake as well.
She was more than willing to share a room with Marcus; even if they couldnât be intimate due to his condition, she was content just being by his side when he slept.
However, Marcus didnât want to share a room with her, claiming it would disturb Tristanâs sleep.
