Ellinor swiveled her head to look out the window while massaging her temples. âSo, what youâre saying is, this trip⦠was a bust.â
âNot entirely,â replied Balfour.
Ellinorâs disheartened eyes gleamed with hope again. âWhat do you mean?â
Balfour locked eyes with his sister. âI heard Lady Lotusâ voice over a phone call through a friend. I wouldnât mistake that voice. Itâs our motherâs voice. Iâm convinced there canât be two voices in the world with the exact same tone, intonation, and speech patterns.â
Ellinorâs pupils quivered. âReally? Itâs our mother?â
Balfour nodded. âIâm absolutely sure that itâs her.â
Ellinorâs eyes were tinged with a hint of red. âMother⦠Sheâs still aliveâ¦â
Upon seeing his sister like this, Balfour reached out and gently ruffled her hair. âYes, our mother is alive.â
Ellinor looked up at Balfour. âThen why didnât she want to meet you? Does she know you were the one trying to see her?â
Balfour shook his head. âShe doesnât know it was me. I didnât let my friend reveal my identity.â
Ellinor took a deep breath. âYou should let her know. She needs to know that her son is looking for her.
She would definitely want to see you.â
Balfour lowered his gaze. âIf she knew it was me, sheâd be even less likely to meet me.
Ellinor furrowed her brows, not understanding, âWhy?â
Balfour sighed. âOver the years, Iâve been publicly searching for you and our mother worldwide. If sheâs alive, she must know Iâm looking for her. Yet sheâs never tried to contact me and has intentionally avoided my people. Under these circumstances, do you really think she wants to see me?â
Ellinorâs frown deepened. âCould it be⦠could it be that she has amnesia too?â
Otherwise, why wouldnât she come back for Ellinor?
Balfour shook his head again. âI donât believe so. If she had lost her memory, she wouldnât continue to use the pseudonym Lady Lotus for her paintings, and she wouldnât be hiding so effectively.â
Ellinor was silent.
That was true. If her mother had amnesia, she wouldnât be using the pseudonym Lady Lotus.
But if her mom didnât have amnesia, why wouldnât she come back for Ellinor?
She could understand why her mother might not want to return to the Howard family or see anyone from there. But Ellinor wasnât part of the Howard family anymore, so why did her mother disappear like a puff of smoke after leaving her?
Balfour gently pulled his sister into a comforting hug and patted her back. âI know you miss our mother.
She probably holds resentment towards me and the Howard family, and I donât blame her for not wanting to see me.
But for your sake, I wonât give up on trying to communicate with her. Iâll convince her to meet you. I promise.â
Ellinor took deep breaths, trying to calm herself. She didnât want to cry in front of anyone.
Before, she thought she was carefree, full of life, and fearless.
But now she felt vulnerable.
