After stepping out, they settled into Balfourâs SUV to wait for Ellinor and Adrian, only to spot the man theyâd seen dining on the ground floor of the restaurant.
Veronica was anything but calm. Sheâd almost accepted that she might never see her brother again, and now, seeing him alive and well, she could hardly believe her own eyes. She wanted to reach out and touch him, just to be sure.
âDidnât you all see? Thatâs my brother! My brotherâs back! Let me go! I need to ask him where heâs been these past few years!â
Ida, adjusting her gold-rimmed glasses, reminded her in a voice of reason. âWeâve all seen him. But before you go in there, why donât you take a look at whoâs sitting across from him?â
Following Idaâs advice, Veronica took in the rest of the scene and spotted the woman sitting across from her brother. It was the insufferable Sophia, which only made her grit her teeth in anger.
âHmph! I knew it! I knew it had to be Sophiaâs doing! Sheâs been hiding my brother for three years! That witch! Just wait till I get my hands on her!â
Belinda, seeing her uncle again, was also overwhelmed but maintained a cooler head than Veronica.
She tried to placate her.
âDonât rush! Ellinor just texted us to pull back. She must have noticed my uncle, too. Letâs wait for Ellinor to come out, understand the situation, and plan our next move. Didnât you notice? my uncle isnât sitting in a dining chair, but in a wheelchair.â
Veronica had noticed, and it was precisely because she had that she was so eager to confront Sophia.
How did a hale and hearty man end up in a wheelchair?
It was Sophiaâs fault! It had to be!
In order to keep her brother by her side, sheâd actually crippled him.
How could such a venomous woman exist?!
Veronica couldnât hold back any longer. She was about to open the door and storm in when Balfour coughed coldly. âEnough! Keep it down!â
Startled, Veronica sensed the tension in the air and reluctantly sat back down. She turned to Balfour, who sat in the car as steady as a rock. âYou and my brother have always been at odds, so of course you donât care about him.â
With a cold expression, Balfour said, âI donât care about your brother, but I canât ignore Ellinorâs happiness. Now that your brother has shown up, I wonât let him disappear again. For now, we wait for Ellinor to come out and figure things out. If you want to barge in and mess everything up, then go ahead.â
Veronica finally calmed down. She wiped the tears from her eyes and managed to control her impulsive behavior, though she couldnât control her emotions.
From Balfourâs reaction, Ida sensed something was amiss. âMr. Howard, it seems you knew about Theoâs return all along.â
Balfour nodded in affirmation.
Ida frowned. âSo our boss knew too?â
Balfour gave a slight nod. âYes, theyâve already met.â
Everyone was taken aback.
Belinda asked in confusion. âIf Ellinor and my uncle have already met, why didnât my uncle come home with her? Could it be that⦠my uncle has really fallen for that Sophia?â
