But Veronica, always the curious one, leaned in close and whispered, “Ellinor, I heard from Belinda that Sophia showed up earlier. Did you go deal with her?”

Ellinor glanced at Veronica. “She did come, but I didn’t go to deal with her. Now’s not the time.”

Veronica frowned. “Then where did you go, Ellinor? You missed part of the reception.”

Knowing Veronica’s persistent nature, Ellinor patted her cheek. “We can talk later.”

The impatient Veronica wanted to know now and was about to say something.

But Ellinor threw a curve ball to change the subject. “Veronica, have you noticed a man selling balloons around our house lately?”

Veronica paused, then nodded. “I’ve seen him a few times. Why, Ellinor?”

Ellinor narrowed her eyes. “Be careful of him. Don’t let the kids approach him or buy balloons. There have been a lot of child abductions lately. We need to be careful.”

Veronica agreed. “I thought he was strange too. There are never any vendors in our area. But don’t worry too much, Ellinor. No one would dare kidnap any Blanchet child!”

Ellinor gave her a wry smile. “Hmm. Your brother, a grown man, was kidnapped. And you’re still so confident? Be careful!”
