Since Baber was being so uncooperative in the dog cage, Patriciaâs smile faded, and her voice lost its patience. âIâm counting to three. If you donât look at me, Iâll get angry! One, twoâ¦â
Before she could utter âthree, Baber reluctantly raised his head to look at Patricia.
This woman was his nightmare. Whenever she was upset, she would vent her frustrations on him.
Although he was very young and couldnât clearly remember everything, his body still reflexively trembled in fear.
He was terrified of this woman.
After seeing the boy obediently raise his head, Patriciaâs stern face softened a bit, and a gentle smile returned to her face. She reached into the crate to pat Baberâs head. âThatâs a good boy. Thatâs my good son.â
Even this slight physical contact was enough to make Baber shudder. He was terrified that this woman might strangle him any second.
âBaber, why are you looking at Mommy like that? Donât you miss me?â Patricia asked her son with a beaming smile.
Baberâs eyes turned red and were filled with tears of fear. He couldnât speak or move.
Clearly, his reaction did not satisfy Patricia. She lost her patience again and suddenly grabbed hold of Baberâs hair. âIâm talking to you! Do you miss your mommy? Speak!â
Her voice was no longer gentle. It had become a threatening roar.
Baber was truly frightened. Tears flowed down his cheeks, but he couldnât make a sound.

Where was his mommy? Mommy, please save me.
His thoughts were all about Ellinor. He couldnât hold back his tears anymore and cried aloud, âWahâ¦
wuh⦠Mommy..â
He desperately wanted to see Ellinor. It was a childâs instinct to call for their mother in times of fear.
But Patricia seemed to think he was calling for her.
Immediately, a satisfied smile crept onto her face. âYes! Thatâs right! Mommy is here, my good boy.
Stop crying!â
Patricia let go of Baberâs hair and instead wiped the tears off his face as her voice once again softened.
âBaber, do you know how miserable Mommy has been these past few years? Youâre Mommyâs good boy, so you must stand by Mommyâs side and avenge Mommy!â
Baber didnât understand what she was saying. All he knew was that his fear was growing.
âCome on, good boy. Call out to Mommy again, and Mommy will let you out of the dog cage, okay?â
Patricia coaxed Baber with a bright smile.
Baber looked at Patricia with fear and unfamiliarity as he continued to cry. âIâm⦠Iâm scaredâ¦â
Patricia cupped his little face and cooed. âOh, donât be scared. Mommyâs here. With Mommy here, my Baber doesnât need to be scared of anything.â
Baber suddenly remembered what Ellinor had once taught him and his siblings as he looked at the seemingly crazy Patricia. Ellinor said he had to endure, pretend to compromise, and not confront real villains head-on. There would always be a way out.
As he thought about this, he felt as if Ellinorâs encouraging voice was ringing in his ears, and his heart suddenly calmed down a bit. He sniffled and stopped crying. âMom⦠Mommy, I want to go out⦠Can you let me out?â
