Ivy scowled, feeling a wave of revulsion as Clara spewed her venomous words. But, in the end, she reluctantly nodded.
âI made the offer, and Iâll stand by my word. Youâve essentially met both my requests, so I can wire you the full amount. Letâs put an end to all this tiresome business, shall we?â
Claraâs ears perked up, defiance etched on her face. âHow much is she paying you? Youâre so eager to do her bidding? Ignorant foolsâ¦â
But Blondie was not one to take an insult lying down. He lashed out with a slap that echoed through the room.
âYou, a woman who canât even scrape together a few thousand, dare to mock our new employer?â
The force of the slap sent Clara staggering, her composure teetering on the edge as she fought the urge to flee.
âSheâs giving us three million! Not like you, pinching pennies! No wonder you canât make it big. Youâre destined to be a D-lister for life!â
Clara, now frantic, retorted, âAh! Who do you think you are? What do you know? How dare you judge me! Shameless cur, following anyone who waves a bit of cash your way! What do you know?â
Clara was no longer their boss, and Blondie and his gang had no reason to put up with her insolence.
Her harsh words were too much to bear, and with full force, Blondieâs slap sent Clara tumbling to the ground, a pained grunt escaping her lips.
âAh-You lunatics⦠How dare you lay hands on me! Wait until I get out of here; none of you will escape!â
Even in such a wretched state, Claraâs pride had her issuing threats.
Ivy, on edge, worried when Balfour would appear and terrified they would discover she was broke, felt anxiety engulfing her.
âEnough, no need for violence. If it werenât for capturing her, we wouldnât be getting Ivyâs hefty bounty today!â With a mocking smile, Jack added, âWho knows, today might just be the highlight of her pathetic life. Three million, her most valuable moment yet.â
Clara had not anticipated Ivy would offer such a high price to have her taken. Where did she get all that money? Three million to her family last time, and now another three million?
âPtooey, you idiots actually believe her? She was penniless when she got kicked out of the Dunhill family! Rather than wait for her imaginary three million, you might as well take my fifty thousand and leave. Just watch. Youâll end up with nothing!â
Clara, her mouth stained with blood from the slap, looked down on this group of greedy thugs.
âDo you really think everyone is as foolish as you? Ivy is nothing like you small-time performers. Her net worth is beyond your wildest dreams. Plus, sheâs a quicker payer than you. Sheâs already deposited a million in our account as a down payment. Unlike you, who thinks about installments for a mere few thousand!â
Blondieâs mouth ran faster than his brain, yelling out the whole truth.
Ivy kept silent, though her back was slick with sweat. She feared they would find out she was, in fact, out of money.
Clara, miserable herself, had no intention of letting Ivy off the hook. Even if she genuinely did not have a dime, what good would it do to expose Ivy in front of these thugs?
Both of them were tied up. If they learned there was no money coming from Ivy, would they show mercy to her? No! They might just do away with both of them!
Ivy could not fathom Claraâs thought process. All she hoped was for Balfour to show up soon and whisk her away from this nightmare.
For some reason, she steadfastly believed that Balfour would sense something was wrong and come to her rescue just in time.
It was this belief alone that had sustained her thus far.
