Before he could get the words out, the producer clamped a hand on his arm, as though he was trying to pluck a feather from a lionâs mane.
As expected, Balfourâs icy gaze swept over them, and they both dipped their heads in unison.
âDo I need you to teach me how to do things?â
âThe director didnât mean that, Mr. Howard. You know heâs got nothing but the movie on his mind. He doesnât get all the twists and turns; thatâs on us. Just let us know what you need.â
Balfour didnât respond.
He was pondering how to flush out the suspect.
Despite claims that many in the crew had issues with Ivy, he knew she wasnât that kind of person.
The incidents before had compelled people to take a stand against Ivy, not because they genuinely disliked her.
Moreover, the alleged frictions were minor and not sufficient to justify an attack on Ivyâs life.
The entire crew shared a collective fate- oneâs glory was everyoneâs glory, and oneâs loss was everyoneâs loss.
Who could benefit from harming the lead actress?
The average crew member surely couldnât; they depended on the steady operation of the production for their paychecks. That left the supporting cast.
Balfour decided to start with the actress playing the second female lead.
âWhoâs your second lead? Whatâs her relationship with Ivy?â
Balfour tapped on the table and asked the two men opposite him, but he wasnât expecting their reaction to be as if they had just swallowed something foul at the mention of the second lead.
Balfour frowned. âSheâs not here?â
They shook their heads. âNo, itâs not that. The second lead is the bane of our entire crew right now.
There isnât much between her and Ivy, but sheâs got a problem with everyone, and sheâs the person everyone in the crew dislikes the most. Especially since sheâs the one who fabricated the negative press about bullying in our crew.â
Balfourâs frown deepened. âWhy am I only hearing about this now?â
They exchanged glances. âEven though she plunged the whole crew into this negative spotlight, she got what she wanted out of it. We donât think she would have a reason to harm Ivy. Itâs a high risk with no clear benefit.â
Balfour found their naivety exasperating.
Just because this woman had gotten what she wanted, did it mean she wouldnât harm others? People like her had insatiable greed.
âDid you ever consider that, even if she got what she wanted for now, her appetite might be a bottomless pit? If sheâs done it once, she might do it again. Of course, she would target the lead actress, because she wants more.â
Enlightened by Balfourâs perspective, they realized how absurd it was to have immediately ruled out Diana the previous day, especially for such ridiculous reasons!
âIndeed, after Ivyâs accident yesterday, she was spouting all these noble-sounding statements, trying to get the whole crew on her side. Later, a bit player exposed her, and thinking about it now, it really doesnât add up.â
Balfour had little else to say to them, merely instructing them to recount the events of the previous day.
âHeh, it seems like sheâs even more worried than you two, huh?â
After listening, Balfour made that single remark and fell silent.
The two men, feeling guilty, hung their heads.
Following Ivyâs accident and the subsequent events, their performance had been far from stellar, and Balfourâs dismissive demeanor was entirely justified.
âUh⦠It was our oversight.â
