âOuch!â Ivy couldnât help but cry out as the doctorâs hand neared the swollen area.
The doctor, on the other hand, seemed relieved as if a weight had been lifted, âLooks like itâs just a sprain, no pain in the surrounding areas. Still, letâs get an X-ray to be sure. But youâll need to take it easy for the next few days, no putting weight on it, alright? Mr. Howard, you must make sure your wife doesnât use that leg, okay?â
Balfour nodded solemnly, his face etched with concern. He would do everything in his power to prevent Ivyâs injury from getting worse.
Relief washed over Ivy when the doctor confirmed it wasnât a fracture.
Resting at home for a few days beat being laid up for months.
After the X-ray, Balfour went to get her prescription. It was then that Mara arrived, carried in by Mark who seemed to be having the worst luck.
Mark felt like he was lugging around a sack of potatoes, with Mara not cooperating at all. She lay across his back lifeless, as if she were a zombie.
If he hadnât been holding her arms tightly, she probably would have tumbled to the ground. Didnât she realize she could hurt herself even more? Her leg was already injured, and he was wary of touching it â
after all, she was a woman he didnât know, and it was important to maintain a certain distance.
â
But Mara had her reasons. She almost wished she would fall and actually twist her ankle. If she showed up at the hospital without a scratch, wouldnât her ruse be exposed?
As long as the only person she had to deceive was Balfour, she could probably get away with it, provided those two old biddies didnât follow them.
Maraâs worries were premature; as she was taken to see the doctor, Balfour wasnât there. He was busy picking up Ivyâs medicine.
Mark accompanied her, and when the doctor asked which leg was injured, Mara nonchalantly pointed to her left leg.
The doctor frowned, âMs. Lewis, are you sure? Your leg looks fine to me. Where does it burt?â
There was no swelling â how could it be a sprain?
Mara scowled, clearly annoyed, âExcuse me, are you questioning me? If I say it hurts, it hurts. Why would I come to the hospital if I wasnât in pain? If you canât figure it out, maybe you should get another doctor. Itâs ridiculous incompetent doctors shouldnât be lecturing patients.â
The poor doctor had the misfortune of working late and dealing with such an uncooperative patient, and now he was being accused of incompetence without even having a chance to explain.
Mark félt bad for the doctor and cautiously touched Maraâs back, suggesting, âIf youâre not in pain, letâs just go home and you can take a rest.â
Mara rolled her eyes dramatically. âAre you deaf or something? I said my foot hurts. If thereâs no external injury, then take an X-ray and check for a sprain on the inside! Alyssa sent you to look after me. Is this how you take care of me? Youâd better be careful explaining this to her when we get home!â
Mark, being the good-natured fellow he was, apologized to the doctor and asked if they could please just get the X-ray done.
âThis is unnecessary drama, miss. If it were a sprain, there would be a visible swelling on your skin. An X-ray is for fractures, and youâre insisting on an internal sprain when thereâs no pain or swelling. This is justâ¦â
Mara cut him off with a cold laugh, slamming her hand on the doctorâs desk, âI want to spend the money on this X-ray. Are you going to do it or not?â
Fearing Maraâs temper might turn on the doctor, Mark hurriedly interjected, âDoctor, could you please just arrange the X-ray for her? We can discuss the results afterwards. If thereâs nothing wrong, weâll leave straightaway.â
Seeing their resolve to pay, the doctor reluctantly agreed to the X-ray.
