Francis couldnât help but revealed her the truth. âIf it werenât for Nolan swooping in just in time, you mightâve been in a real bad spot. I donât know whoâs behind this, but youâve been way too careless.â
Regina was speechless, blindsided by the low blow someone had dealt her. No wonder she had felt all woozy climbing the stairs to that room, her brain felt like a lump of wet concrete, unable to function properly. She managed to ask, dry-mouthed, âSo it wasnât all in my head? Nolan really was here?
Where is he now?â
For some reason, she felt that Nolan would have the full scoop on what had happened.
Sighing inwardly, Regina knew her dadâs perspective would always have a tint of bias, what with his new family and all.
âWhatâs the point in chasing after him? He said you were just friends, nothing more. There were only the two of you in that room; did he try to harass you?â Francisâ words were laced with irritation, which made Regina furrow her brow and cut him off. âPlease donât talk about him like that. How could he be that kind of person? You said it yourself â I might not even be here talking to you, sound and healthy, without his help. Dad, how could you say so about the man who saved me? Please, I just want to clear some things. up with him, and here you are speaking so foully.â
Seeing his darling daughter defend Nolan right after waking up riled up Francis even more.
âDo you trust a stranger over your own father?
Reginaâs frown deepened as she still felt a bit unwell. âThatâs not what I mean, Dad. Ple tell me who was there. I need to get to the bottom of this myself.â
âTry to think about it. Have you been targeted at work recently? What else could have. ruffled someoneâs feathers enough to come after you? Not only do you need to dig deep but Iâll also uncover who dared to mess with my daughter. I wonât let them get away with it.â Francis growled with a vengeance.
Regina interjected, âDad, we live in a society governed by law, not fists.â
He sighed, âThis journalist gig of yours, look where itâs gotten you. Nothing but pains and injuries. Iâve always said itâs not for you, but you wouldnât listen. Otherwise, you wouldnât be the target of dangerâ
Regina turned away, knowing her father would seize any chance to persuade her to quit journalism, but how could she give up her dream just like that?
âEnough, Dad. I need to rest. Itâs late, and you should head home and get some sleep.â Francis was almost mad at his stubborn daughter. But seeing her exhausted face and pale lips, his anger resigned.
âHow could I possibly leave you on your own after what happened today? I upgraded your room to a private suite, and Iâll be right next door if you need me.â he said with concern.
Regina knew about her dadâs picky sleeping habits; he wouldnât rest well in any room that was not his own. She tried to persuade him with a bit hesitation, âDad, Iâm not feeling that bad anymore. Theyâve got nurses and doctors in the hospital. Look at the shades under your eyes, Dad; you havenât been resting well, have you? Please go home and get some sleep.â
