Madeline couldnât stand her pitiful act, and whatâs more, the fact that men fell for it every single time.
âArenât you supposed to be this righteous journalist? If you pleasing men so much, Iâll make sure you leave this world surrounded by them.â
Thinking maliciously of Reginaâs downfall brought a genuine smile to Madelineâs face.
âJust lay low for a while and donât contact me. When youâre ready, just find any payphone and call me, got it?â
Madeline was about to leave when Domingo followed her, âHey, Madeline, when can Dad see you again?â
She clicked her tongue in annoyance, âI told you, donât reach out unless I do first. You know Iâm staying with the Tanners, right? If you donât want to cause trouble for me and Mom, just stay put here.â
Domingo nodded quickly, âI get it. That manâs still around, so your mom canât just come back to me.
When the Tannerâs eldest daughter gets into trouble and theyâre too busy to care, Iâll bring you both back. Donât worry, Iâve wronged your mother before, but from now on, I wonât. I promise to take good care of you both!â
Madeline wasnât sure when Domingo started planning all this, but neither she nor her mother wanted to return to him. Theyâve had enough from him. Plus, with her mother now carrying a Tanner child, Reginaâs demise would conveniently pave the way for a new heir to the Tanner fortune.
Of course, she didnât share these thoughts with Domingo. She still need to use him, so jus let him believe what he wanted.
After settling this matter, Madeline felt relieved returning to the Tanner residence. She immediately checked on Imogen, concerned about her unborn brother, her future hope.
Seeing her daughter return home beaming, Imogen was puzzled, âWhere have you been? You havenât been home much, and you missed a dinner party I wanted us to attend together. Everyone brought their children, you know. Yet, when I wanted to bring my own daughter, you werenât interested.â
Madeline knew she had been out frequently to deal with Domingo and the matter at hand.
âMom, I know you want the best for me. Havenât I been networking with those elite ladies? Thatâs why Iâve been out so much. You always said I should build good relationships with them.â
Relieved that her daughter wasnât just fooling around, Imogen relaxed, âNow that Regina is married to Nolan, thatâs settled. You need to stop thinking about him. Heâs not for you, understand? Letâs meet more suitable young men. Remember Mrs. Lawsonâs son who came by last time? Tall, handsome, and quite the gentleman.â
