Theo swiveled his head towards Balfour with a hint of surprise at his sudden change of attitude. You sure you can handle this?â
Balfour strode over to the bed, where Baber lay. âWhy not?â He said this as he glanced at Baber. âThe kid is our responsibility as the Howard family. Youâve just been caught in the crossfire.â
Theo squinted as a hint of confusion appeared in his eyes.
Up till now, Balfour had been pushing Theo to spend more time with Patricia. Whatâs up with the sudden switch?
Patricia frowned at Balfourâs suggestion âBalfour, what brings you upstairs? Donât you need to go down and knock back a couple of drinks with Bartlett and the others?â
Balfour shot Patricia a quick look. âLet Theo go down and join them. Heâs the man of the hour.â
Patricia blinked, clearly understanding what Balfour meant by âman of the hourâ
Her face fell, but she wasnât about to back down She didnât want Theo getting cozy with that nasty Ellinor.
âBalfour, Baber needs Theo.â She continued. âHeâs just starting to cool down a bit. If Theo leaves, Iâm afraid he might get worked up and his fever will spike again.â
Balfour didnât respond to Patricia but turned his attention to the sick child instead. âBaber, can I stay here with you?â He asked gently.
Baber, who hadnât fallen asleep, blinked in discomfort. âBalfourâ¦â
Balfour leaned in a little closer to the child. Yes, itâs me. Iâll stay with you.â
Baber nodded obediently. âStay with Balfourâ¦â
Only after the child agreed did Theo stand up. He clapped Balfour on the shoulder. âThanksâ
Balfour nodded. âGo on, Ellinor is waiting for you downstairs.â
âAlright.â
With Balfour there, Theo felt reassured. He took off down the stairs, worried that Ellinor might feel lonely or get upset if he kept her waiting too long.
Patricia, however, was far from pleased. She tried to catch up with Theo, calling after him, âTheo, wait, let me see you out!â
âStay put!â
Balfour had foreseen this and stopped her with a firm voice.
âBut Balfour, I just want to see Theo off.â Patricia tried to explain.
âSave it, Patricia! Heâs going down to see his wife; he doesnât need you to see him off. Besides, your kid is still sick. Right now, Baber needs his mom more than anything else Balfour reminded her sternly.
âButâ¦â Patricia began, still unwilling to let go.
âBalfour! This kid was adopted by Theo and me together. We are both Baberâs guardians, and we both need to take responsibility for him!â
âIf you canât take care of this child properly, Iâll help you find a pair of parents who can!â Balfour warned her sternly.
Patricia was taken aback by Balfourâs stern warning. She knew that Balfour always kept his word, even if it meant going against her wishes.
