The Shot

I kissed him.

He responded almost immediately and in no time I was the one on the floor. My hands ran through his curls and I nearly moaned at just the feel of them against my fingers. I was about to open my mouth to allow him better access but Alexander pulled back.

His eyes were black again but this time I knew it was from lust. Not whatever demon had possessed him a moment ago. He pecked my lips before pulling me into a seated position, he sat beside me and I absentmindedly grabbed a hold of his hand, interlocking it with mine.

Only when he glanced down at our hands then looked up at me did I realise what I had done, I was going to let go but his thumb started rubbing circles on my skin and I knew – it was okay.

"What was that, Alexander?" I questioned.

"A kiss." He smirked, obviously dodging my real question.

I rolled my eyes, "Please tell me."

Alexander sighed, running his other hand through his hair. As he opened his mouth ready to respond to me, his eyes darted to the door Abel walked in and I wanted to curse him for it.

"Are you back?" He asks, clearly not realising what he had just interrupted.

"Yeah," Alexander responds.

Abel looked at me, "Did you...?" He trailed off.

"See his 'episode,' yeah. That's why I'm here."

"Come with me." Abel interrupted.

My eyebrows scrunched and I looked over at Alexander and he nodded, "I'm coming back for you." I said to him, as I got to my feet.

Abel led me out the room walking up the stairs taking me to another room in this house.

"Thank you for bringing him back. I had business to attend to and I couldn't make it back in time. When he's like that I can't get through to him. All I see is darkness,"

Because his own eyes are dark I thought, "So I never know what's happening, I just know that the switch has been flipped."

"The switch?"

"Yes, that's what we call it we don't know what exactly is wrong with him but we're trying to help him."

"You and Axel?"

"Yes. I needed to get you away because he's more fragile after an episode, didn't want you to say the wrong thing – which could be anything really – and he lashes out, flipping again." He explained and I nodded in understanding.

"I don't know what could have upset him, he was over at my place a few hours ago. I was confused when Nathaniel called me over because I had just seen him and he was fine."

"The other side of him has been making many appearances since your disappearance. Why would he be mad after seeing you? I would think that with you back he'd be much happier."

"He wanted me to move in here but I convinced him to give me a little more time. He agreed, he didn't look upset at all maybe displeased but definitely not upset."

"You're not moving in?"

"You knew?"

"Of course. We had your room set up from the second day you were gone. He was convinced to never let you out of his sight." Abel rubbed his beard, "Well then his anger makes perfect sense."

"Not to me, it doesn't. I'm just not ready to move in here, I'm not ready to be a part of this Pack let alone be Luna." I whisper.

"Why not?"

"I'm not a killer. I can't do what you guys do. How am I supposed to lead if I don't live by the same morals you do?"

Abel laughed, "You're Luna. You're not expected to kill."

"Then what? Should I just be a trophy? I think not. I'm going to have to be Alexander's equal. That entails killing. I can't do it like he does."

"That's what I'm saying. You don't have to be like him, you're not supposed to be like him. You're supposed to have compassion, you're supposed to keep this Pack level just like you're supposed to keep him level. You are the balance we need. Right now it is all killing and a bit haywire but I know as soon as you step in, it'll all balance out smoothly." He smiled.

Abel's words brought a slight hum into my heart, I was shocked he thought so highly of me. Surprised he truly believed in me so much so that he thought I'd be able to be a positive light and influence to this Pack.

"That's really kind of you to say, thank you, Abel."

He smiled.

"Where is Axel?"

Abel chuckled, "Off on his travels, he said that he has been here far too long."

"Where does he get the money?" I scoff.

"Alex."

I don't even know why I bothered asking because that is the response I expected.

"Of course." I roll my eyes, "He doesn't strike me as a hard worker."

"He's not." Abel quips and I laugh.

Sobering up I ask the one question I've been dying to know the answer to, "When the switch flips, is it his wolf that takes over?"

"No." He shakes his head.

Abel reaches out his hand and I grabbed it, he brought me to my feet and let go. He spun around and led us out of this room and started walking the halls of Alexander's home.

"Then what is it?" I continue.

"I don't know."

Abel stopped in front of a door and told me to open it, I gave him a sceptical glance but he just nudged me forward without saying a word. I opened the door and was greeted by a fully furnished room. It had a bed right in the centre with two bedside tables, each holding a lamp. Behind the tables were full-length mirrors, the tables had a mirror reflection and the headboard was silver.

The dresser was the same as the bedside tables and the top of the walls silver the bottom white, the floor was a white fluffy carpet that I knew I'd stain and dirty very quickly. To the right was a door I learned was the bathroom and on the left side was another door that was the walk-in closet.

It was stoked up with clothes that were all in my size. If it weren't so clean you would swear I live here already. It was absolutely perfect, I loved everything about it. It was nothing like my room at home or like I would pick out but it worked perfectly. I loved it.

Realising I was alone I sat on the bed and nearly sank to the bottom it was so soft. I then lay down and I felt at peace. I could picture myself here, I could actually see it so much clearer now that I was in here. I got off the bed and walked toward the window, gazing outside all I could see was the vast green of the lands and the forest. I heard the door opened and I knew it was him from his rain and ocean scent.

"Do you like it?" Is the first thing he asks, "Nathaniel said you'd hate it."

I chuckle, "He's righ  –" I didn't complete the sentence, afraid it might set him off so I rephrased it, "I love it, yes, it's nothing like what I would pick out but I really love it. Thank you"

"Are you going to do that all the time?"

"Do what?" I turned to face him.

"Watch what you say because you're afraid the switch will flip." He sighed.

"Until we figure out a way to stop it, yeah."

"Stop?" He laughed, "This has been happening for years now."

"You didn't know me then," I whispered.

"You think you can stop them?" He scoffed.

"Yes," I said confidently.

"I'd love to see you try." He folded his arms.

"That's exactly what I'm going to do Alexander. I'm not going to stop until I've gotten to the bottom of it."

"All the way from the North Pack?" He looks at me through his lashes.

"Alexander..." I drawl, knowing what he was getting at.

He sat on the bed, "What is it going to take?"

"Time." I sat beside him, placing my hand on his knee.

"We don't have any –"

His sentence was interrupted by the sound of a window breaking, soon after it broke I felt pain right at the back of my head. I dropped to the floor and let out loud agonising scream after scream after scream. Tears blurred my vision and pain filled my head and my eyes shut as Alexander was yelling out something.

"...jah! Shit... Help... need som... shot... medics... quick... -"
