Bella:
"Now that is done, over to the next," Sue said, then she cocked her head towards the door. "Come on, hybrid."
My legs got moving as she headed to the door. I wanted to ask what the next was, but I was scared because I was already on the edge with her, and every single thing I did seemed to annoy her.
"With the way you are walking, we will not meet our mission requirements. There is a full moon coming tonight, and we need it to complete our ritual."
My mouth fell ajar when I heard this and my heart thumped in my chest-not because I was following her at full speed, but because of the "ritual."
"You are releasing Enzo tonight?" The question fell out of my mouth before I could stop it.
Sue stopped in her tracks.
"Fewer questions and more moving, hybrid!" Then she came to a halt in front of a room.
She opened it to reveal a large hall. She walked into it and I followed as she headed for a wall opposite the room, opening a glass casing with a red button. The moment she slammed her hand on it, a siren went off. Before I could say Jack, the room was filled with every single vampire living in the den.
"Get in line," Sue ordered me, and I took a step back, standing in line with every vampire.
She cleared her throat.
"We all know why we are here," she began, and I glanced around, catching sight of Lyra and Mabel by the end on my left.
"Tonight will mark a great time for us in history. Because if we play our cards right, then we will have Enzo with us!" They chanted as she said this.
"Silence!" she commanded, and the entire room fell silent at once. "We do not have much time, so we have to go tonight."
When she said this, she began to point people from the crowd, and at the end, we were about twelve standing in front of her.
"You, you,..." she began, assembling people to different packs. Then she stopped in front of Lyra, Mabel, and me. "As for the three of you, you'll be going to the Frost Pack tonight."
Something in me knew this was going to be a terrible mission, but I didn't want to speak because all eyes were already on me.
"Now that the groups are set, you should know your assignment."
Instead of facing the entire crowd, she glared at me as she spoke. "Your mission is to get me the blood of four werewolves from each pack. One adult male, one adult female, one male child, and one female child."
My mind was going through a mental breakdown at this point, but I had to compose myself. Ryder's words echoed in my head, and for the first time, I truly believed I was foolish.
I was about to shed blood, and it was from the Frost Pack. At least I didn't have to go to the Rune Pack, I tried to convince myself.
"This should be easy," Lyra said, cracking her fingers while I tried to compose myself on the outside.
When Sue saw I wouldn't crack, I think she started to believe I was caught up in whatever magic it was that their witch did to me. She knew I had mischief up my sleeves, so being extra careful was a must for her.
"With that being said, the rest of you should make preparations for the ritual."
The crowd dispersed in the twinkle of an eye. Other vampires began to make portals to leave, but Sue stopped us.
"Hybrid, you are in charge of this operation and if anything goes wrong, then you have yourself to blame. Is that understood?" She asked, and I nodded.
Then she gave me a hard pat on my back. Lyra opened a portal for us, and I waited for both her and Mabel to walk through it before I followed. In no time, we made it to the Frost Pack.
"This is going to be easy," Mabel said as she spotted cars passing by from where we stood.
My mind was still wrapped around the fact I had to prey on werewolves.
"Do we have to kill them?" I asked both of them, who shrugged at me.
They made their way down the bushy path of the forest, trying to get to the roadside.
"Sue said she wanted their blood, so can't we just get their blood and not actually kill them?"
Lyra groaned the moment we made it out to the road.
"If you do not want to kill the stupid wolves, then we won't kill them!" She said in a loud tone, which made it clear I was getting on her nerves.
Mabel glared at the both of us.
"I am sensing some tension, so you both need to calm the fuck down. We just need to find an unsuspecting family, and we are done," she said, and I nodded.
"Well, if we are going to keep them alive, then we need something to collect the blood, and we didn't bring anything,
so."
"I'll get something. Open a portal for me and do not close it." She glanced at Mabel when I said this.
"She is in charge, so you have to do what she says," Mabel said to Lyra, and I heaved a sigh of relief as she sided with
me.
Lyra had her emotions off, so she didn't give two shits about people dying, but Mabel was still a little human.
"Well, you better be quick, because we need to get this done, and if you do not.."
"Just open the portal already," I said to her, and she groaned, slapping her hand against a rock.
I rushed into the portal, coming out of the den. One thing I noticed about the vampires was their ability to craft portals real quick. They had mastered it even better than Hazel. It took Hazel time to open portals, and when she did, we ended up falling into free space before we reconnected with the side we aimed to be at, but with these vampires, it was like walking through a door from one room to another.
Speaking of rooms, I was in the kitchen of the den. I quickly opened the storages and grabbed four jars stacked into one another. Then I walked back into the portal to find Lyra and Mabel still standing by the roadside with no sign of prey.
In that moment, headlights flooded the road from afar. Lyra turned at once, then she raced towards it before racing back to us.
"Our target is here. Get ready," she said, and I took a deep breath, trying to convince myself it wasn't so bad since they were not planning to kill anybody.
As the car closed in, Mabel rushed out to the middle of the road. The driver, who didn't see her on time, tried to apply the brakes, screaming at her, but his brakes failed, and the car tires screeched badly on the road. The man tried to swerve to dodge Mabel, but he ended up swerving into a ditch by the roadside.
"Good job!" Lyra said to Mabel as we rushed towards them.
By now, my heart was thumping in my chest, and I prayed it wouldn't be someone I knew or someone who could recognize me. As soon as we got to the scene, Lyra went for the front door, pulling it open.
The driver groaned in pain, but Lyra didn't care. She grabbed his shoulder, pulling his head up from the steering wheel, then she twisted it, causing him to pass out. Mabel did the same with the woman. Then I opened the back seat, catching the eyes of two younglings.
They both stared at me with fear dripping from their eyes.
"I'm sorry," I muttered as I twisted both their necks, leaving them unconscious.
Lyra and Mabel took one jar each, then they cut open the wrists of their victims, draining their blood into the jar. When they were done, I gave them the remaining jars as I couldn't do it.
"You have to toughen up if you want to last here," Lyra said to me as I watched her slit the tiny wrist of the girl just a little above the pink bracelet she had on.
"Maybe next time," I said to her.
While they were at it, I placed tiny bites on the necks of their victims to heal their wounds.
"Done." They announced, then I walked over to the children, biting them slightly and filling them with my blood.
"What are you doing? Let's go," Lyra said, and I pulled away from the kids, shutting the door.
At that moment, we saw another headlight flash in our direction.
"We need to get out of here, quickly," Lyra said, but then my legs became glued to the ground as that familiar scent hit me...
