Blackened trees twisted upwards, their branches sharp as daggers, clawing at the sky. Even the air felt heavier, thicker, as if dark magic had soaked into every inch of ground we walked on. Every step forward made my skin prickle, the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end.

The familiar path was gone, replaced by something that felt alive-and deeply wrong. Clara was the first to speak. She held her hand out, feeling the magic pulsing in the air. "The nature here... it's changing." Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried a pressure that made everyone go still.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my gaze darting over the terrain, scanning for threats. We couldn't afford surprises, not this close to Eden's stronghold. Clara's eyes narrowed.

"It's weakening. But that doesn't make sense. If anything, Eden should be strengthening it, but I guess his dark magic is corroding everything." Mascot's jaw tightened, his eyes fixed on the dark horizon. "It means he's expecting us. Or worse-he's set a trap."

Jacob scoffed, his voice laced with irritation. "Of course he has. And I wonder if anyone here knew more than they're letting on."

Mascot didn't respond, but his grip on his weapon tightened. The tension between him and Jacob had died down a little bit, but it didn't stop Jacob from prodding Mascot. We were too close to let petty conflicts tear us apart, but with each step closer to Eden it seemed the pressure was heightening hidden emotions.

I stepped between them, my hands raised in a gesture of peace. "We're here to end this, not to pick at each other."

Jacob's eyes met mine, his expression amused but there was a hardness in his eyes. "Are we, Tasha? Or are some of us just here to settle personal scores?"

Ethan looked away, his face shadowed. "I have my reasons. But I don't expect you to understand."

My chest tightened as I glanced between the three men. "Jacob, Mascot saved my life, likewise Ethan. He saved all of us more than once." My voice softened as I added, "Let's not forget that."

Jacob's mouth twisted into a grim line, but he said nothing. The silence stretched, thick with unspoken accusations and hurt, until finally, Clara cleared her throat. "We're wasting time," she said, her tone urgent. "The longer we wait, the more dangerous it gets." She glanced at Seth, who had been silent throughout, his face a mask of determination. "Seth, Ethan and I will go check out the lay of the land. Tasha, Mascot, Jacob... you focus on Eden."

Mascot nodded, though his gaze remained distant. "We'll meet up at the gate. And if we're not back in an hour..." His words trailed off, but the implication was clear.

Clara's expression softened, a rare moment of vulnerability crossing her face. "We'll be back. All of us." With a final nod, she, Ethan and Seth disappeared into the shadows, leaving the three of us standing in the eerie stillness.

I turned to Jacob and Mascot, taking a deep breath. "Let's go." We moved in silence, each of us lost in our own thoughts as we picked our way through the twisted landscape. The silence weighed on me, pressing down like the dark magic around us.

Finally, I couldn't hold back any longer. "Mascot," I began, glancing over at him. "You've served Eden before. You know him better than any of us. If there's anything-anything-you haven't told us, we need to know now."

Mascot's jaw tightened, and he looked away, his face shadowed with something I couldn't quite place. Regret? Shame? I couldn't tell. "There are things you don't understand, Tasha," he said quietly. "Eden... he was more than just a master to me. He was once someone I trusted."

Jacob snorted, crossing his arms. "Oh, so now it all makes sense. You're still holding onto loyalty to a monster."

Mascot's eyes flashed with anger, and he took a step forward, his body tense. "Watch your mouth, Jacob."

"Or what?" Jacob shot back, his voice rising. "You'll betray us just like you did back then? How do we know you're not planning to hand us over the second we reach Eden?"

"Stop it, both of you!" My voice cut through the turmoil, sharp and unforgiving. I stepped between them, feeling the aura of their anger around me. "This isn't helping. We're a team. We're here to fight Eden, not each other."

Mascot took a deep breath, his eyes closing for a moment before he met my gaze. "You're right. But there's something you need to know."

I nodded, urging him to continue. "Then tell us, Mascot. We're running out of time."

He hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground. "Eden... he's not just powerful. He's cruel. Manipulative. He knows how to get inside your head, make you question everything you know. He'll use your fears against you, twist your thoughts until you don't know who you are anymore."

Jacob crossed his arms, his voice cold. "So that's it? You're warning us that he's good at mind games? We already knew that."

Mascot's fists clenched, his knuckles turning white. "You don't understand. He doesn't just manipulate-he destroys from the inside out. I saw it happen to different people. Packs." The raw pain in his voice made me pause, and I felt a pang of sympathy despite everything.

Mascot had experienced more evil than any of us, and though he never talked about it, the weight of that scar was clear in his every word, every action. Jacob was silent, his gaze narrowing as he studied Mascot. For a moment, I thought he might say something harsh, but then he just nodded, his jaw clenched.

"Fine," Jacob muttered. "But if you're hiding anything else-"

"I'm not," Mascot interrupted, his voice firm. "Everything I've done, I've done for this pack. For this group. For Tasha." His gaze lingered on me, and I felt a warmth spread through my chest, a brief respite from the cold fear gnawing at me.

The look in his eyes was intense, filled with a depth of emotion he rarely let show. It made my heart race, made me feel like maybe-just maybe-there was something worth fighting for beyond this endless war.

But before I could say anything, a low rumble shook the ground beneath our feet, and I whipped around, my heart pounding. Ahead of us, the twisted grounds gave way to the looming outline of Eden's stronghold, a dark fortress stood tall against the stormy sky. The gates were massive, wrought iron twisted into snarling beasts that seemed almost alive.

I swallowed hard, feeling a surge of fear and determination rise within me. This was it. The place where everything would be decided. I glanced at Jacob and Mascot, their faces pale but determined, and felt a flicker of hope. We had come this far together, against all odds. Now it was time to finish what we had started.

As we approached the gate, a shadow moved in the darkness, and I froze, my heart pounding.

A figure emerged, stepping into the dim light cast by the stronghold's torches. My breath caught in my throat as I recognized the familiar shape, the sly smile, the glint of malice in her eyes.

"Did you miss me, Tasha?" My blood ran cold as I stared at the woman before me, every muscle in my body tensing in disbelief and horror.

It was Charlotte.
