Chapter 7: The dinner.

Was it all a lie?Words: 5536

A few days later, Marjorie and autumn were sat in the office. Autumn broke the silence. "Marjorie?" She called out.

"Yeah?" Marjorie responded.

"Are you free tonight?" Autumn asked.

Marjorie nodded. "I am.. why?" She questioned.

"Come over to mine, for dinner at 7." Autumn smiled.

"Okay.." Marjorie responded.

"Great," autumn smiled slightly, she then looked down and noticed that Marjorie wasn't wearing her wedding ring. "Where's your wedding ring?" She asked.

"Oh- that.. I-i don't know.." she sighed.

"Marjorie, are you okay?" Autumn asked.

"It just reminded me of everything that happened- it reminded me of Reece." Marjorie spoke- her voice was breaking.

"Are you going to put it back on?" Autumn asked.

"Maybe." Marjorie smiled slightly.

Autumn could sense how much Marjorie was struggling, behind her smile- was a broken heart, behind her laugh- was a soul falling apart.. and behind her eyes- were tears at night. Her heart was broken.

The day passed, autumn and winter were at home, preparing dinner. Autumn had invited reece and Marjorie, without telling either of them. She'd also invited Diana.

7PM.

There was a knock on the door, autumn opened the door and smiled when she saw Reece, and Diana. "Big brother," autumn smiled.

"Hey aut." Reece smiled.

"Hello mum," autumn spoke innocently.

"Hey autumn, you okay?" Diana asked as she pulled autumn in for a quick hug.

"Yeah." Autumn nodded. "Dinners almost ready."

Everyone sat at the table, Diana noticed that Reece was unusually quiet.

"Reece, darling?" Diana called out. "Are you okay?"

Reece shook his head. "Don't worry about me." He smiled.

Autumn kept checking the time- it was nearing 7:15, she started to wonder if Marjorie would actually turn up. At that exact moment, there was a knock on the door.

"Shall I get it?" Reece asked.

Autumn shook her head. "Stay here,"

Autumn stood up and opened the door, Marjorie was stood there, with a slight smile on her face, she'd curled her hair, and actually made an effort for once- she did her makeup. She was also wearing a dress instead of Reece's hoodie for the first time since everything happened.

"Hey." Marjorie smiled.

"You look really nice," autumn responded. "Are you alright?"

"I've never been better." Marjorie smiled. "I've been a total bitch over the past few weeks- I'm sorry."

"Don't apologise, you had a reason." Autumn said.

"I know." Marjorie nodded. "I'll take that hug now." She said with open arms.

The two stood there hugging for a moment until autumn pulled away. "Did you put your wedding ring back on?"

"Yeah," Marjorie smiled.

"Alright- come on in, everybody is in the dining room." Autumn replied.

"Everybody!? Who else is here?" Marjorie asked.

"See for yourself." Autumn smirked.

Marjorie walked into the dining room and immediately noticed Reece, winter and Diana sat at the table.

Reece saw Marjorie, his heart dropped. His deadpan expression turned into a warm smile, and he admired her for a moment; she looked beautiful.

Marjorie didn't expect to see Reece, instead of arguing with him, or causing any issues, she just ignored him- and pretended that he wasn't there.

"Hey Marjorie," Diana smiled. "You okay?"

Marjorie nodded. "I'm alright, how are you?"

"Good," Diana responded.

At that moment, autumn walked into the room, she handed everyone a plate of lasagna along with a glass of wine.

Everyone ate in silence, it was awkward.. but Marjorie didn't touch her food.

"Marjorie, you know if you don't like my lasagna.. you can just tell me?" Autumn laughed.

"It's not that- I'm sure it's perfect." Marjorie smiled. "I'm not hungry right now."

Autumn sighed, she knew exactly what was going on. "I won't force you to eat it, but I'll leave it in the kitchen in case you want it later,"

"Alright," Marjorie smiled.

Diana checked the time and gasped. "Goodness- I'm gonna have to go,"

"Oh, okay." Autumn replied. "You still up for lunch tomorrow, 12:30?" Autumn asked.

"Of course," Diana smiled as she grabbed her bag. "See you at work, tomorrow."

"Bye mum," autumn responded.

"Bye!" Diana waved as she left the room.

Autumn and winter stood up and gathered the empty plates which they carried to the kitchen and began to load the dishwasher, leaving Marjorie and Reece in the dining room, alone.

"Marjorie, are you hungry? I can make you a carbonara, if you'd like?" He offered.

She didn't respond- she just shook her head.

"I'm worried about you." Reece spoke.

"You know- I'd give anything for things to go back to the way they were between us." Marjorie replied.

"I know.." Reece sighed. "Things can go back to the way they were.."

Marjorie shook her head. "No they can't, not right now. My heart breaks every time I see you, or even hear your name."

"At least our paths crossed." Reece replied as he stood up and stormed out of the room.

"Reece!!" Marjorie yelled. A tear rolled down her cheek. "Wait.."

He didn't wait, he just kept on walking.

Marjorie rushed into the kitchen, where autumn and winter were stood. "Have you got any wine?"

"Marjorie- you can't rely on wine, alcohol isn't going to save you." Autumn reasoned.

"Nothing is going to save me." Marjorie responded, she burst into tears and fell into autumns arms.

"Shh." Autumn tried to comfort Marjorie.

"Everything I was afraid of happening, happened." Marjorie sobbed. "I just want my Reece back."

"I know," autumn whispered. "Things will get better. This isn't forever."

Or was it?

To be continued.
