Later that night, Marjorie was sat in her living room, sipping a glass of wine, and staring into space, until she heard the doorbell ring. She stood up and opened the door, only to find Reece stood there, in an awful state.
"Reece I-" Marjorie began.
He cut her off. "Do you want a divorce?" He asked.
"No." Marjorie shook her head. "Of course not, what makes you think that!? Don't be silly."
"Well, considering the way I've treated you.. I wouldn't be surprised if you did." Reece replied.
"Reece- I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you.. but I'm just not ready right now." She spoke with her arms crossed.
"Marjorie, everything I do- is for you." Reece said as a tear rolled down his cheek. "I'll wait as long as you want."
Marjorie laughed. "You don't have to wait for me- considering what you did to mia.. I wouldn't be surprised if you've been seeing someone else."
"Why would you say that? What the fuck?" Reece scoffed. "You're giving up on us too easily, we could make this work- yet you're choosing not to. I thought you loved me more than this."
"I do." Marjorie responded. "Not only have I lost you, but I've also lost myself- so until I find myself again, I'm afraid you can't have me."
"Fine." Reece sighed, he turned on his heel. Marjorie watched him walk down the driveway, then she had a second thought- she ran after him.
"Reece- wait." Marjorie spoke.
He turned around and looked down at her. "Yeah?"
"I'm sorry- I know I don't text or call you anymore, but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking about you." She said, fighting tears.
"I know. I think about you too- in fact, all I do is think about you." He spoke.
"Do you still love me?" She asked.
"I don't know." He shrugged.
Marjorie rolled her eyes. "These mixed signals aren't going to work. Meet me at the new bar in town, tomorrow 9pm, and if you don't turn up.. then I've got my answer."
Reece nodded. "Okay." He spoke bluntly as he unlocked his car.
Marjorie made her way back inside, she rushed upstairs and sobbed uncontrollably. She wondered if Reece would actually turn up.. would they ever speak again?
The next day, Marjorie arrived home from work early, to make sure she had enough time to get ready, she slipped her heels off and rushed upstairs. She had a shower, she washed her hair, and straightened it, she then got dressed- she wore a long, tight fitted black dress with a slit up the left leg. Once she was dressed she reapplied her makeup- applying a little more than usual.
On her way out, she grabbed her handbag and made her way out to her car, she was so anxious- it even started to make her feel a little sick.
She parked her car a little further up the street, and then walked into the bar, she sat on a stool, and then a barista with long- red hair walked over.
"Hey, could I get you anything to drink?" The girl asked.
Marjorie nodded. "Yeah, I'll have a martini, please."
"Oo- good choice. Special occasion? Waiting for anyone?" The girl asked.
Marjorie nodded. "Yeah- my husband, we're going through quite a lot right now.. so if he doesn't turn up tonight, then i suppose I've got my answer."
"He'd be stupid not to turn up, you're absolutely gorgeous." The barista winked. She then handed Marjorie her drink. "There you go."
Marjorie smiled. "Thank you."
Marjorie sat, scrolling on her phone while sipping her drink, 9pm was approaching rather rapidly. Her hands were shaking.
8:59 PM, she read.. but Reece was nowhere to be seen.
She thought maybe he was a little late, so she waited a few minutes, until she checked the time again. "It's 9:05, he isn't here." Marjorie huffed as she placed her empty glass onto the bar top.
"I'm sorry, I really hoped tonight would work out for you." The barista sighed.
"So did I." Marjorie rolled her eyes as she took her wedding ring off and left it on the bar top, beside the empty glass. She stood up and grabbed her bag, then she stormed out of the bar and burst into tears as she walked up the street.
It was over.
A few moments later, Reece rushed into the bar and scanned the room, he couldn't see Marjorie. He started to panic, so he walked over to the bar and spoke to the barista. "Hey- have you seen a blonde woman, freckles, glasses, bright blue eyes.. anywhere?"
"Ohh, so it was you that she was waiting for." The barista replied. "I'm afraid you've just missed her."
Reece looked down and noticed Marjorie's wedding ring beside the empty martini glass. "No.."
"You'd better go and find her. Quick!!" The barista smiled.
Reece was fighting tears, he grabbed the ring and shoved it into his back pocket. "Which way did she go?" Reece asked.
"Left, I believe." The girl responded.
"Thank you so much." Reece thanked her as he rushed out of the bar and turned left, he ran up the street searching for signs of Marjorie, it was raining heavily, it was cold, meaning, he could barely see.
Until he spotted her in the distance, he ran as fast as he could to try and catch up with her. "Marjorie!!" He yelled.
Marjorie froze, she didn't turn around, she just stood still.
As he approached her. "Thank god- it's you." Reece let out a sigh of relief as he held a bunch of soaking wet, red roses in his hand.
Marjorie smiled slightly. "You came?"
Reece nodded. "Of course I did, did you really think I wouldn't?"
"Well obviously- that's why I left.. you scared me baby." She said with tears running down her cheeks.
Reece wiped her tears and smiled. "I would never give up on us, true love has a habit of coming back."
"After everything that's happened.. you still want me?" She asked shyly.
"Yes Marjorie," he handed her the roses, and then reached into his back pocket. "You forgot something."
"What's that?" She asked.
"This." He giggled as he held the ring in his hand.
"Oh." Marjorie responded. "You'd best put it back where it belongs," she teased as she held her hand out.
Reece carefully slid the ring back onto her finger and smiled. "That's better."
"Much better." She smiled. She grabbed his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, he immediately relaxed at her touch. "My Reece,"
"My beautiful," he responded as he took one step closer toward her. "I can't say it.."
"Three little words, eight letters." She spoke in a flirtatious tone. "Say it and I'm yours."
"I love you." He responded.
"I love you too." She smiled, he pulled her in for a bruising kiss.
"God- i missed you." Reece said as he pulled away.
Marjorie grabbed his hand and looked up at him. "Home?" She asked.
Reece nodded. "Home." He smiled warmly.
But sometimes.. home is a person.
To be continued.
